I rode the Jungle Cruise for the first time in many years Friday night, just before the park closed. Our skipper was a lady and did a really good job. When we reached the hippo area, the skipper on the previous boat must have shot them all, because they never arose from the water. Our skipper had her pistol out, ready to shoot something. She told us to watch as she took care of the animals, then waved the pistol at them, yelling "shoo, shoo!" Very realistic! LoL

The tribal natives were also not moving. They just stared at us. Creepy!

I always felt that being a Skipper on the Jungle Cruise had to be the absolute worst job at MK. It's amazing they can keep up the enthusiam saying the same cheesy jokes over, and over, and over.
Skippers consider themselves the rock stars amongst the CM's. Many don't even deem lesser CM's worthy of their time. Unless they are hot girls. Or hot guys.

On one of our trips this year we had an older guy as our captain. I couldn't work out whether or not he was playing a character and putting on a persona of a dour old person, or whether he was naturally like that? There was no real enthusiasm in his spiel and he made very little eye contact unlike the other captains we had. I was almost expecting him to take out his mobile phone at one point during his spiel and start texting somebody (he didn't)

Maybe it went over my head, or maybe he was just having a bad day. It could even have been that under normal circumstances he would have looked good but the standard of the others had been so high that it made him look bad? Anyhow as others have said, it must be hard keeping up the enthusiasm doing the same thing time and time again.

Our skipper last week sure didn't stick to the script and was downright offensive towards the end of the cruise. I've never been a fan of the jungle cruise for this reason right here. He did receive quite a few dirty looks and by the end of the ride everyone was ready to get it. It was also mid afternoon so we still had quite a few kids on board. I don't know if he was having a bad day or what, but there really is no cause for that type of behavior.

Good story, but it told me nothing...offensive in what way? Everyone was ready to get it...what does that mean? Was he angry? Insulting to the guests? Telling dirty jokes? What was happening?

The jokes were dirty for a Disney theme park and he did a few jokes that poked insults toward the guests in the boat.

Like what, if you don't mind me asking? We had a skipper once that sort of made pop culture references, like about Britney Spears or Lady Gaga, but I don't remember it being anything offensive or dirty.

When we were there in July, the skipper we had (Courtney) was off-the-charts AWESOME! She went through the whole usual spiel, pretty much, but also added in a BUNCH of what, I can only assume, was her own stuff, 'cause I've never heard it before, along the way. The whole boat was laughin' our collective beeeeehinds off!
We made sure to track down her manager to tell her how great she was. :)

That's a pretty rude generalization. Plenty of 'em don't really like the JC, and certainly don't think themselves superior to others. The only ones who view them as "rock stars" are the ones who wanted to work there but didn't get to.
Anywhom...
They stopped shooting the hippos around '96, when DAK opened. Also, they generally stick to the boring script till about 5 when the managers go home and stop hiding in the jungle. Literally hiding in the jungle.

Recently returned from WDW and me and my parents, who tagged along on my trip, went on the Jungle Cruise twice - once during the day and the other at night. Two different skippers, two different attitudes, maybe because it was day vs. night.

The night cruise director had the same spiel but ad-libbed a little bit. For instance the "backside of water," she also said you can see this at home, it's called O 2 H. Also the funniest thing was when we were docking for the night. There were two other skippers on the dock and one of them had a noose around her neck, well over her face. She immediately put it down and said they are going to teach the boat some new tricks. Follow me here -- boat is backing up and the noose is around the anchor tightening the rope. The skipper says ... "and we are learning, and we are learning, and we are learning ... and now it's taught. Good boat, good boat." Taught as in tight.

Another time a skipper said she wanted to point out some of her favorite plants. Sure she pointed to this and that and oh, that over there. Those are cool. But she also added, look up there, see that? That is hibiscus. Then she points lower to the waterline or so. She says, see that those are low-biscus. And that over there, pointing to the water, that is sea-biscus (as in the famed thoroughbread Seabisciut).

I remember skippers used to call the "head salesman" Chief Name' (nah-mey), because that's his name. Now they call him Trader Sam, a call out to the Disneyland Hotel bar of the same name.

There are other "winks, winks" when skippers go off script to kick the tour up a few notches, and it's all fine with me.

Always and enjoyable ride. Can't wait for my next trip to hear something else and laugh all the way down the Nile for niles and niles and niles.

Kungaloosh!

Most of the skippers that I've experienced were quite good. Among the few exceptions was the sweet old lady who seemed to enjoy her job to the fullest but it was more like she was telling her grandchildren a bedtime story than anything else.
She stuck to the script and was as sweet as can be. Not funny at all, just sweet.

Another one was a young woman who ad libbed most of the ride and most of time she gave me the impression that she was a bit "slow". She would shout, (in a most annoying tone) "Hey guys!!! Look ovah dere! Itsa tigah!" Hey guys!!! Look ovah dere! Itsa elefunt!".

That hippo must be full of holes.

Yeah... You'd think those suckers would sink to the bottom by now, but I guess all that fat keeps them afloat.:D Or maybe theyve got life preservers on that we cant see.

In all the JC trips we've taken, and theres been many, we have had 99% great skippers. Yes theres been that odd one thats flat, dry, "just doing my job" kind of guy who makes the trip a bust. But the good ones make up for the extremely rare bad one. They really add to our Disney day. I hope Disney doesnt interfere with their ability to have fun ad libbing their cruises.

I'm wondering that as well. It's hard to tell jokes to a wide wide range of people and have all of them think you are funny. Big difference in some guy from Harlem NY, Dalton GA, Manchester GB, Toronto CD etc. What's funny to the city people can be down right an insult to the Hill People.

You are so right. I married a girl from Canada. It was years before she started to understand phrases and one liners that are used all the time in the States. And she had lived only 40 miles from the border. Different worlds...different understandings.:)

We have had a few great skippers in the past....both DDs were appointed honorary skipper and allow to steer the boat....they really thought they were in control! The script we have heard doesn't vary much from year to year.
