Jim Hill- latest about HP and Disney's possible response

I think the AL retheming is an awesome idea, mainly because I feel as though AL is by far the most out-dated looking land in MK. Changes are long overdue in AL. Even though many of you are far from in love with the "Pirate Land" Idea, I think it has alot of potential. PoTC has become such a popular movie franchise and there is much money to be made by capitalizing on its success.

Have you seen the size of the crowds that gather around "Cap'n Jack" when he appears outside of the PoTC que?? Have you noticed how much longer the PoTC lines have gotten ever since Disney added a few Jack Sparrow AA's? If they would put a Black Pearl replica where the Swiss Family tree is, and add a new PoTC themed E-Ticket Ride somewhere in AL, such changes could make AL the focal point of MK for the first time since the 1970's. And, if AL ever got to that point, containing so many PoTC themed attractions, they might as well just re-theme the rest of it and turn it in to some kind of Pirate Land.

All in all, it's hard to put my feelings into words, but I feel like if done right, a Pirate themed land could be quite awesome, even if it comes at the expense of Adventureland. I'd suggest leaving JC alone though, or maybe adding some minor retheming. Such a classic should not be removed. The rest of AL is expendable, though, aside from the Dole Whips which should not be tampered with! Get rid of the treehouse, the tiki room, and the flying carpets. I agree with the earlier poster about the fact that the tiki room is irrelevent at this point since MK no longer possesses the original version anyway. DL has the original, so let them keep it. The shops and restaurants can easily be re-themed into pirate shops and restaurants. One of the restaurants has a pirate theme already.

If MK decides to revamp AL, add a new E-ticket (in AL or Pirateland), and refurb space mountain, such changes would rival or maybe even surpass the addition of Harry Potter in IOA.

I guess I'm the only one who is quickly getting sick of pirates...at least the movie ones. I want the old Pirates of the Caribbean back, I don't want to see any more attractions rethemed to fit the movie, and while I'm no fan of Under New Management, I'd rather see the original brought back than to have yet more pirates. About the only thing I'd love to see happen is to have WDW's Pirates of the Caribbean go down for a long rehab...one which would involve making it like Disneyland's far superior version, and perhaps including the dueling pirates from Disneyland Paris' version.
As for Harry Potter, I'm sorry, I think Disney really blew it on this one. There's a still super-hot property that hasn't yet been beaten into the ground.

edit: Just to comment on the previous post: I was at Disney World in December. I visited Pirates on two separate days, and both times there was a less than 1 minute line (the line to meet Captain Hook and Smee was longer). Maybe things have changed since then, but even at Disneyland now that the flood of annual passholders have come and gone for the "They've changed POTC" ado, the lines look pretty much like they did before. I'm sure after 6 months of craziness for the "new and improved" Tom Sawyer Island it will die back down to usual levels, too.

Blugh, I was way let down by Dead Man's Chest (to the point where I don't know if/when I'm going to bother with At World's End)... the first Pirate's movie is good, the original ride is classic, but good lord, don't trample on everything else in Adventureland... capitalize on Star Wars to fight this Potter deal!

I also have a question about the Harry Potter situation in IOA. With all that I've read about this HP stuff, it seems like I've heard 2 conflicting reports. The first report I read had A Harry Potter Island being added, using additional space in the park that is currently being used as an employee parking lot or something. This report said that only a small portion of the Lost Continent would be annexed by Potter Island, with the rest of it being left alone. The left alone portion would continue to be called The Lost Continent.

The second report is the one that is detailed in this thread, and has the Entire Lost Continent being re-themed and turned into the HP Island. The new HP E-ticket ride will be built on land that is part of the Lost Continent, and not on a current employee parking lot.

What I'm asking is: Once these changes are made, will there be any Lost Continent left? Or will it all be Harry Potter Island? Some reports say that there will still be a LC, others say it will all be HP by the time the project is finished.

I'd say it would make sense if they just did away with the LC, since it's the only "Island" in that park that has nothing to do with movies or comics. The whole concept seemed pretty out of place if you ask me.

I've never ridden the DL PoTC, but I know it's almost twice as long as MK's version. How plausible would it be to extend the MK version to look more like DL's? Seems like it would be impossible to clear the space for such a change without ALOT of construction money being spent. I believe DL's has 3 levels, MK's has 2. I don't think they could build a 3rd sub level due to the limestone below, or Florida's water table. The only alternative would be to build a new first level above the current first level.

Other than it's length, what else is different about the DL version? I know that it contains extra scenes, mostly towards the beginning, but are the duplicate scenes also superior in some way? I've seen a couple ride videos of the DL version on Youtube but they weren't high quality enough to guage all of the subtleties.

I wish the imagineers had just built a full replica at MK in the first place, rather than opting for the abbreviated version.

Here are my reasons for liking Disneyland's better:
1. The firefly-filled bayou setting you travel through at the beginning. It's deceptively peaceful, and it gets you in the mood for what you're about to experience. I'm also a big fan of the audio-animatronic man sitting on his porch listening to "Oh Susannah." He reminds me of my grandfather, who spent most of his time doing much the same thing...
2. The Blue Bayou Restaurant - It's on the right side as you float through the bayou, and it, too, fits in perfectly. And the food is pretty great, too (Monte Christo Sandwiches are heavenly, as are the virgin Mint Juleps).
3. The Skull and Crossbones - Disneyland still has it, fortunately. And it's the original voice of X. Atencio, the master pirate who wrote "Yo Ho." I'm not sure who did the voice for Disney World's, but I never much cared for it. I also prefer its location over the drop instead of to the left side. To me, it feels like its a part of the story when it's directly in front of you.
4. Two drops - Not that I care much about cheap thrills in attractions, but in this case, it kind of helps. The first drop tells you you're leaving the present, and deposits you in a spooky, dark cave. The second drop puts you even deeper, but now you can see around you, and while you're still in a cave, now you begin to see the fates of the pirates around you.
5. More "skeleton rooms" - The fate of a number of the greedy pirates is shown, from the ones on the beach who killed each other, to the skeleton who is eternally trying to sail the ship to shore in a storm, to the two pirates who will forever be swilling drinks in the bar, to the pirate captain who died in his opulent quarters, to the skeleton sitting atop the cursed treasure. It's more lavish and more detailed than WDW's in so many more ways.
6. The conclusion - At Disneyland, once you've seen the pirates in jail, the next scene is a room that is still burning, with beams, tables, and other items appearing to be ready to fall down upon you from above. This leads to a finale of pirates shooting it out in another burning room filled with explosives. I prefer this ending to Disney World's as the two pirates in its finale are just shooting off into space. It felt completely random to me, though the vault with gold was a nice touch.
7. The exit - At Disney World, the final scene is IMMEDIATELY followed by the get out room. Then you have to take an escalator to ground level. I dislike this for two reasons: 1) it's too abrupt and rushed an ending and 2) the escalator pretty much throws you back into the modern world. At Disneyland, immediately following the shootout, you head back "up the waterfall" and slowly are reacclimated to the real world once you reach the top.
Now, I realize the drops and climbs were originally done to avoid the railroad, but they made it all work so well that riding Disney World's version has always felt like a Reader's Digest Condensed version of the attraction. I will give it one plus, though - the queue through the fort is quite nice. Disneyland's queue isn't nearly as interesting.
As for how to make it more like Disneyland's, you're right, they would most likely have to raise the entire attraction one floor, which I know would never happen. Actually, they could get away with just the one drop, but extend the beginning and the skeleton rooms, change the ending, and add in the final climb back to the ground level. Again, it will most likely never happen, but I can dream.
Sorry to go on so long, but I wanted to give you a semi-complete answer to your question.

Adventureland is just fine the way it is. Maybe a sprucing up of the JC and a new non-pirate related ride, and it will see traffic. I like the Pirates films but what Disney are doing at the moment is just overkill. Maybe a temporary re-theming like what is going on at HKDL, but Adventureland should stay in the long run.

A Pirates retheming of Adventureland would be great, if it happens. With the exception of the refurbished POTC, this land has been neglected for so long, it's like a trip back to 1985 every time... with fewer places to eat.

A tavern? In Magic Kingdom? Not that it's a bad idea, but I can't imagine beer and wine sales in Walt's final park. (EPCOT doesn't count - the Card Walker/Ron Miller crew created the park we know today). Maybe it looks like a pirate bar, with Cokes, sweet tea, and juice boxes.

As for WWHP (ha - I made up an acronym :) ... for Universal :lookaroun), JKR may have made some "unreasonable" demands, but that's good for us. It appears that NBC/Uni will have to do more than build some facades, dress out a couple of old coasters, and start counting the $. Much as we love the Mouse, UO does some terrific theming, too (New York Street and the Kong tramway, for example). They just haven't done much of it since the turn of the century. Gotta be better than Fear Factor, though.

It's still just a re-theame. IOA can re-theame all they want but if everyone has already been on Dueling Dragons then it's not going to be anything new, just an overlay.

If Disney were to have had rights to Potter (which I'm glad they don't) they would have built new attractions intstead of a revamp like IOA is doing.

I'll still take WDW anyday over Universal. Theaming and a storyline is everything to me. If I just want to ride a coaster I'll go to Cedar Point.

The HP land is not a retheme. There will be brand new attractions (such as the Weasley Car E-ticket and the exploration of Hogwarts Castle) and new shops and reasturants in the area of empty land between JP and Lost Continent. IN ADDITION...a portion of Lost Continent (Dueling Dragons and Flying Unicorn) will be rethemed to fit into the new land to make the HP area even larger because thats what the franchise deserves.

And this "pirate redo" of Adventureland won't happen for the following reasons: Jungle Cruise and Swiss Family Robinson Treehouse....both are getting major motion pictures from Disney and if they are hits disney will be pushing and promoting them in the parks. Plus Jungle Cruise is going down for a major rehab beginning January 2008 that is unrelated to Pirates.

Harry Potter goes to Universal... who cares? They're not going to have any Potter-themed attractions until a year and a half/two years AFTER the last book and movie are released. Another shining example of Universal striking while the iron is hot. I like Universal (gasp!!), but I see this as a missed opportunity, and one that is not likely to be a long-term success.

So here is the thing about this. Is it an overlay, or a retheme. In some sense, yes it is. But is that any different from what Disney has done? What do you call the Finding Nemo additions to Epcot, yes an overlay or re-theme.

The bottom line is that EVERYONE should be HAPPY about this. Does not matter if you Pro Disney, Pro Universal etc. It's good for BOTH companies. Disney will have to up the anti and that's good, Universal will get more people in the parks and that's good, cause those people will visit Disney.

This battle between who's better needs to end. Fact of the matter is, neither Disney nor Universal is going anywhere anytime soon. So lets just accept it, both parks are here to say and anything they do to bring more people in will benefit all of Orlando.

Universal is paying a fortune for these rights, so the real number they are spending within the park is, I believe, $236m. There will be one major E-ticket in addition to some (admittedly great) retheming. So, yes, this is, by and large, a shiny retheming of Lost Continent. There will be only one major new attraction.
You are just so pitifully wrong.

I have never been a pirate buff nor will I ever be one. I like the Pirates attraction and that's about it. I know they have made 3 movies about it but I still think it will be a flash in the pan. Pretty soon something else will come along and will be the next pirates.

Nice counterpoint, I think your level of detail and items to support your statement is impecable...

Never again will anyone dare to disagree with you... Lest they be stricken with massively intelligent and philosophically superior comments...

Disney is hoping either Jungle Cruise or the Lone Ranger becomes the next "pirates" and if either proves a hit Pirates will go into the background just like Stitch, Darkwing Duck, Oliver & Company, Hillary Duff, and the rescue rangers.

Really, a lot in MK needs updating. I like new and ever changing modernism. I hate nostalgia and going back somewhere to see the same old thing again and again. This may be due to my years living in Tokyo where change is something people embrace, but it may also have something to do with the fact that I never visted MK as a child. Needs new stuff and theming for the new generation. The old people already have their memories.

Change AL. When I went there for the first time, the first thought in my mind is "People pay that much to see this?"

how could u even compare pirates to hillary duff, that's an insult....maybe ure not a big pirates fan but u can't be serious!!?

i'm on both sides wen it comes to the retheming of adventureland....i like the idea about the retheming of the pirates but at the same time i'm a big pirates fan....not all people like the pirates movies, and would therefore disagree.
I do agree wit the fact that the treehouse has to go or to be rethemed into something else(if there is to be a future pirate land i would suggest shipwreck island...where people could learn more about the world of the pirates and the secret code book) the jungle cruise should stay, cuz in my opinion the upcoming movie will give it more attention, i have a different opinion about the swiss family robinson tree house movie:lookaroun . The tike room, i wouldn't mind if it stayed, but if an idea comes up for a better ride to replace it, than i would have to say it needs to go. The aladin carpet is a cute ride, but they could of done such a better job on it.....i mean why aladin's voice:veryconfu , why not the genie's, everybody loves the genie,in my opinion they should of made it the genie's carpet ride, and played his song during the ride.....would of made it a little more popular in my opinion. well that's my opinion on the rides....the Dole whip is staying...end of story.:)
all in all, all the rides i'm okay with changing for the pirates them except the jungle cruise, in my opinion that ride still has more of a chance....
