January refurbishments....any ideas?

We are planning on going to WDW January 20th - 27th.

Are there any rides that are typically down for refurbishment around this time? (I know that at Disneyland, certain rides always go down around the same time each year but I'm not sure if it's like that at WDW.)

Have there been any talks about any rides going down for extensive refurbishment next January?

Thanks!

I am going the week before you. Anything with water is almost always closed around that time of year due to the temperature. I believe Splash Mountain will be and River Rapids as well. Florida is only in the 60s during January and can get down to the 40s at night. The water park hours are weird during that time as well.

Thanks for the info. I'm okay with that. I don't care for those rides unless it's super hot out anyway.

I think the only rides I'm be sad about being closed would be - Expedition Everest, TTA, Test Track, and Spaceship Earth.

Splash Mountain was closed early January last year for it's annual cleaning. I'd expect the same.

There hasn't been any official word yet, but the work on the FL expansion at MK may begin in January, after the end of the holiday season. Which means TT would be closed off, perhaps some other rides as well.

In 2006 splash mountain was open in january, since then they close for about 6 weeks to clean, fix and paint. Maybe they won't need to this year.

Test track did close in 2006 but has not had a major reburb in january since then.

Other rides have been closed in January but they had major refurbs: spaceship earth, the boat ride in mexico, 20,000 leagues under the sea:p

At least one water park will be closed.

Cali river rapids is usually closed, not refurbed.

Shorter hours, not as many venders or food carts.

I think the only major attraction which goes down annually is Splash Mountain for a cleaning. Kali River Rapids is usually open. I definatly rode it early January 2007.

Either Blizard Beach or Typhoon Lagoon will be closed too. I forget which one exactly but they close for a couple of months each every winter.

i go during this time every year and have been for 8+ years (i think) and yes splash mountain was open last year but is often closed during this period. Last year typhoon lagoon was closed for an extended refurb of the main wave pool so blizzard beach was open. BB usually is never open during january so was excited to get to enjoy it as i will never be in disney during the summer months and thus probably will never get to see it again. otherwise i have always had typhoon lagoon open during late january/early feb (and its the better water park imo). other trips have seen the riverboat down for rehab. also (and dont panic) haunted mansion was down but only for a couple of days so i still got to ride it during a week long trip. the hall of presidents was down in this past january due to an event, of some magnitude apparently, that happened in the US.

i really enjoy this time of year and rarely is it cold. last january we averaged near 80 the whole trip with low humidity and cool evenings = heaven (just hope i didnt jinx my next trip!! i love you weather god!)

EWW...I hope it's not 80 degrees when we're there. We were there in January 2008 and it was mostly 60's and lower 70's. Thank GOD. I can't stand anything above 73ish. Hot weather is the worst. I'd rather 25 degrees than 85 degrees just about any day....haha.

We were there in January 2009 and Splash was closed and the year before we were there in February and Splash was closed then. (Just my luck, I guess). We find the winter temps comfortable, bit chilly at night tho.

I experienced the exact same thing. I prefer it to be a little chilly, though. It's a lot more pleasant to have a crisp, cool breeze than to be swealtering!

Um, wm49rs wasn't talking about Test Track. He/She was referencing Toon Town because phase I of the Fantasy Land expansion is mapped in a large portion of the current Toon Town. Easy to confuse, I know, considering TT could be either one. Sometimes those acronyms can really throw ya.

For the OP, we've done January/February several times. I also grew up in Central Florida. Weather can be all over the place: cold, warm, etc. Sometimes it's chilly at night and quite warm during the day. No matter what the 10 day forecasts show, be prepared for anything. Weather changes dramatically there. We've had near freezing weather and we've worn shorts & tshirts. Also, while you're there keep an eye on the weather forecasts. We generally watch for it every night while getting ready for bed. What they say will be the weather over the next 3 days can be completely different by the next day's forecast.

As for refurbs, watch the refurb schedules on Disney's website for the best info. As others have said, at least 1 of the water parks will be closed. I've seen all kinds of attractions closed for refurbs. Some were short. Some were long-term. I don't think I've ever noticed a pattern such as Kali River Rapids or Splash Mountain being closed. I know for a fact my kids rode Kali last January and I'm thinking we all rode Splash Mountain together but I could be mixing that up with my trip in May. I don't particularly care for either one of those rides so neither are a loss for me (I hate stinky-feet smellin' water). When the January schedule is released you'll start getting a better idea. Keep an eye on the operational updates and you'll know what's going to be closed.

I have been in January twice and it was in the mid-70s the during the day. It was perfect jeans and t-shirt weather - my favorite. I am with you though, I much prefer cooler weather. Plus, I never mind the crowds or waiting in line when my clothes aren't sticking to me.

Whered that page go? I used to look at it CONSTANTLY before our January trip to see what days Splash Mountain would be closed and now I can't find it. We were lucky Jan '09 that Splash Mountain opened a day early and we got to go on it for the first time in 3 years =]

But back to temperatures in January, in '09 it was pretty warm during the day but freezing at night, so you either had to travel back to your car, get a locker, or carry a backpack with your hoodies and possibly even a different pair of shoes if you like to wear flip flops (which was why problem ugh) but January '08 it was actually really hot when my family was there, therefore we now over pack and bring all of our winter clothes and summer clothes but hey thats why they give you drawers in your room! HAHA. But yeah Florida weather is screwy.

They don't make the operational updates as easy to find as they used to. I know! If you go here: http://disneyworld.disney.go.com/calendars/?asmbly_startDate=20090929&asmbly_endDate=20091009 at the bottom of the days/hours list for each park you'll see an extra line that gives the attractions that are supposed to be closed.

This past January we arrived the day after a big freeze. The temps were still quite chilly when we got off the plane. On the way in on the ME we saw some flower beds by the big signs outside the Grand Floridian still covered with sheets of plastic to prevent the frost from killing everything. Within a day or so we were in shorts & tshirts. LOL! We always have a backpack or 2 to carry sweatshirts & incidentals. We also frequently get a locker so we aren't hauling the stuff around all day. It's the lesser of the evils sometimes. LOL!

We got a locker every day during our January 2008 trip. We wore jeans and t-shirts every day but put jackets/sweatshirts in the locker for the evening. It worked out well. And lockers aren't that expensive (at least they weren't at the time, maybe they are more now?)
