Is the franchise getting bigger then the magic?

I agree and I would report the negatives if they were to a level that I felt needed to be reported. But turing someone in for talking about her cell phone at work (not talking ON her cell phone, mind you - talking ABOUT her cell phone) in a situation where it isn't inconveniencing the guests seems a little extreme.

maybe if it were a movie theater or Applebees, but we're talking about Disney World. The whole illusion is that they're cast members on stage. Therefore they should be acting accordingly.

Let me quote the OP regarding the CM talking about her phone.

Last time I was there I reported two cast members. One was went to the Castle for dinner. Waiting to be called up for dinner and Cinderella (with a little kid sitting there) was talking to a guard about her new phone, how her old cell plan was a rip-off, her car, what they were doing after work...

Emphasis mine.

If this incident is accurate, Cinderella was not “in-character” if she was at her Castle "on-stage" for the dining experience, and was talking about her cell phone and plans after work. Compare this with the following encounter: While on our honeymoon in ’07 and backstage during the KTTK tour – in-costume Cinderella was conversing on her cell phone and drinking a bottle of Coke. She spotted our tour group and immediately put the Coke away, got off her phone, and got “in-character.” Backstage. While a tour group went through the area.

To me, the magic is better than ever. The past few years, I've had some problems, but in those problems I've been very VERY welly compensated. Being nice when you complain goes a long way. I've almost felt a little bad for the compensation I've received before. So, for me. No.
As far as the clean parks... they've looked identical to me since forever. That's nit-picking at it's finest.

I've been making annual trips to WDW since I was 6 months old.. I'm 29 now. I can say that the magic has gone downhill dramatically in the last decade. Is WDW still an amazing place? Yes. Will I continue to visit? Of course. But there was a time when you would never see over-flowing trashcans or trash on the ground anywhere.

While boarding the Haunted Mansion last month I got in first and looked over the edge of the Doom Buggy. The floor was covered in trash and water bottles. I counted 11 empty bottles people had just thrown on the ground. I understand the ride is running so you really can't do much about it though...

People can blame Disney management all they want for this but I also think that some of the magic is being spoiled by people just like us, people visiting WDW. It seems like more often these days, people have less respect for things. People clearly have no issue throwing empty water bottles out of their ride vehicle or leaving their entire table covered in trash at Cosmic Rays. I feel like if people respected the parks more we wouldn't see as much of this. Sadly this day in age most (not all) children have zero manners and no respect for anything. Parents don't discipline their kids like when I was younger. If I threw anything on the ground you best believe I would have been told to pick it up and throw it away. If I disrespected any other guests, I'd be saying I'm sorry and probably punished. So yes TDO is partly to blame for the decline in magic, but so are us visitors.

Wow! Gobsmacked ! I understand where your coming from. But I never see trash cans over loaded,I never see empty bottles,I reckon my vacation is all about having a ball, and we do. All i see is families having fun, laughter in the air, bairns meeting characters, and parents joining in.Maybe Iam too busy enjoying myself to notice things others see.:)and I do make sure my DS puts trash in the trash can.

I said to them "I'm not trying to be annoying, but it's almost 3am, I am trying to sleep and I can't because of these kids."

Not to be rude to anyone, but it's simply called respect. My kids are 12 and 11 and they say sir and ma'am, and thank you and excuse me. They also know that when we hit the hotel area it's quiet time. Regardless of what time it is, someone may be sick or just plain tired. If you're loud enough to bother people in their rooms, then you're not showing respect.
I agree. We teach our kids the same thing. Sad to say, not every parent does ( have you ever watched Wife Swap?).:( Disney is known for its high level of noise everywhere, especially restaurants (unless signature). If quiet is what you want, then request a room far away from the pools and main building.
I'm sorry that you've run across rude CMs. If they don't smile back( bus drivers), then I keep on going until they do!:)

How about sitting on someones elses ECV parked while you're eating! We didn't confront it ( on her cell phone of course), but it was kinda rude I think?

Not that it would be acceptable for any CM, but it is especially bad show for one in the "role" of a character. "Mommy, the story/movie didn't say anything about Cinderella having a cell phone plan."

Hmmm I seem to be stalking Derilict..but will once again agree on her points..I posted somewhere else tha tthe quality of CMs that are brought in through the college program could use some tweeking, its a fine line between being rude and being able to ask customers to politely police up themselves or manage their children. The "pride" of being a CM seems lacking all too much, its more of I get to hang out at Disney all Semester type of attitiude with no real appreciation of what a "Disney expierence" means...also it irks me to see people casually throw trash on the ground..teenagers in particular..(I have one btw who would never think about doing that) that being said...I'm finalizing my plans now for a Labor day trip..just the long weekend..my afore mentioned daughter will be in college come august 4th so I will be making a trip without her for the first time in 18 years..going to be a little strange

To me, the most serious problems don't concern maintenance, broken lightbulbs, chipped paint. But creative decisions that lowered the product:

- The Empress Lilly stripped bare, turned into a franchise restaurant. I mean, what paddle boat does not have a paddle!? (And smokestacks. And no huge neon sign. And etc)
- The destruction of Main Street into a Walmart Disney Store. Such as the removal of Main Street West and the removal of the flower market on behalf of extra MS shopping façade of twelve feet. The removal of the MS cinema, Magic Shop, Penny Arcade.
- The vandalisation of Future World.
- Celebs in every attraction in EPCOT: Eric Idle, Nemo, Martin Short, Three Caballeros, Ellen DeGeneres, Bill Nye-the-never-heard-of-guy. It's all so boring and uninspired.
- The reshaping of the MK into an infantile, cartoon-driven kiddie park.
etc etc

You are right. I can't go into specifics but over the past day I've heard something connected with this very topic, planned for the near future, that has infuriated me.
Uh-oh...

Can you give us a rough indication of a direction we need to be thinking in?

Maybe I get caught up in the "magic" but in some 40 trips I've NEVER seen trash in the parks to the level that it is noticable. Sure there can be napkins on the ground, etc., around CS areas or carts but maybe if guests weren't such slobs that wouldn't be a problem. I know that I have commented to my wife at just how clean the parks are. And, I have NEVER encountered a rude or inattentive CM. I hope that those who have had the need to report negative behaviour by CM's are as quick to report behavior above and beyond.

I agree with the op. We have been going to wdw since 2002 every year and the magic is plummeting. Even though Disney standards are still above the norm. I Blame and believe it's because society as a whole that is deteriorating. But in comparison to what it was just 5 or more year ago it is decreasing in service quality etc. yes I am still blinded by the magic and pixie dust but the fact stills remains that their stradegy has gone in the wrong direction.

Well since our first trip in 2004,again I'll state,I've never seen overflowing trash cans,or came across rude CM,s. infact Iam always amazed how clean everything is compared to back home.Maybe Iam comparing WDW to where I come from, here's an example. Stayed overnight in a well known hotel in Dunfermline,Scotland. The server who took our order never smiled, infact her face was tripping her. I ordered a bottle of south African chenin blanc, the wine came over, plopped down a bottle of German neirsteiner,to which I said," excuse me,this is not the wine I ordered " his reply was " It's no ma fault, that's what was in the bin number " That's just one example,so when I get to Disney, it's yes sir,no sir, how's your meal sir, anything I can do for you sir, have a magical day sir.I never get this back home, therefore I enjoy the hulabaloo of Disney.long may it continue.:)

Well yeah...

..that is the UK...
I know, but it shouldn't be.I can just see our American friends coming over on vacation, trash bins overloaded, poor customer service,we've got the lot.Or as the Irishman sat down at his table and asked his server " Excuse me,where's my fork and knife? " and the server replied " Under yer fork n nose "
