Is the economic outlook effecting your trip?

Yes, Yes, Yes!

I realize that Disney needs to charge prices in order to make a profit. However, with the economy the way it is, it takes so much longer to save for a vacation.

Interestingly, my husband works in sales in a music store and they had their best Christmas in a long time. He also made more money in 2007 that all previous years. His pay is partly based on sales.>>>>>

If families did like my family did, we cut back at Christmas. Instead of big gifts we got each other little things. We decided $30- $50 was all anyone could spend on anyone. So that means no one spent more than $200 total for Christmas at our house cause we don't exchange gifts with extended family. CDs or DVDs were what we got instead of our usual cell phones, digital cameras etc.
That is what I was pointing out in the first post I made on the subject that has been attacked on here. You cut back when times get tougher. Never said there was a recession, never said that it was effecting everyone but for some of us the economy is hitting home. I even stated that Disney had a great year. It is a place to forget your problems so we go often.

To the poster from Illinois....as for living in Illinois and making it-wages are higher up there and my family seem to be doing OK, too---well except for the floods destroying their homes and no help from FEMA.
Housing is way cheaper up there too. We have been looking at homes to retire back to a small town in the suburbs in Illinois if we decide we can't afford Florida on our retirement.

My wife and I are debating the topic daily for a trip in Sept. We both want to go but it will depend on raises and such.

Not at all. I NEVER let an "outlook" affect my financial situation or my family.
Even if i DID come into tougher times i would find a way...Either work more or be a bit more frugal but when it comes to our vacations we always get it done. Personally, I think the economy is just fine.

Well its affecting us..

we were going to go to WDW for Christmas and couldn't afford it. and now we are not going in March either.

and no we don't live an hour and a half away, we live 20 hours away. So putting it into perspective, Hey you live an hour away, oh boy, go to WDW. you get the resident discount, plus you probably don't stay the night, all you have for an extra cost is a half tank of gas. Big deal.

its totally different when you spend two nights on the road just getting to and from WDW. that's an extra cost. Plus meals for those nights. and gees our trip is at least 3000 miles and not 70 or 80.. lets factor that. and then of course we need a place to stay once we get there. and then all the food, because we can't just eat breakfast before we jump in the car at home, and have supper when we get home, no we have to pay for all the meals.

its one thing to live right there and say ,well Gees I 'm coming. Big deal.

Live north of Chi-town or NYC and ask those folks. See those are the folks that WDW courts at this time of the year. The more it snows the more ads run on TV and in the paper. Oh by the way, that's a totally true statement. Disney scouts the weather in the Midwest and North East to do just as I mentioned.. Its snowing, RUN THE ADS..

But its more then getting tough. Have you not read where Macy's is laying off 2000 people? and other retailers as well? Just cuz you may be rolling in it today doesn't mean that others are as well. or that you will be TOMORROW.

its time to wake up and smell the coffee. or at least read the newspapers or listen to the business report. there is a lot more going on then a simple downturn here.

and one day the bill for the Iraq war is going to come due as well.

its not free. no matter what you think, you still are going to pay for it.

No we are not coming and its all economical .

The problems in the american economy certainly helped my disney trip! I bought all of my spending money before Xmas at a rate of $2.04/£. I got $2,500 for £1225.

Right now, because of the equally stumbling british economy, the rate has dropped to $1.87/£. It would now cost me £100 more to buy $2,500 :king:

It's a struggle for us to go every year or every other but at the same time if you add up a vacation to other places I still believe you get the most bang for your buck at Disney World. You don't have to stay at the expensive resorts and you don't have to go to the parks everyday. You can stay at the pool, or go to the beach, of just resort hop, there are lots of ways to have fun at Disney World and not spend a fortune. I understand gas is expensive and we drive about 1000 miles there and back but even if gas is up a buck a gallon over the previos year what is that and extra 100-150 bucks more than the previous year. We claim zero on our taxes so we get less take home but to me it forces savings for a great trip to Disney World And I know then the government gets all the interest but it works for me and that is how it has always been and I don't miss the money every week because I have never had it there.

I am so tired of people talking about the middle class is getting hit hard. I am middle class and know plenty of people who are and I just dont see it. Maybe, its just because you have been listening to liberals:hurl: too much lately, George Bush is the devil, the middle class is going extinct, all the rich people are getting all of the tax breaks blah, blah, blah. Anyway, the economy is fine as far as I am concerned. Im sorry that milk went up 20 cents a gallon, get over it.
1000% agreed....
I have to say: all the doom and gloom folks who complain about tough times just dont try hard enough. It gets old.

Yes it is affecting my household. We drive there. We are a family of 7, although my DS's are grown but they want to go with us and they don''t have great jobs. Even if they don't go there are 5 of us. Milk ranges 3.98 to 4.50 and that is Walmarts brand. Gas is 2.82 a gallon. Last year I was saving each paycheck, now it is almost living from paycheck to paycheck. I had my heart set on going to WDW this coming summer. Now I can't. I might be able to look at going for the summer of 2009 if things go well the rest of this yr.

Count me in with you. Last year I made two trips to WDW and one to DL. I just got back from WDW, had planed to go again this winter, but I don't think that will be happening as I'm not able to save at the rate I was six months ago.

We won't be going this year for a lot of different reasons. One of us may be losing their job, and it's just not a good idea right now (as much as we want it, we understand that it's not going to happen). We live 2000 miles away, and the plane tickets themselves are about half the cost. We'd rather save and save for next year.

To all of those who haven't experienced the faltering economy...cheers. But don't be too haughty. You never know what's going to happen.

Life's too damn short and too damn hard to not take a week out of my crazy life and 2k out of my megar earnings to make myself happy. If there is a way, I find it......you simply cannot put a price on those memories...its those memories that keep you going through all the heartache, heartbreak, and woe of your day to day.:)

Even if I didn't work there, It would not effect me at all. Life's too short to be unhappy. Honestly it's one of the places I feel best about the world, so I'm not about to quit.

Yeah I'm pretty sure I'm getting laid off some time this month (I was the last one hired... though they also pay me the least, so they could keep me around) so this will be our last trip for a while. I have a few interviews coming up so hopefully one of those will pan out, but we'd also like to save up to buy a house.

SORRY to hear that! If you were close could offer ya something.
Now I feel bad we are going twice, 7 days with 2 DS in July and then a 4 day in Dec for DW and I (no little 1's) our Christmas gift to each other.

DH and I go to DLR at least once every two years. Though, I've been going to DLR since I was a baby--so visiting the parks often isn't really my thing. DH and I visit WDW every four years. We like to save our money, and I focus on the hard-core vacation planning. When we go to WDW, we really go "all out."

yep you are so right..

this is for the poster who said that the middle class should stop whining and that the economic slowdown is a myth:

General Motors reported a $722 million fourth-quarter loss on Tuesday and offered more buyouts to all 74000 of its unionized employees in another bid to reduce costs.

that's from todays business report.

you remind me of the wives of the Big Wigs playing golf in "Roger and me". that people should just " pull up their bootstraps" while none of these wives ever worked a day in their lives.

maybe you should read the news on the internet or on national tv. Its readily available everywhere.

and then come and discuss the economy.

The economy no, college tuition yes. No trip for us this year. :(

I know how you feel. We are taking our upcoming stimulus rebate check, and our tax returns and paying off all our credit card debt, and having to purchase a new honda odyssey due to us adopting three small children, so it is very doubtful we will be able to take our annual Nov pilgrimage to the world....we will be back in full force next year! As much as we would love to go this year, it is more prudent for us to get out of as much debt as we can, in case we go deep into a recession, or things get a little rougher with the economy!
Sigh..........

GM's got no one to blame but themselves with their fat pension plans promised in the 70's adding thousands to the cost of each car and their less than appealing products.

But that's another discussion.

Oh, please. The economy as a whole IS fine. This kinda poppycock is nausiating. The above post is so ridiculous. To even mention a Michael Moore movie just shows the ignorance of economic issues.
