Is the economic outlook effecting your trip?

Well, you can meet one here. If you are working class you see it. I am management in jewelry. Valentine's Day sales are really bad. Wives and girlfriends will be getting more economical gifts like a pair of earrings instead of a diamond ring etc. At Christmas the husbands came in a couple days before Christmas and charged expensive rings, necklaces, etc; but the week after Christmas the wives came in with the kids to return the items. Most, when asked, was there anything wrong with the item stated their husbands should not have spent the money this year because they couldn't afford it.
With gas so high, groceries costing at least $30 more a week, mortgages going up because of rising taxes, homeowners insurance costing in the $3000 range for 2000 or less sq.ft and no land basically, along with the price of everything going up except your wages, the economy is effecting people.
Businesses are starting to cut back on employees cause sales are down so there isn't as much money for payroll available. It is a circle that will get worse before it gets better.
As for Disney, I saw a report that last year was a record year. 2008 probably will be good, too. A lot of people have been paying on their trips in advance so already almost there, but if things cotinue in the downfall, who knows what will happen in 2009. Hopefully, Disney will be the escape everyone finds to get through the tough times.

Pardon my cynacism but I have been hearing this litany all my life. It seems people are always complaining about this same "woe is me" stuff over and over and over. Even in robust economic times you hear the same complaints. Now if Bush's Tax Cuts expire  then there will be economic trouble worse than anything anyone under 50 has ever seen. And you can take that to the bank, so to speak.

Tis' true! It is very weird indeed how it does affect certain areas while other areas are booming. I work in the Architectural field and the last couple of months Nov, Dec, and Jan were very, very slow while some friends in the Structural field had more work that they could handle. We are just now getting some work in. :sohappy:

Anyway back to topic! We are planning our yearly trip and as always are trying to save for it and hope everything falls into place. Fall 2008 Free Dining Bounceback offer! :sohappy:

I think you need to get out more often. We're definitely feeling the pinch, plus we're on year 5 of 8 college tuition years. We have loans and bills far greater than we had anticipated at this time in our lives, and most people we know are feeling the same way.

Anyone paying college tuition has right to complain because "Big College" is out of control and needs oversight and to be reigned in.

We're switching from 2 trips a year to one trip a year.:(

Not really because of the economic situation, more because of Disneys continuing price hikes and Dsney's quality
of service (or lack of there of)
An all inclusive week long trip for my wife and I used to cost 2 grand if we stayed at a Monorail resort.

That same trip is costing us 5 grand now and if anything, the perks and service are less than years gone by.

While we can still afford 2 trips a year, we are beginning to question if we're getting our moneys worth these days.

Recession, depression, economy boom or bust, call it what you will. I work for a wholesale bakery. In January of 2007, flour was 12.58 a bag. January of 2007, flour was at 28.00 a bag and now in February we are being quoted prices of $48.00 a bag for the spring and summer flour. In the 18 years I've worked for this company I have never seen us raise prices more than once in a year's time. We have now been forced to increase our prices for the third time in the last 12 months. This price increase is directly tied into the rise in flour.

We are going to Disney this year as we didn't make it last year (first time we missed since 1993). This has nothing to do with the economy at all. My niece was diagnosed with cancer last year and we weren't able to go since she was involved in chemo, radiation and finally a stem cell transplant from May through January. She is now done with treatments, her hair and eyebrows have started to grow back and she is finally back at school. Hopefully in September she'll be back on the cheerleading squad. Thanks to all on this forum who have heard her story and sent kind words and prayers. It looks like 2007 is going to be a much better year than 2006.

Im going in Sept, I live in Canada, no worries here yet, record unemployment, record housing starts, and a high dollar makes travelling to the States the most affordable it has been in years!!

In agreement with jt04, I also think the fears of recession are heavily overdone.

If its any indicator that the markets aren't as bad as everyone thinks, Disney domestic park attendance was up 10% over this same period last year. As you are all well aware, a WDW vacation is expensive and more of a luxury item than anything. This would be the first part of the budget a family would cut if times are getting tough. However, as I mentioned before, more people than last year (when markets hit record highs) are making the trip. This hints that people (in general) are not any worse off than last year.

HMMM, I hate to read these anad see arguing. Let's face it, some business have been hit hard and some not at all. Some parts of the country have been hit hard, and others not at all. Reality is stores have raised their prices as rent has gone up considerably. My job is secure and I am always gauranteed a pay increase each year. However, cost to heat my home is ooc, groceries have increased, so has my sons preschool tuition and the list goes on.

What I don't agree with is people saying things negatively to others. Some have it hard and other do not...oh well, deal with it. If you can't afford to go this year, that is your opinions and feelings and no one who is going has a right to judge or make someone else feel put down. Also, there is life outside of Disney. There are other places to see in this beautiful country, as well as the world. My family is going to PA over our Feb and March (Great Wolf Lodge) breaks. Does that make me any less of a Disney fan? NO. We are saving more money and CHOOSE to do that. We are going to CA rather than FL this summer to visit family. We will prob stop for a couple of days to go to DL, but if I don't...I will survive.;)

Personally I shouldn't go this year but I think about being there almost every day of my life so the junkie needs his fix.
Personally I'm hoping that Disney offers some super discounts to get people to come out.

Overblown nonsense in an election year. The Pubs did it eight years ago and now the Dems are doing it. There is no doubt all the 'sky is falling' talk is causing problems but it's just unsupported panic. Most people having problems have brought it on themselves by borrowing and spending beyond their means. Fact is we're spoiled rotten and my brother-in-law is sleeping in a tent in Afghanistan so you can have your student loans and your credit cards. Sorry to rant, but I'm going to WDW twice this year! :D

Not true at all. The lower and middle class are being hit really hard right now. Trust me, I haven't overspent by any means. I haven't bought anything that wasn't completely necessary in months. There are some big problems in the economy right now. Most of my family has been laid off from their jobs, things like that have absolutely nothing to do with overspending and borrowing beyond means. I'm not trying to argue, maybe things are just worse off in the part of the country I'm in right now, I don't know. But it's clear that there is a problem here.

I was just wondering how many of you "DIE HARD" Disney Fans are being effected by the economy? Are you going to down size your trip? Fewer days in the world or value instead of deluxe or moderate resort? OR God forbid "NO TRIP AT ALL THIS YEAR"?"

lol, i added an unplanned trip, leave in 8 days

We're sorta with you there... it's our student loans we're paying back that are kicking our butts

Yup, I am having one last Disney blow out before I have to start paying back my student loans. I need to celebrate!

Im going in Sept, I live in Canada, no worries here yet, record unemployment, record housing starts, and a high dollar makes travelling to the States the most affordable it has been in years!!

Another reason to have my blow out now. If we make it next year, it'll be back to the values and mods.

I am so tired of people talking about the middle class is getting hit hard. I am middle class and know plenty of people who are and I just dont see it. Maybe, its just because you have been listening to liberals:hurl: too much lately, George Bush is the devil, the middle class is going extinct, all the rich people are getting all of the tax breaks blah, blah, blah. Anyway, the economy is fine as far as I am concerned. Im sorry that milk went up 20 cents a gallon, get over it.

And another thing, Billions of dollars will be spent on Valentines gifts. Valentines Day is the biggest scam ever concocted. I am married and my wife will be lucky to get a card much less a diamond anything. I dont want to hear about the horrible economy. Instead of getting a Valentines gift for someone go put gas in your car or buy more groceries or put it in a saving account.:brick:

I think when it comes to trips to Disney, many people lose any and all sense of logic and fiscal responsibility. True "die hards" will find ways to get to Disney whether they can afford it or not to the detriment of their own bank accounts. I would hate to know how much money is spent on trips to Disney by people who truly can't afford it. There are so many awesome vacation destinations around the country that are more affordable and just as enjoyable that making a trip to Disney when you can't afford it just seems ludicrous and irresponsible. There is nothing wrong with saying "No trip at all this year" and people shouldn't be made to feel like outcasts because God forbid, they can't make a trip to Disney every year.
