Is the clock ticking on the Sorcerer Mickey Hat icon at the Studios? YES!

Yeah and Michael Jackson was still alive, there were only 3 Star Wars movies, no Indiana Jones IV and Horizons was still open. Everything sucks now!

On the other hand, the only superhero movies had Batman or Superman, and Supes 3 and 4 were TERRIBLE. Plus, the only live-action Captain America was THIS doofus.

I agree, I feel as if they just decided to place the ToT as the "icon" on the app because it's a ride many people associate DHS with. As for the earful tower, I'm sure half of the guests have no idea it even exists..At least with the ToT it's a main attraction and people will know right off that bat (or so I assume)what park it belongs to. I think it would be kind of a stinky icon for DHS IMO.

My guess is that the Earffel Tower is largely unknown by guests because it's been off in the background and no one, except those really familiar with WDW really even know about it. It got a passing mention on the Backlot Studios Tour and that was it. It's really not prominent from World Drive like it once was due to the trees growing up.

Making the Earffel Tower the icon for guests would likely be confusing because of that. They'd probably look at it and think, "What's with the weird water tower?"

Tower of Terror is more recognizable so it becomes, at least temporarily, the landmark. People generally know the ToT is in DHS so they can look on a map, see that, and say, "Oh, there's DHS!"

I think, given enough time with merchandising, that the Earffel Tower will become the icon again. Right now it's a forgotten icon.

Having the ToT the icon of DHS is a little like having Space Mountain the icon for MK. It feels a little off, though I think I understand their reasoning.

The arguments about "what is the theme park icon" seem to go on endlessly because right now the park has no theme. I think we will have to wait for more construction to see what the new theme becomes, and then the choice of park icon will become more obvious.

The water tower theme made sense when they tried to bill this as a working studio.

But right now the park is themeless.

the earful tower is very easy to spot before the turn for entering disney hollywood studios (from the main avenue).

I think its visible enough. Just not from the front of the park.
Just there last week myself and it is indeed visible from the front of the park before you enter. It may be blocked by buildings as you walk down the street, but, then again when was the last time we saw the Tree of Life after we first enter the park? The only park that I can think of where the Icon can be seen pretty much from every location is Spaceship Earth.

I agree with that original statement about it being in the background for so long, but, if they keep the movie theme, which it appears the are doing then it will remain relevant in that it is still connected with movies and movie making even if it isn't done right there. They were all produced someplace and it's a good bet that the studio's all had water towers.

I'm not sure what you are saying about it not being visible, it stand out very strongly when on World Drive. The only things that the trees are hiding is the lower part of the legs of the tower.

Actually, they say.. "Oh, there's the Tower of Terror". It is the most heavily publicized thing in the park.

That is the same way I feel about it, but, Disney has always interchanged Icons and Attractions on their promotional work. It is more recognizable then the tower at this point.

That's a good point. What is the point of a studio water tower for a non-studio theme park?
I have to, again, disagree. The park is still completely dedicated to the entertainment, but, mostly movie theme. That really has never changed. When they first opened it, as a working studio, it was just a matter of blind luck if you were able to actually see the workings of the studio. They were scarce and usually cordoned off to the point that you could not actually see it. It is almost as much of a studio park now as it was then. It is still themed that way.

I think it's even easier... it's damn near impossible to just 'discovery' it in the park.. you never seek it out.. and its never dominating any views. Contrast that with any of the other major park icons like SSE, Tree of Life, the castle, etc. It's why using something like ToT is an easy choice for some... it's something anyone who has ever been to the park can identify and if asked, would probably know which park it was in. The earful tower has far more meaning, and is better fit to the vision of the park... but is the too short nerd in the back of the room who no one even knows they are there because the front of the room is dominated by loud mouths.

But that was only because it was on the Backlot Tour, and now behind construction walls, but I doubt this will always be the case. When the area you used to have to take a tram on becomes pedestrianised - when any guest can walk through Toy Story land or whatever and go up to the Earful tower to take a picture - it will become just as accessible as the Tower of Terror is now.
