Is Splash Mountain holding up?

I just rode Splash Mountain yesterday and everything was working just fine except for the jumping fountains that go over your head.

This is always the effect that never seems to be on, but that's okay with me. I know a few people on here would be surprised to hear me say that any effect off or broken would be acceptable, but to me, the jumping fountains are. Because if people have never been on the ride before, they wouldn't know there are suppose to be jumping fountains. The only things that bug me are things that are very obviously broken. But good to hear everything looks good.

When you have a complicated over ten year old ride running constantly, all day, every day, it's gonna break from time to time. No amount of refurbs is going to change that.

I don't buy that at all. I've cared for pneumatic show systems that are as old (and in some cases older) than Splash Mountain. The key is detailed preventive maintenance. However, Disney doesn't seem to care to do that. Rather, they'd like to run the ride to death, then take it down for a period of time to perform what could easily be done with regular (as in biweekly, minimum) detailed PM (preventive maintenance, yeah, I know, dirty words at Disney it seems).

Any other "breakdowns" are really design flaws (like boats getting stuck, loading / unloading area issues, etc) and THAT is what should be addressed when the ride is taken down.

I'm just saying, even with biweekly refurbs and quick fixes, something will still break and with nearly everyone on the ride with a cam-corder or a phone camera, or an i-pod camera, absolutely every little break from a broken chicken to an unsych recording and put it online for all the world to see. We didn't have such technology back in the day. So such things weren't as easy to spot all the time. If we had the internet back in the day, I'm sure even then we'd find videos or effects and animatronics not working. I'll grant you maybe not as often but it would still happen

Yes, and the key to solving that is detailed PMs with detailed checklists...not month or two month long refurbs.

Even with PMs, it will be nearly impossible to keep up with all the people constantly recording the ride. Eventually, someone is going to catch something and we'll still be having this conversation. Like, something will break and they'll fix it that night at closing time but until then, there's still a good chance someone will still be able to record it and post it online before anyone gets a change to fix it. Some can upload it instantly straight from their camera. I don't think even Disney at their best can keep up with that.

Ten years ago my dad rode Rockn' Roller Coaster with a CM. This CM rode the ride every thirty minuets with a clip board to make sure all effects were working and no lights were burned out. I highly doubt they still do this today, but they should.

-Edit- Disney could hire me to do this for free on splash mountain. Heck, I already do it as a guest.

Maybe, maybe not. But for sake of argument, let's say the CM does check the ride every 30 minutes, within that 30 minutes, someone can still ride, record, and upload straight from their camera or phone. Also have to take into account that then, the CM has to contact whoever is in charge to stop the ride so what ever is wrong can be fixed and who knows how long that could take.

I don't think "dead chicken on Splash Mountain" is getting all that many hits on youtube...at least one of the chickens was "dead" at WDW for at least 2 years (which I noticed both times, but only because I used to care for shows like this, and a decade of being trained to notice things like this has stuck...)

It doesn't need a lot of hits. It just needs enough for us to notice and start this conversation. Are the videos we're referring to now getting a lot of hits?
That said, I'll give you the two year long dead chicken. That's ridiculous.

I've heard it's better since the last refurb. I hope that is the case, as the one place I really notice that it's lacking is the scene where you are floating through the "other houses"...

Unfortunately, Disneyland's SM is starting to experience issues that plagued WDW's version.

Jesus, bet Disneyland fans aren't happy about that... I hope they're giving Disney some venom for that. Definitely would call that close to WDW pre-refurb levels of bad on the riverboat. Micechat needs an article up about that if they don't have one already, guessing they're working on one as that's their video.

How long has it been like that? Wonder if their new president has anything to do with it... That's disgusting, especially since it's apparently been that way for some time.

WDW's is still looking fairly decent so far from youtube videos and seems like any problems occurring are being dealt with fairly soon after they happen. I'm kind of shocked. Of course I don't know when all these videos have been shot, so if there's any info about consistently broken elements after the refurb fixed things then tell me.

nope, but it's still a great attraction... the things missing / not operating correctly are not noticed by your "average" guest. Disney can't maintain their parks to our standards, as true dedicated fans.

I know I'm a pretty dedicated fan but even I probably wouldn't notice a lot of the issues. I'm... kind of dense and easily get too caught up in the moment to notice. :p I did notice last time I was on It's a Small World though (last June) that a few dolls weren't moving or not moving well. I simply laughed and moved on with my vacation. I actually find such things kind of funny to a point
just remember, it could always be worse
