With Dreamworks pushing the animation so much, and Katz treating it like it's the next huge thing, what do you thing? Is Shrek the next big thing? Or is the humor that it's based on going to fade out after a while?

Loved the first flick and I'm looking forward to the second.

That said Shrek is not going to hit the same iconic status as Mickey.

Shrek is cool but Mickey is the one and only!! Shrek may just be a fad that will wear out soon. I know a lot of people who didn't care for him in the first movie...

There will never be another character like Mickey Mouse with his appeal. Keep in mind Mickey was made in the depression when no one else looked foward to anything.

No, Shrek is a movie star with no history of cartoon shorts. Mickey Mouse is a star of cartoon short features, who made a transition into feature films, thanks to a boost in Fantasia, ironically, a movie of shorts woven into one feature length film.

I love Mickey, but he has not proven his ability to carry a massive film audience beyond 15 minutes, has he? Don't tell me about "A Disney Christmas Carol" - Uncle Scrooge was the star of that film- Mickey was Bob Cratchitt, fer cryin' out loud!

By analogy, Shrek is Harrison Ford - movie star. Mickey Mouse is maybe Ron Howard - television and movie star, director. Harrison Ford and Ron Howard were on screen in a film together - "American Grafitti." I wonder if we will ever see Shrek and Mickey Mouse in a film together.

Mickey's feature film credits include the afore-mentioned "Fantasia," which we all know about, released in 1940.

Also,

"Fun and Fancy Free" 1947. This was a feature length movie consisting of two shorts packaged together with Jiminy Cricket as the narrator: Mickey and the Beanstalk was Mickey's contribution. Bongo the Bear completed the film. Mickey Mouse's best feature film performance, other than Fantasia? He was the star, but it was not a feature length film on its own.

1988: "Who Framed Roger Rabbit" Cameo city

1995: "A Goofy Movie" Once again cast in a supporting role.

There you have it. Isn't he the star of an upcoming release, said to be going direct to video? Not quite the fate of Shrek 2, is it?

Don't get me wrong. Mickey has more than made up elsewhere for his shortcomings on the big screen. Shrek can only stand and admire Mickey's success as a theme park host and star of comic books and comic strips, as well as television (MM Club I & II, House of Mouse, etc. )and the previously mentioned "cartoons."

Shrek may seem like a temporary icon for the Universal parks, but right now he's nothing more than a passing fad. Sure he's popular and the star of two successful movies and his own 3-D show in the park, but it takes a lot more than that to make it into the icon phase.

Anybody can become famous overnight. A successful movie or tv show that spawns sequels and additional seasons will make the famous person into a star. Many more movies and/or shows and the person becomes a superstar. Now do all of the above and stay successful for over thirty to forty years and you can become an icon. Shrek still has a long way to go before he can be anything close to Mickey Mouse. Let's check back on him around 2030 or 2040 before we can start comparing the two of them.

Well, what should be understandable as the next Mickey Mouse? Because Shrek is recognized worldwide and he is drawing crowds everywhere, be it at movies, parks or home video.
We all love Mickey very much, and he sure is unique, but over the years there have been a few "next Mickeys": Bugs, Mario (from Super Mario Bros.), Bart Simpson. The three of them came out ahead of Mickey on a survey done a few years ago, about children recognizing characters. In fact, I do believe Mario was number one. Nowadays, Mickey's situation is better, we have PhilharMagic, MouseWorks, House of Mouse, the Treasure tins, The Three Musketeers... But still, my 3 yeard old niece watches Shrek 5 times a day but can barely go by 2 Mickey shorts without running off to do something else.
Now, all that said, I do think Shrek 3 and 4 need to come out before Dreamworks can adopt the Ogre as their spokesman. It sure seems they'll be as huge as the first two, but he still needs to be established.

I'm already in hell :D

Shrek is the equivalent to say...Buzz or Woody...or Mike or Sulley...not Mickey Mouse. Shrek has been in two movies that have hit big...so did Buzz and Woody...are they Mickey?
