Is Shanghai Disney Making Us Look Bad?

What seems to be happening is that Shanghai is looking to draw people into Disney who have not yet seen it, perhaps ever.

WDW seems to rely on a largely "already installed" customer base that probably has been at least 1 time in their lives.

They also bank on the fact that the huge scale of 4 parks, water parks, and over all "resort" feel makes up for a lack of new tech on attractions. My guess is that people in China will expect much more and replicating current WDW would leave them disappointed. There is no nostalgia factor in China.

Ill take the three mountains and haunted mansion ANYDAY over whats going in at Shanghai. Plus if you combine all 4 of WDWs parks to just Shanghai, WDW wins by a landslide as far as attractions. I do agree with another poster that the little mermaid is a complete joke and Ill add that 7DMT was a bust for me too. I have a feeling that Pandora is going to be mind blowing with tech and effects. Super excited for it.

I have not been to Disney since the Opening of 7DMT so I can speak on that, But after watching the video PANDORA has to be mind blowing for sure.

Grief no.

TRON is sixty seconds from launch to brake zone. And one quarter is unthemed outside. Nice tech, poor execution.

Pirates is stunning. If anything it makes management look bad for not bringing something similar to US parks sooner. Same with Mystic. Same with Rat / Pooh. Even Pan.

The park is nice but the attraction roster is lacking. One E+ doesn't make a park.
At least the outdoor portion looks fantastic at nighttime compared to how it looks during the day.

No, Tokyo is instead. I am pointing to Marini1971's comment for why I think that. There is a reason why they already approved a phase 2.

I think Tokyo Disneyland has been making WDW bad for a while. What Tokyo Disneyland announced last month made the MK's version their Beauty and the Beast Land look bad. Disney Sea is very impressive based on what I seen on Youtube.

Tokyo Disneyland first got trackless attraction years ago, but yet WDW never got one yet. That shows cheap WDW is.

No.

Shanghai Pirates looks great. Tron looks great. Name me another ride that isn't a clone going in at Shanghai. Are they the newest versions? Yes. So of course they'll look better than a 40-something-year old park with management that wouldn't know a maintenance schedule if it bit them... but I digress.

We still have nothing on-ride yet for Roaring Rapids and that could be a total flop. We could get a disco croc. We don't know.

What I am trying to say is, from what I've seen, Shanghai is not equal to the sum of the parts. While Pirates and Tron look great, everything else seems flat. And there is way too much redundancy (two Snow White attractions, two Pooh attractions, two Alice attractions of Phase 2 goes as planned).

So while WDW has issues and needs fixing, I don't think Shanghai beats anything at this moment the way some people were hyping in here for years (it'll be the best EVAR ZOMG! you know who y'all are). The best is still Tokyo, with WDW (imo) still being second best because of everything it has to offer (despite it's price increases and lack of improvements).

It's impossible for a 45 year old attraction to compete with new construction. We redid our kitchen 18 years ago and it pales in comparison to new construction and technology.

To achieve the same thing at WDW, POC would have to shut down for what, maybe 3 years for demolition and rebuilding at WDW's pace? Additionally, I have no experience in International construction, but are labor and material costs equal between Shanghai and Orlando? Are costs related to Government regulations the same?

Neither Mine Train nor Ariel lived up to the pre-opening hype. Mine Train is a nice attraction, but nothing groundbreaking from a technology standpoint and Ariel is just down right cheap looking. I would like to think Avatar and Star Wars in Orlando would be spectacular, but based on the new Fantasyland , I'm not placing any bets.

I am OK with them closing a ride for a couple of years to update it. Especially into something that amazing. Times change and everyone needs to keep up with the technology. I know that is not possible with everything but they can do it with a couple of rides that would really benefit from it. And also the fact that they did such a crappy job on LM is inexcusable. And I am one of WDW's biggest fans. I go every year and usually choose to see only the good. But I think they can do much better if they wanted to.

In terms of incredible rides, yes. I don't necessarily think it is making us look bad. But it does make our park look dated. I love the history behind it though. Wouldn't have it any other way.

But in terms of upkeep of the park, no. There were reports that people were trashing the park before and during the soft openings. I think WDW does a great job in keeping the place clean. Whereas Shanghai might have some trouble with visitors who were littering and basically using the bathroom..not in the bathroom.

The technology that I have seen is amazing, but Shanghai Disney is new and there was not much tradition, sentiment, or nostalgia factor to figure in the equation. It is a totally different target market. That target market not only lacks the Disney history but is also more technologically demanding. Just look at the Pirates video...have you ever seen that many phones recording on one ride?

Exactly. It's not making me feel bad. I think that's where a lot of problems arise. Some feel that WDW belongs to them. It doesn't. It belongs to Disney. And unless you are a stockholder not even an inch of it belongs to you.
Well, as you kind of said, shareholders own Disney, not Disney. But I kind of do feel like it's "us" since Disney is such a big part of my life and my portfolio. I own quite a few shares, but it's more than that to me. I probably have spent literally a year of my life at Disney and it is more than a park for me.

Is that stupid? Maybe, but it's real.

I agree with that, but the recording will die down over time. I think much of this was just because it's brand new.

I'm a stockholder and I don't feel bad at all... Just makes me feel like selling mine.

I don't think it will make us look bad. But, it will make us wonder why Disney decides to showboat better attractions overseas alone and never over here..

And my only other gripe is this.....
Why is The Storyteller's statue at Shanghai? This makes no Sense??

I have the small collectible of this sitting in my living room......Oh how I wish I could take my picture next to THIS at WDW !!!
