Is it crazy to fly to Orlando for a weekend Disney trip?

DH & I are flying down from Detroit early on May 20 and returning in the evening on May 23. This will be the shortest trip he & I have done together, but I did a three night solo trip for the F&W festival a couple of years ago. As long as you either have a very good game plan, or want to just relax and go with the flow I think it can be a great weekend!

I do several weekend trips every year. Go down for the MNSSHP and MVMXP. Leave early on Friday, get in around 9:00AM and return home on the last flight out on Sunday. Get in around 10:30PM. That gives us 3 days to enjoy the world.

You are a sane and well adjusted man. If you have the financial ability, go. You only get so many chances in life to do things such as this. As for me, I must now focus on the end of a rain delay at Fenway.

nothing better than a game ending at 245am and then having a game at 105 pm the next day....go sox...more importantly go bruins

I did a weekend trip in 2009 so I could go to the Food and Wine Festival with a friend...I arrived very late Friday and left Sunday evening. I also have an AP which made tickets a non-issue. While it was a fun day and a half I did tell myself that I wouldn't do it again unless I extended the weekend by a day or two. So when I went for a food and wine weekend this year I went from Sat morning to Tuesday afternoon instead. To me it was just a lot of travel fora very short period of time. However, soon I will be less than 2 hours away so weekends and day trips will be somewhat more expected.

I agree. If you have the time, money, and your child is in safe loving hands - go for it! Grandma gets some one on one spoiling time, and you get a weekend as a couple. You might even bring home a souvenir. :lookaroun

As Mom stated above if that all works out for you then go for it. Sometimes you can't think about things just do it. Enjoy yourself and the quiet.

Go for it, some people may not believe this but I have done four or five long weekend trips from the UK (fly out on a Thursday , return Monday night). From Gatwick.
Just about stayed on UK time.

Tough to sit through a rain delay for a loss. Especially this year, and to the Angels.

Back to the post. Yes you are crazy, but then again so are most of us. I am sure if any of us, (using the collective us), had the time and the money we would definitely do this.
Have fun!!!

I've done a couple of weekend trips and even an overnight once.

Whims can be expensive, but fun. :king:

If you think you'll do it a few times, seriously consider getting APs. Short stay tickets are very expensive for multiple trips.

I agree with you on the AP. That's the best bang for your buck. Plus you can get the discount on the rooms.

I do a lot of weekend trips, but it is a little different for me since I just drive there. I have to say I find that weekend trips are depressing. Just when you start to get into the Disney mood, it's time to go. Then you wish you would have stayed a week. Or two. Or three. :)

I just came back from a long weekend--we wanted to celebrate our 25th anniversary, but hubby just started a new job and hasn't any real vacation time yet. We flew down after work on Friday night, and back on the last flight on Monday, so we had two full days and most of a third. We concentrated on MK and Epcot, because that's all that was there on our honeymoon!

Between our APs and DVC, our only costs were airline tickets and food.

I don't think you're crazy at all. If I lived only a 2-1/2 hr (+/-) flight away I'd go too. (We live in CA, so for us it's a full days travel each way.) Leave Fri a.m. and come back Mon p.m. Sounds good to me!!!!!!

Enjoy. :sohappy:

Congratulations!!!! Yes, do it! Grandma will love the opportunity to with your child. Oh, what fun, spontaneous trips:)

I have done this a couple of times. The first time I booked us within 12 days of arrival. DSIL and I flew out of Rochester non-stop and were there in 2.5 hours and on DME within a half and hour. We had four days and it was wonderful. Left rochester in 7 degree weather and arrived in Orlando and it was 77 degrees!!
At the end of Feb 2009 DS was researching colleges and we did an impromptu trip with less than 2 weeks planning for the college tour and stay at WDW. We were there from Saturday midday until Wednesday afternoon and had a grand time.
Last year a friend called me wanting company on a trip for her to visit a terminal relative. This was a 7:15 am call on a Tuesday and we left NY at noon on Friday and drove down. I dropped her off to her relatives on Sunday am and checked in to WDW mid afternoon. I enjoyed Sunday evening, Monday, and Tuesday on a solo trip and we headed back north on Wednesday. You know sometimes I think that the short trips with little to no planning are as much fun if not more at times. We did invest in AP in the fall of 2009 when we moved DS to Winter Park (NE side of Orlando) for college and they sure came in handy. During the 15 months (there was a promo) that we had them we got room discountson 4 trips due to the APs

So, I have this crazy idea of flying Friday morning out of either Toronto or Buffalo (I live in Canada) to Orlando. Buffalo has cheap flights and I figure we can use the full day Saturday and full day Sunday to go to Magic Kingdom and another park like Islands of Adventure on the Sunday since I have never seen Potter yet. Then we fly out Monday and are home Monday night.

First off, answer this...........am I crazy?
Or have others done this on a whim?
I know it will cost a few bucks but considering how much we love Disney it will be worth every penny and I am content with just staying off-site in a Super 8 hotel for three nights.

So am I nuts?

Since I almost always have upcoming Disney reservations, I tend to not do that. I have done weekend trips to Universal, however. I don't think it's crazy at all.
