Is it crazy to fly to Orlando for a weekend Disney trip?

DH and I spent an anniversary weekend this past October and couldn't have asked for a better time. We spent the bulk of Friday at MK (thanks to MNSSHP tickets) Saturday was techincally our only full day at the parks but we managed to visit all four. :D Sunday was spent at Epcot with a quick visit to MK before heading back to the resort.

So yeah...I say go for it!

We did it in February for the Princess Half and are going to do it again in January for Marathon Weekend...

...so if you are crazy at least you're in good company here on the boards

Lol I've done almost this very trip myself (Buffalo to Orlando, too!) :ROFLOL:

Last year, my mom was about to have major surgery (she ended up almost not making it, and spent several weeks in intensive care).

Her surgery was on Monday, and the Thursday before, I got the idea to try and make it work. AirTran had plane tickets for $129 round trip (at the last minute...that will never happen again!). I took a leap of faith and tried Priceline. Named my own price of $49 and got the Doubletree Suites in DTD. Got a rental car the same way for $10 a day. The whole trip cost like $400 or something ridiculously inexpensive for two people.

It was done. I just had to call our doctor to see if they'd go along and get my mom to go for her pre-surgery signoff on Thursday afternoon instead of Friday. They were wonderful enough to call and ask if she could come in that day instead (squeezing her into a packed schedule).

That night, I sprung it on her, and the next morning we were on a plane to Orlando :)

We didn't arrive until Friday night, so we went to Downtown Disney. Spent Saturday all day in the Magic Kingdom. Then flew home Sunday (you'd get another day - lucky!). My mom used her Disney Reward dollars for one day, single park tickets.

It was magical, and as they were wheeling my mom into surgery, I heard her tell the nurse, "My daughter took me to Disney World this weekend." They probably thought she was nuts

I say go for it! I think back now to that weekend and smile, because the next few months were so difficult (she's fine now, but it was really tough for awhile). If you have the opportunity to get a little magic, take it :)

Also, try naming your own price on Priceline (for hotel and/or rental care - I wouldn't recommend it for flying). I've done this for Orlando 4-5 times, and I've never paid more than $49 for a 3-star hotel. I've also never stayed further than 5 minutes from Disney property. It can be a bargain, and I've never had any issues at all.

Oh, and just cause I'm excited, 105 days until I go back :sohappy:

definitely do it. my fiance and i did it 2 years ago (exactly 2 years from this Sunday actually) after we had just been there for a week in March. My fiance got sent down for a 1 day Friday seminar in Orlando. Since work covered her airfare, and i got corporate discount on mine, i met her at the airport where she returned her company car rental and we hopped on the magical express. we stayed 3 nights and came home late Monday. they even threw that spring discount out there so we upgraded from the all-star to Coronado springs for $60!

if you are thinking about going back for a full week sometime soon, maybe invest in the 10-day no expiration park hoppers ... pay a little more now and save big time on your next trip. i was thinking about doing that next time.

YES do it. Friends of ours are able to go five or six times during the year. They call it "getting their disney fix." I am always jealous when they make the announcement that the spur of the moment trip is on. The good thing is that they always ask if there is something I would like for them to check out or purchase for me. Usually without asking they will bring back a pin they think I might like.

I do it every year on Columbus Day weekend- I manage to get a visit to MNSSHP and Food and Wine in all on the same weekend.

It's wonderful.

Okay here's the back story.

My wife and I just had a beautiful son a month ago. Needless to say 2011 is almost a write off for a trip which is fine because we did a lot of nice trips prior to him being born (2 to Orlando, Dominican, Cuba) over the last 3 years.

However, once things start to settle down and there is a routine in place a weekend trip or two in 2011 will happen. We both have very supportive parents and my mother the other day just out of the blue wonder where we would like to travel this year. I wasn't even thinking of it and I figure it's too soon for a week long vacation but maybe a long weekend getaway is do-able. She agreed to look after our son whenever it happens.

So, I have this crazy idea of flying Friday morning out of either Toronto or Buffalo (I live in Canada) to Orlando. Buffalo has cheap flights and I figure we can use the full day Saturday and full day Sunday to go to Magic Kingdom and another park like Islands of Adventure on the Sunday since I have never seen Potter yet. Then we fly out Monday and are home Monday night.

First off, answer this...........am I crazy?
Or have others done this on a whim?
I know it will cost a few bucks but considering how much we love Disney it will be worth every penny and I am content with just staying off-site in a Super 8 hotel for three nights.

So am I nuts?

No part of a trip to Disney is nuts.

I agree with you on the AP. That's the best bang for your buck. Plus you can get the discount on the rooms.

I do a lot of weekend trips, but it is a little different for me since I just drive there. I have to say I find that weekend trips are depressing. Just when you start to get into the Disney mood, it's time to go. Then you wish you would have stayed a week. Or two. Or three. :)

I wouldn't say depressing but definitely remember thinking I wish we stayed another day or two!! But I think that goes with most trips :D
