Is Disney Pricing themselves out of the Middle Class???

wow, I guess I always considered myself middle class... guess I was wrong. Perhaps there are a crap load of single income earners in America these days.

Middle-class depends on where you live, too. If you live in the mountains of west virginia, $50,000 is higher than average.
In NJ, $50,000 would leave you at the bottom of middle-class, which goes from about $50,000-200,000.
Cost of living matters.

Not sure which hard ticket event you went to but, we took our 2 year old to MNSSHP and we were MISERABLE!!!!!! There were so many people there you coldn't move!!! We saw about 3 characters up close, the others, like all 7 dwarfs with Snow White, Cruella, Mickey, Minnie, et all; were at the end of lines that were well over 150-200 people thick. There wasn't even elbow room while walking. We also went to The Food and Wine Festival one of our nights while there...BIG MISTAKE!!!! We statrted in Mexico and by the time we got to Italy, we jumped on the boat and got the heck outta there. Even on the regular days, we waited at least 30 minutes on busses to pick us up to get back to hotel.
I said that all to say this: I don't think the ticket prices being raised will have any effect on the crowded-ness! They are just over selling daily. That was the most miserable Disney trip I had ever experienced in 22 years. If it is the same way this May when we go.....I'm afraid our vacation $$$ may be spent somewhere else!
But now, with that being said, I wish every child, rich or poor, would have the opportunity to visit this magical place. :)

I think you miss-read what I wrote about hard ticket events. In the past they were a good deal because they were much less crowded. But I also mentioned that they seemed much more crowded recently. I know about 6 or 7 years ago we went to a MNSSHP that was sold out and it wasn't that bad crowd wise... Now a year ago we did the same thing to one that wasn't even sold out and it was much more crowded. I'm convinced they are making more tickets available to those hard ticket events.... so much so that may not be worth it from a strictly avoiding the crowds point of view.

I absolutely think Disney is raising prices too quickly and by too much. We have been making regular trips since 2003 and I am shocked to see the price increases over the last few years. I have really noticed the increases in room rates which I always expect to go up a little every year, but the last two years they have been increasing by leaps and bounds.

I think the worst thing though is that the price increases are not justified by any increase in quality. Just returned from a week trip two days ago and DH and I both agreed that food quality has diminished, bus service has gotten worse (especially in the mornings), and more rides were broken down that ever before. And saddest of all, DH and I discussed not going back to WDW any time soon (which is unheard of for us) because they keep raising prices but have not really improved the parks. The "refurbishment" of Test Track was a joke, the new Fantasyland has really been a let down, and all the new Next Gen stuff really feels like a way to make more money than enhance guest experience.

It is frustrating when you have to do the same thing for the umpteenth time just to have something to do and kill time in the parks. I mean come on, Indiana Jones is the SAME show as it was when I went to HS for the first time in 1990. I guess I have just finally reached my breaking point with Disney.

The good news, if you want to call it that, is that a growing number of people are reaching their breaking points and simply no longer vacationing at WDW. Attendance is down 2 of the last 3 years. Maybe, just maybe, TDO eventually will stop taking its "guests" for granted.

I'm really beginning to question whether Disney executives in Burbank want to be in the theme park business. I suspect they'd sell DLR and WDW if not for the PR nightmare it would create for the Disney brand.

It hurts to type this, but it does seem to me that an awful lot of Disney's theme park budget seems to go into ways to best exploit the guests, rather than please the guests. How to squeeze the last possible dime out of them, instead of making their visits into cherished memories. I remember reading a story about Walt in which he one day decided that Disneyland was going to have a Christmas parade. The board of directors objected, saying it wouldn't add to the bottom line and that it wasn't something guests were expecting. Walt said, "That's the point" and went ahead with it. You see why I love that man? I weep when I think of what his company has become and of the kind of people who rule it. It seriously makes me want to cry. :(

And what if everyone feels like this?? I see you've been over 20 times, as have lots of others. Disney needs to realize we, as well as our offspring will continue to be the backbone of the amusement park side of this company. I respect them enough to give them our vacation $$$, you would think they would return that respect with just simple improvments that would enhance my "Magical" experience. I don't care how cool they think the new armbands are, or all this interactive attraction stuff....I want a BODY standing there smiling, singing "zippity-doo-dah" as I walk down Main Street. I want to sit down on the bus on my rife back to my resort at night..and not have to stand in line for 2 hours for that bus. I want a clean room, a decent meal, REAL TEA (not black tea), I want to see the person behind me be brought up into the parade, I want there to be NO SMOKING anywhere premesis, I want the line for Soarin' to have some sort of organization to it. And I would like to see teenagers give there seat up for a dad caring a sleeping child on his shoulder, because it's just polite. I would like to have all these things that don't have to cost a bundle for Disney to improve upon! Ok, so maybe they can't tell folks where to sit, that's societys problem. But, most of these fixes would make me so happy and cost very little. Oh, and MK, DS, and AK need to add at least 2 rollercoasters each. But, hey, we can work on those!!!

*sorry if I offended any smokers. My husband is one and he patches it all week when we go!! .....you would think after a week to 10 days he wouldn't want to ever have another...but man, we usually have to pull off the side of the road after leaving the airport, just to let him suck one down!!! Dang those tobacco companies, they are as bad as Disney!!

Sorry, for some reason my reply posted in the middle of your post @MickeyKimmey..sorry!

My reply starts at "What if everyone feels like this?"....and ends with me comparing tobacco companies to Disney. Yeah, it makes more sense to read my reply in its entireity! Sorry! :)

I totally agree that Disney will eventually price most people out of WDW vacations, but it won't bother them until it hurts the bottom line. It's all we can do to go once a year, and we can only manage a "deluxe" trip every 3 years or so. Pretty much every cent of extra income goes in the Disney pot to afford that. We're only a 6 hour drive away, so we can typically do an "on the cheap" week for $2,500 or so. Even if money was no object I'd still have a hard time parting with $5k plus of my hard earned money for a week in the parks per year.

They told Walt to charge and arm and a leg inside the park when he first built DL and he said he wouldn't charge anymore for a cup of coffee inside the park than what it costs outside, and now... I forgot my point, Starbucks coffee is super expensive on the outside too...
