Is Captain EO gone?

To say that they should shut it down overlooks the fact that MJ had and still has fans even with his checkered past. I always preferred EO to honey I shrunk the audience and on our last trip to Epcot my wife finally saw it and thought it was cool, definitely the height of 80's tech but still cool.

When I saw it at Disneyland, back when it reopened, people gave it standing-freaking-ovations. The collective gasps when he appears are like nothing I've ever seen to a film before. There were a disproportionately large number of African-American families in the audiences I saw it with, which I account to the fact that a lot of folks wanted their kids to experience something they don't usually get - someone who isn't lily white starring in a Disney production. Or just to prove that, yes, once upon a time, MJ really was a black man. ;)

Joking aside, WDW also gets a large amount of overseas vacationers, to whom the "scandals" never really made the kind of news they did here, and Disneyland has a space issue that Epcot doesn't. Even with it's low-crowds, it only takes a couple of CM's to run it and as Epcot so desperately needs every attraction it has, I would assume it would close up shop at Disneyland long before we'll see it leave here.

Disney isn't investing in 3-D sit-down experiences right now because folks can go to the theater now and see full-length films in 3-D. It doesn't make sense to make a huge investment where the only difference is you might get water squirted on your face. As neat as they were, I think 3-D films in theme parks like this (that aren't accompanied by motion/ride vehicles) are pretty much a thing of the past.

I have no problem with EO going away, but my concern would be that we'd end up with another venue sitting empty for years. I'm not sure future world can afford that.

Considering it's now 5 years (5!) since he passed, it's probably time to let it go, but while it's dated, I don't really see the issue. Does anyone believe we'll actually get a replacement? I'd rather have EO, a reminder of the better days, than another empty theater/pavilion. And if it weren't for that, we'd have the just as dated Honey show probably being run into the ground by now.

WDW needs to get out of the mindset that they aren't allowed to update anything because of those "once in a life time" visitors. I'm sure those visitors will be just fine seeing a NEW attraction. I also think it's just an excuse they use to not spend money.

Is it impossible to put out on 3-D Blu Ray and call it a day? Sure, you miss out on the 4-D effects... but I think the fans will live. I agree with the sentiment that it was a novel tribute for a year or two after MJ's death, but 5 years later is just laziness on Disney's side. Hurry up and get something new in there, and officially retire EO with a Blu-ray tribute that (interested) fans can have forever.

Only one time it aired in 1996 on MTV...This is that airing...And is the cleanest copy out there on Youtube...

The entire Imagination just needs to be given the Horizons treatment.

Unfortunately I fear that you may get your way on this one. Tearing down/gutting attractions and replacing them with inferior ones is what Disney has been doing to EPCOT Center for twenty years now. All they seem to care about is drawing in hordes of (unwelcome) kids and cutting costs everywhere. The good attractions are either gone (WoM, Horizons, TLS) or changed into something inferior the original (SSE, JII, UoE, Communicore).

World Showcase didn't get it quite as bad. But El Rio del Tiempo sucks now with yet another moronic cartoon overlay, and they'll likely wind up doing the same to Maelstrom. I just don't get why the adults couldn't have just one park?

I thought the adult park was Pleasure Island. More profit in selling overpriced lighted spinner toys than over priced alcoholic drinks. Less protein spills to clean up too.

3D / 4D was cool in the 80's / 90's.
Now I have a 3D TV in my living room. I don't need to see it at a theme park.
So much THIS!!! I totally agree on all 3D/4D attractions. I can see 3D at home, or even just due to the widespread nature of 3D movies in most theaters now. As much as I like PhilharMagic, I think it and Muppets and EO are all a bit outdated now that the (3D) technology is easily available. I would see nothing wrong with replacing EO as an entirely new attarction. I think Muppets and Phil and Bug's Life are fine for the 4D action... but I would be disappointed if any new 4D (non-ride) attractions are built!

I hope you're wrong on this! Even though the attraction is a sad representation of what it once was, I'm hoping that someone, someday will open up the checkbook for a revitalization of this pavilion. I mean, it kind of represents the essence of Walt Disney, the company, their accomplishments and that whole division that was created (Imagineering) all around the very idea it is supposed to represent. I've never been called a "Polyanna" in my thinking, in fact I'm usually very much a realist who is often referred to as an pessimist, but I would like to hope, and if I can quote a song, "There's a great big beautiful tomorrow" in store for this attraction!

It sounds corny, I know, but, I really hope someday they will devote enough money and the right ideas to make this pavilion what it should be. If only there were a willing investor/partner who would get involved, like maybe Apple, Google, IBM, Microsoft, Intel, etc. surely one of these could bring life to this attraction! The thing that Disney lacks and hasn't really had since Walt died, is an enthusiastic front-man who can sell the company and its ideas or who can help another company sell their ideas in a way that the public loves, an "evangelist" really. Steve Jobs had that same ability and charisma, but I can't think of any one else right now, certainly not on their level.

Pleasure Island was great! Right up until they totally destroyed it. Such a shame that Disney just can't seem to stop pandering to families. Of course families are their bread and butter, but having one theme park and one nightclub area just for the grown-ups was a great idea. Now Universal's City Walk gets my party money.

I hope I'm wrong too! ;) I just get a bit pessimistic when it comes to renovations at EPCOT Center. They have done so much wrong, and so little right. Maybe JII does have a great big beautiful tomorrow, if we're all lucky we'll get a worthy successor to the original ride, and a proper ImageWorks upstairs where it should be.
