Now will better games get people to upgrade or a lower system price? Historically consoles really jump at that first revision and the prices drop. I guess the real answer is there's more than just one thing causing the issues. Lol
I think GTA6 coming out next year and it only being for consoles initially will get people to pick up a PS5 or Xbox Series X. These huge heavy hitter games are what sells consoles. Most people don't care about the bells and whistles of these consoles as seen by Sony admitting that most of their customers play games in performance mode.

At first I thought the same. The reason I say prices need to come down on the systems is because the industry isn't moving forward. When companies bring their big games to last gen well after the current gen release it tells me there's a problem with current gen. I'm not sure I've ever seen games 3 and 4 years into the life of a system get ported backwards.

Now that doesn't mean the bloat doesn't need to be addressed and taken care of. But AAA games have always cost a lot. So that's why you need more systems sold. Now will better games get people to upgrade or a lower system price? Historically consoles really jump at that first revision and the prices drop. The prices haven’t come down partly due to things outside of their control. The reason games still come to last gen is because the budgets are so astronomical that publishers want to hedge their bets. The PS5 hasn’t sold poorly at all so the price of the console isn’t really the issue otherwise everyone would be buying an Xbox Series S.

That will sell some systems for sure. My guess is that Playstation sees a lift but Xbox stays more flat. If it's running significantly better on Xbox you should see a lift for that machine. But my bet is rockstar is focusing on ps5 since that's the lions share of console sales.

That's the catch 22 though isn't it? If there were more systems sold, they'd have a larger base to sell the game to. Even moderately budgeted games have had a tougher time if it's only current gen. They know that millions upon millions of people have not upgraded and are still very active on last gen hardware.

Ps5 has done well. It's slowed down a good bit though, hence the sales forecasts getting cut. The S has a stigma unfortunately. It was a good idea, and was doing well for a while. But then the stories of development being held back because of it, and situations like balders gate really tainted it.
The prices haven’t come down partly due to things outside of their control.
That's true. I guess my hang up is a couple things. I find it hard to believe after 4yrs the cost of components hasn't come down at all. Especially on the Xbox front. It all comes down to competition. There isn't any at the moment so there isn't a need to drive down costs, or instead, drive up value. Sony is fine as they're number 1 with very little effort. Microsoft said they lost the most important generation, so they're screwed and only care about gamepass now. So while I wouldn't expect to see the standard series x and ps5 to be $299. I would expect a better value for the same cost at this point at a minimum. So the whole price thing just seems to be mostly choice in my opinion.

Microsoft said they lost the most important generation,
The funniest thing about this statement is that Nintendo lost that very same generation to a MUCH larger degree and look at them now. Nintendo’s Switch output far exceeds the quality of what we saw on Wii U and that’s why it sold as well as it has. Maybe if they weren’t turning out mostly slop and Halo was treated like the flagship franchise it is things could turn around?

Nah, it’s better to just throw in the towel and to let 343 continue to destroy your golden goose lol.

Amen to that. And in that same conversation where he said that. He also said exclusives don't sell systems, and that's just nonsense. I feel it's just a bunch of excuses to justify their poor performance.

As far as Halo goes, how they've kept 343 on it for this long is a mystery to the world. They can't seem to release a whole package. The Infinite campaign was really good. It's extremely underrated in my opinion. But the multiplayer was a train wreck from a functional live service standpoint. It felt great playing but there wasn't a whole lot of substance there.

Doesn't help that when they do release a banger, Microsoft proceeds to close the studio that made it 🙃

Technically they didn't close it. They ended up selling it to Krafton, the pubg studio. And the beauty is they let them keep hifi rush. So after all was said and done, the type of game they said they really need, they just gave away.

I’m seeing more and more people come to this kind of conclusion with the PS5 Pro.

I wonder how Sony’s feeling about it.

Well you know you have an issue when IGN isn't slobbering over something PlayStation. Lol
But realistically Sony is in, we can do no wrong mode. So I don't think they believe any of the negative press. The best thing that can happen for console gaming is that this thing is a historic flop. I have not seen any sites get behind this thing. Or fans for that matter. And Sony supporters are hardcore supporters. We're talking about fans who trashed Xbox exclusives then made sea of thieves the number one game on PlayStation. And web sites who gave sea of thieves a 6/10 for Xbox and 9 pn PlayStation. Lol

A lot of disparities come from the fact that the internet for the most part doesn’t represent the real world. We have to hope the type of normies that buy the new iPhone every year don’t overlap here and we’ll have to wait until next year to really look at sales because this thing is guaranteed to sell out its first holiday when the hardcore fans come out to pick it up. Even the Wii U sold out when it came out.

Yea that's about as solid of bet as you could make. There's two things for certain. The scalpers will be all over this, and they will buy the majority of the stock. I'll be curious to see what the ebay listings will be. I'm going to say around $1200 to $1400. And Sony will not be stupid enough to overstock this thing. They will keep stock low to guarantee sell through knowing the scalpers will be all over it. That way they shout how successful it is. It's a page right out of the Nintendo playbook.

We’ll see how the Switch 2 launches. The CEO of Nintendo has stated specifically that they want to have plenty of stock available and other measures to combat scalping.

That would be nice. I'm skeptical since they've been doing it since the 64. The problem is Nintendo, Xbox and Sony want no part of systems sitting on shelves. Any illusion your system isn't selling is bad news. They want that good press of "systems out of stock everywhere!"

To be fair concerning Sea of Theives, when the game first launched on Xbox it was genuinely unfinished. In the time it took to launch on Playstation, the devs added a bunch of content and fixed some of the more glaring issues.

Oh I totally get that. Here's the issue I have with how IGN did it. They should have done an update review. They conveniently left the Xbox review up and gave a new review for PlayStation. They do re-reviews all the time so in the interest of being fair, that's what they should have done. So consciously or unconsciously they are biased when it comes to how they handle PlayStation vs Xbox.

This woman deserves so much more attention than her channel has. Someone with first hand experience at high positions in the industry. I’m currently on a binge lol.

Edit: Wow. I had to go back and edit to include this one.

Edit 2: Last one I promise lol.

WHY AREN’T THERE MORE PEOPLE LIKE HER?!?!?!

Personally I’d be very happy with this power level if it means games that can run on the Series S could potentially be ported over.

Concord is now officially the poster child of everything discussed in this thread. 400 million freaking dollars…
Imagine if Sony used that money to revive their graveyard of dead IPs instead of investing in this game that appealed to no one or remastering PS4 games that no one asked for.....it's a shame.

It will be very interesting to see the impact, if any, this has on the industry. It's definitely going down as the worst game/studio failure in gaming history. Will any of them listen to what the fans are telling them? Or will they carry on making slop like concord and then blame the fans as the reason it failed?

The last two generations have been bad. ps4/Xbox one and ps5/series, both generation were very weak compared to the two generation before those. As long as every game developers main focus is trying to get the next live service phenomenon, things are just going to get worse. They need the remasters and re-releases to offset the losses from all the failures. Concord is just the cherry on a huge crap sunday. And anthem, gothem knights, suicide squad, skull and bones, avengers, redfall... Are the sprinkles.

The studios are looking for the constant revenue stream, and reviving old franchises will only give them a small win here and there. It's really no different than the clown show that's running Disney now. The future doesn't matter, it's all about right now, let the next guy worry about it. Embracing your legacy only works for Nintendo apparently. So many video game companies have amazing games that have been dormant for 20 or 30 or more years. Look no further than Sega. Two of modern gamings biggest franchises came from this very thing. Bethesda revived fallout from a 2d isometric game. And Ubisoft, while technically assassin's Creed wasn't a revived franchise, Prince of Persia was. And that became a decent success that lead to the creation of Assassins creed with it's tech.
