This whole Concord situation I think ties into this topic well. I've been racking my brain trying to find a remotely similar situation and I really can't. This was a complete rejection of the product. And as far as I can tell this game took 8yrs and cost 100mil plus. It won't surprise me if this studio gets shut down in a few months or so. It's not a surprise to me that it didn't do well. I didn't expect them to shut it down in 2 weeks and refund even physical copies.

Outlaws is another one. Not anywhere close to the scale of Concord, but it's so far underperforming big-time. And as far as I can tell a much bigger budget. I haven't played it yet, but watching the trailers, gameplay... I'm not going to pick it up. Maybe at 20/30$ once all the bugs are gone. Unfortunately it just seems like the typical Ubisoft open world, and I'm pretty burnt out with that right now.

We’ll see what happens with Assassin’s Creed. If that doesn’t do well Ubisoft is cooked.

Edit: I feel bad for some of their developers. Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown was actually a solid game from the same people that did Rayman Origins and Legends. If Ubisoft goes the way of THQ I hope someone sees the value in that team and keeps them together. My long shot hope would see them get snatched up by Nintendo.

Most definitely. It's already been under some scrutiny so hopefully it's really good. I have a feeling if it's just another reskin of odyssey/Valhalla...it might struggle. It seems to me there is also some "rejecting the establishment" going on too. I see a good amount of people who aren't buying just because they're sick of these big developers.

The failure of Concord is multifaceted IMO. One of the biggest ones was the fact that it cost $40 despite all of its competition being free to play. Though even if it was FTP at the start I still think it would've failed anyway. Games like this rely on their heroes as the main selling point and the character designs in Concord are genuinely awful. The game looks fantastic graphically but the art design is yucky looking. The gameplay is more akin to Destiny PVP rather than the hero shooters its competing against which would also turn that demographic off (especially people who are sick of Overwatch 2's shenanigans and want an alternative). Concord also barely had any marketing. Yes, it was shown at State of Play but the average consumer is not watching that event. I've seen a ton of people say they had never heard of Concord until the announcement that it was being shut down.

Outlaws is more of the same from Ubislop, which shouldn't surprise anyone. The game looks amazing graphically but can't escape that core Ubislop game design philosophy.

As if to perfectly sum up the problems of AAA bloat being discussed in this thread the PS5 Pro has just been announced.

For $700.

Disc drive and vertical stand sold separately.

lol.
Nintendo should drop an announcement that just says "$400" for the Switch 2 and watch Sony be absolutely obliterated.

Yea I just saw that a few minutes ago. What a joke. I think the problem is Sony obviously isn't scared of Xbox. And why should they? Microsoft isn't really giving them a reason to be. I'm sure they think by next generation Microsoft will go the Sega route. So Sony knows they are the only high end console in town.

I mean does anyone think that the new series X & S will actually sell any measurable units? I don't. They're still too expensive.

Yea it's typical Ubisoft. The graphics are good, but I rank graphics probably 5th or more on my list of things to look for in a game. The big issues I see is I want an open world more like witcher 3 not assassin's Creed Odyssey. The other issue is if you wanted to make a Han Solo game, just make a Han Solo game.

I don't think Concord looks all that great. That could be the art design for sure. The environments looked ok but as you say, the characters were awful. I'm just not sure how out of all the live service games Sony had in the works. This was the cream of the crop? This was the one that made it and wasn't cancelled? The only thing that makes sense is it was just too far along so they said let's just hope for the best.

Like what Sony did to SEGA way back when? ;)

$400 for Switch 2 would really be the sweet spot.

That's one of my favorite moments and worst moments in gaming history. I was a Sega fanboy from the master system though the Dreamcast. This announcement basically sealed Segas fate. They really never recovered from it.

Thanks for opening that wound!!!

When I say Concord looks great, I mean more so the graphics vs. the art design because yeah, the maps were dull and lifeless and the characters are Guardians of the Galaxy rejects. Most people that bothered to review the game said it had really great PC/PS5 performance so the game did function well even though it was DOA.

I think I saw that Sony has at least 10 "Games as a Service" titles in the works. Ugh, no thank you. I do think it's funny that they confirmed Concord was in development for about 8 years. What other massive game released 8 years ago that went on to win Game of the Year?

We’re seeing first hand what the effects of Xbox being weak did long term. It was funny at the beginning of last generation but now we’re seeing the consequences of an overconfident Sony with no real competitor.

I can only hope Nintendo’s approach doesn’t change and the CEO sticks to what he’s said about not assuming success.

One YouTube video I saw completely nailed it and referred to the Concord cast as GotG background characters.

I thought it was more than 10. But I also believe they cancelled most of them. That's what is funny about this. Concord was the best option? Lol

Yup. As an Xbox fan and video game fan I always wanted both sides to do well. Sony has been the least consumer friendly of all of the big 3. And if it's just Sony and Nintendo, god help us all. Lol

More than 10? Guess there will be more than 10 games that I will not be playing : ) I did see the Last of Us multiplayer game was canceled and tbh nothing was really lost there.

Agreed, I like that I can play all of Microsoft's big releases on PC but I want them to do well to keep Sony in check. It does appear that they've learned nothing from the PS3's launch and early years.

Unfortunately that seems to be the way of video games. Sega was doing awesome with the Genesis, and they completely dropped the ball with crazy nonsense like the 32x that they didn't support. Sony then dominated with ps1&2 but let Xbox dominate with the 360. So what does Xbox do? Release the Kinect and all but abandon the core gamer and let Sony back in. So logically the smart thing to do if you're Xbox is double down on Kinect and focus on what every gamer cares about, TV!!!! The big difference with PS5 and the series X is Xbox didn't go after them with the only thing that matters, games. They said, well we lost the most important generation so gamepass is our only hope. I feel like Microsoft is Patrick from SpongeBob.

There's stories all through history, even Nintendo blew it from the wii to wii U. I'm half expecting the next switch to be some abomination that costs $500+ and uses augmented reality glasses with no dock. Because why not, we sold a bajillion switches so everyone will buy this because we're Nintendo! Lol

Looks like the PC master race wins again! Especially in this current gen!

I think the consoles and game developers are in trouble, I haven’t bought a new console since the PS3 and haven’t bought a new game in probably 5 years, I still enjoy playing games but I play them on my iPad or computer, and the vast majority are games I’ve had for years or are free.

With all the recent news about Concord and Outlaws struggling, and potentially dooming their companies, it’s the first I’ve paid attention to gaming in years and honestly none of it appeals to me, I’d rather boot up Roller Coaster tycoon 3 on my PC or play Chess, Soduku, etc on my iPad than anything I’ve seen lately.
