You guys are going to think I'm the biggest dork for posting this, but...
Do any of you have those invisiline braces/retainer things? Have you seen the commercials for them anyway? Well, they are nothing they say they are. After 3 years of ordinary braces, I was forced to get some of these to use for a retainer. The moment they orthodontist put them in my mouth, I knew I wasn't going to like them. They give you a horrible lisp, you can definitely tell when someone is wearing them, they are painful, and they are really hard to clean. I have friends who have regular retainers that say they are nothing like these from what I told them. Anyone have any input???

I know someone who had them, and she hated then so much. She left them in her car, in the heat, and they partially melted, then they didn't fit right, finally she threw them away. Oh, and she did have the lisp. She ended up getting a night-time retainer, and she has a great smile now, and no one had to know about it!!!

HAHA... real funny... we're all laughing...
I only have to wear them at night now, so it's not too bad. They just get so dirty and they're hard to keep clean... nasty :hurl:

Dont get me wrong... compared to traditional metal braces, they have their definite advantages... removable, nonvisable (for the most part), and (im not positive about this) price...

Eh, the orthodontist we refer to doesn't have much use for them. They are ok for minor adjustments but they are not very easy to wear. And they are costly, since they have to keep making new ones, vs traditional braces where they simply tighten the wires.

I hadn't heard of them being used as retainers though. That makes a lot more sense. I still think they sound like a pain though.

If I were to lose or damage just one of mine, it would cost $150! For a piece of plastic!!! It's not like they take much skill to produce, either, b/c I've made one myself.

If they make them too cheap, people will not be careful enough with them. They have to make them somewhat costly to avoid having to remake lost pieces all the time.

Edit- How did you make your own? I thought they were vaccuum-processed over a model. That's some pricey equipment!

True, true, how very true...

My senior year, I interned at an orthodontist office and a dentist office... at the orthodontist, I made retainers. At the dentist I made night guards... same process :D

Yes! That's what I thought! They don't really recommend those kinds of night guards anymore (long term) but we make bleaching trays that way.

I wore traditional braces for 5 yrs, I didn't get them put on until I was 25. Anyway I wore a plastic retainer like your talking about after that, and I found the best way to keep them clean was to use efferdent (fizzing tablets you drop in water to clean dentures). I just put my retainer in a cup of water during the day and dropped the tablets in and it was clean when I put it in that nite.

Wow!! Thanks for the info!!! I'll have to try that!

LOL! Did anyone see the episode where her cheeks "inflate" the day she gets her braces off and has to take her school picture! Imagine seeing that episode 3 days before getting your braces taken off with senior pictures being taken the next day... :hammer: :brick: :D
