Interesting post on Gizmodo about why some of EPCOT's pavement is red in the park

Article is mainly about color and contrast but of note is the last paragraph

"Again, this might all seem a bit out there, but America's most lovable evil geniuses have known about this for years. Walt Disney World took advantage of this effect in their design of the EPCOT park, making the pavements a particular shade of pink that tires out the red receptors and forces the park's grass to look greener than it really is. On second thought, I'm not sure that makes this seem any less out there."

Pretty cool if true, and shows just how awesome Imagineers are.

Yep, making the colors really pop, hue-, saturation-, and contrast-wise. I thought Kodak had something to do with it too.

As the spouse of an ex-CM, I can tell you that Disney is very much in tune with the science of color and it's effects and does a LOT of things with that information.

There's a big section of the book Designing Disney about color. Everything from the differences in the color of the sky in California, Florida, France and Tokyo requiring the Castles be painted different colors, to buildings, costumes, etc. Very interesting read!

Reminds me of a recent Jim Korkis (sp?) segment on one of Lou Mongello's podcasts. Korkis claimed to have been told by an imagineer years ago that the colors of buildings are subtly different between DL and MK to compensate for the difference in color of the sky between FL and CA due to CA's lower air quality, so that the two parks would look more similar than they would if the buildings were painted identically.
