Injured duck at Riverside

I thought that the other animal lovers out there would like to hear this story.

On our last day at Riverside we were feeding the ducks just beyond the food court on the Bayou. We noticed one small brown one who stayed to the back of the group, waiting until the others had moved on to come closer. Then we noticed that the top piece of her bill was broken off ! You could even see her tongue as she tried to pick up the popcorn and pellets.

I went to guest relations inside the resort lobby and told the young man. He called for another CM and I explained the problem to both of them. The second CM picked up the phone and called Animal Kingdom. They had me show them exactly where we saw the duck and then told me that AK handlers were on the way to pick it up. They said the duck will probably remain at AK for the rest of its life.

I was so pleased that they took me seriously and did not just say "thank you" and go on with business as usual.

I wonder if you can send a get-well package to a duck ?

Ask Donald; I'm sure he could give you a few gift ideas.

You're right- it's nice to know that they really are taking care of their critters. Poor thing- I wonder how that happened to her.

We saw that duck back in October. When we pointed it out to a cm (where you get the boat to go Downtown) he said it's been around for a long time. Glad some one finally did something about it. I'm sure it will be a lot happier at AK.

Birds are my family's buisness and I can assure you he will be fine and should have a long life. In captivity a beak is more of a luxury than anything, they can eat without them once they learn how.

Well, if they don't they die quickly. :( They debeak chickens at chicken farms and they seem to do well.

Poor ducky!

Good to hear she'll be kept safe at AK. Real good.

I love ducks.

and squirrels.

Speaking of squirrels, there is a shed in a neighbor's backyard that I can see the roof of from my bedroom. I noticed there is a sort of discoloration on the roof shingles, an elongated blob of sorts that doesn't match the color of the roof. I noticed that there are many squirrels on the shed; it seems they have made a den or something inside and are frequently going up on top to do whatever it is that squirrels do.

What's odd is that the discoloration, the blob, on the roof, seems to have roughly the same dimensions as the live squirrels - and is the same color.... gray in the mdidle, with darkish tones on the tip of the "tail."

Note that this "blob" is basically flat against the roof. It does not appear to be 3-dimensional... But from another angle, it seems to have a slight thickness to it. But obviously not the thickness of a live squirrel. It looks like it's got no bones and it was steamrolled.

So I'm thinking: Have we got a rotting squirrel on the top of this shed? Did it fall off a tree onto the roof (a possibility)? It's really gross when you look at it... and imagine that it's a dead, rotting, squished, boneless squirrel.

Ahh, the mental picture that paints. LOL. I also love squirrels. Well, actually, just about anything with 4 legs and a tail or two legs and wings qualifies.

It's a terrible mental picture, but one I thought I should share with you all... lol...

We're not sure though... It might just be a piece of wood. Could be. Should be. Hopefully is. But maybe isn't.

Yes... all critters are adored by me. Squirrels, rabbits, ducks, kiwi birds (though I've never seen a live one), anything furry or feathery, plump, with an innocent and cute, genteel face. :) Mmmmm! I love critters!
