i like phoebe waller-bridge. i found her to be talented & very funny. fleabag was great. but to use a catch phrase “i got a bad feeling about this.” i don’t think this will go over well. just conclude the series & give him a great send off.

Seems dumb and I am assuming this is just non-sense rumour because everything these days is, "previously white male lead story now done with strong woman and/or different race." As Hollywood can't break out of the reboot/sequel issue and it's the only way they can now justify doing them.

I adored Fleabag but nothing about Phoebe Waller-Bridge screams lead of an action/adventure franchise.

I personally don't even understand the notion of why anyone would think a franchise like Indiana Jones could be spun off to follow a completely new character. It's centrally focused around one character. With Iron Man spinning off the MCU, it already was a big expanded universe and the brand was Marvel. It wasn't Iron Man Present's Captain Marvel.

How would you even title or brand an Indiana Jones film that didn't feature the character?

It reminds me of people who think the James Bond films could be spun off into a cinematic universe. Follow other 00 agents. Why does that even need to be the James Bond franchise? People argue the brand will get people to the cinema, but really isn't it just advertising it's a James Bond film without James Bond? It then has to create an entirely new character which holds it's own as one that is an all time classic. That is near to impossible. As opposed to creating something new and letting it develop if thee's merit into a classic character.

Wouldn't trying to tie a film to a singular lead character franchise without that character be extremely limiting to the creative process?

Who wants to see an Indiana Jones film without the character?

The notion with Crystal Skull that Shia Labeouf could take over the franchise was also dumb. Him and his character was compared to Indy and Harrison. Devoid of the manliness, charisma or appeal.

Indiana Jones only works because of the character.

Disney would be better off doing a National Treasure 3 with Ben and Abigal's daughter as the leader. That more naturally leads to a new lead character than a franchise where the main characters name is the title.

The rumors are all over the place. But if I had to bet, this rumor is a good one. This is exactly what I would expect. My expectation is that Kennedy turns Indy into an incompetent bumblings fool and and the new female hero is just perfect and can do everything with no real explanation. I would love to be wrong but the star wars sequels tell me different. The actual funny part of this whole thing is, we've seen how well a female Indy will do. It's called tomb raider and it hasn't gone well. The reboot was the Shawshank redemption compared to crystal skull and it only managed 274mil.

The Crystal Skull should be the slap in the face counter argument to "X can't replace Indy!!" when even Indy couldn't replace Indy.

The established story should be a benefit to telling a new adventure, but, that can fail miserably with an awful script/premise (cf. Crystal Skull).

Taking up the mantle of an established hero can be good or bad... depends on how good the story and movie is.

To pronounce it awful before seeing it is.... what? Prejudice? Only a White male can be the new Indy (cf. 'Mutt')? Nostalgiamania? No one can replace Indy, even a White man? Just dumb?

What's the alternative? No more Indy stories because the actor won't live forever?

To see a mantle being successfully passed on, see Falcon and the Winter Soldier.

Of course it can be a good thing, I just don't think the general fan thinks Disney can handle it. And I really can't say I have faith they won't screw it up either. Crystal skull was a dumpster fire but I would still go with a recast of Shias character and pass off the Indy torch to his son. Or just recast Indy completely and tell stories before the original movies time frame. If I'm wrong about what I said the movie will be like, I'll admit it. I love Indiana Jones and want to see a good movie. But this rumor has bad written all over it.

Update -

UNTITLED INDIANA JONES (Disney) previously dated on 7/29/22 moves to 6/30/23

i have no idea why they keep pushing out a movie, that i dont think even has much demand. Harrison will be a few weeks away from 81 when the movie releases.. between his age and "flying abilities" I am not sure this is wise.

I was seriously afraid Ford wouldnt be around by the time they made this movie, between age and his flying accidents. Hopefully its better than the last one.
