Imagination Track Layout

Now I know there were a posts about the track layout from JII. Like the the turntable is under the que and such...What I wanted to know is this and hopefully Martin can help out here...

When entering the area where the Touch & Taste lab doors are sealed and the track looks like it's a loose piece of track..Is that track piece a part of the original layout or was it placed there just for the attraction?

Interesting question... I noticed that too, but didn't think too much about it. My guess is it is part of the show... where we were supposed to go vs where Figment now diverts our tour.

Could someone post the layouts of the original track for JII, and the current layout of JIYI?

Hm. Interesting question...

Where's Martin when we need him?  I know he definitely has something that would answer this question.

Martin has the layout. I was going to post a still from his latest IMAG tribute video but I figured I would let him. I remember watching Martin stomping on the ground in the gift shop/Image works to hear the hollow sound of the track bed. :)

Since its almost the same thing, what about Test Track, when you approach the Test Course "A" and "B", it diverts you to the left one. Does "B" lead you somewhere.

There have been a few comparison shots of the old track vs the current track, but I can say for certain that the "track" that leads to the door for the taste and touch labs is fake. That wall actually backs up against another show scene, so there's nowhere for it to go.

There *is* an actual track switch along the ride path, but it leads to the maintenance bay. It's between the expanding room with all the Figments and the unload platform, off to your right. (It's in the darness of the singing moon scene)

The original track path was cut just after this maintenance spur. It looped down and around through what is now the post-show area, some as part of the attraction, and some as the original load/unload platforms. It then formed into the turntable circle of track, and re-connected to the current track about at the point where the trains emerge at the loading platform. Essentially they took the point on the track that was closest to the turntable curve, connected those two points, and cut out everything else.

Since its almost the same thing, what about Test Track, when you approach the Test Course "A" and "B", it diverts you to the left one. Does "B" lead you somewhere.

"Track Course B" leads to the vehicle storage track. It leaves the track at that point (after the Corrosive test for those who don't know the layout enough), goes under the handling turns, and joins the track in the darkness between non-ABS and with-ABS brake tests. Sometimes you can see an empty vehicle on your left as you approach the with-ABS brake test, waiting to be added onto the track. This track spur is intended only for fully operational vehicles that can be called into service at any time.

Test Track also has a separate maintenance bay track. It leaves the track by the seatbelt check (you can see it on your left), circles behind the unload platform (and over the on-ride photo area and some of the post-show), and re-joins the track at the far end of the loading platform.
From the maintenance bay, vehicles can also be wheeled outside and over to an external garage where they can have more-involved work done on them. (You can see this garage if you look down and to your right *immediately* before you re-enter the building after the high-speed loop)

 As Rob said, the spur is fake. Look closer as you pass in full light and you`ll see it dead ends into a piece of black wood. Behind the wall is the front part of the load area. Don`t think I ever posted these, did I??

- just something from a lot of research I did. Note the real track spur towards the top left. Regarding Test Track, course B does actually lead to the backstage storage track (not the maintainance bay track seen to the left at the seat belt check)

Wow. I really did not know had bad the ride was raped during it's change. It is one thing to add a gift shop/store to the exit of an attraction, another thing altogether to build the store over existing track. I guess I did not remember enough of the original attraction to notice.

One thing I do remember is the animatronic Dreamfinder in his flying machine. I assume it is marked on the 1983 map as Flight to the Imagination. Were there five of these animatronic/blimps, one in each of the indicated bays?

^ yep. Such was the scale of the original attraction there were 5 identical sets that rotated with each group of ride vehicles. 5 suspended, animated dream machines. 10 animatronics. 5 rear projection screens and projected images. 5 sets of show lighting. 5 sets of audio systems. 5 soundproof doors. The mind boggles....

I wonder how many vehicles are still around somewhere (other than the one in Mousegears).

And just to confirm, you've said before that the turntable will never turn again, correct? There's no way the suspected upcoming refurb will include that again?

And then last... If and when the refurb happens, is it popular opinion that when it opens back up it will have a track layout like the original again (minus turntable)?

Thanks guys. My pleasure... as always :)

As Lee said, the rotating set will never turn again (it wasn`t a turntable as such, more a set of circular rings joining at the hub like a bicycle wheel, with the show scenes suspended between) - and I wouldn`t hope for all the original track to ever be reinstated.

Thanks Martin. I love your posts. Love your vids as well.

Have you ever considered writing a book? Surely, there must be a market for hardcore Disney history fanatics? Imagineering guides are great, but there is still a lot about WDW that's not covered by existing books.

So if and when JII gets it's refurb, the track will stay the same length?Or can it still be extended into the old pit?
It`s technically possible to use all the old pit, but the merch area needs to be somewhere - and can you see marketing letting it go upstairs or be the small size of the original? Of course if the What If? Labs remained downstairs but the Imageworks was a separate entity upstairs...

I guess I`d love to write a book but I`d never get it finished. I barely have time to edit as much as I used to these days.
