The USA is evolving into a Nation of part-time employees. It is apparently more "cost effective" to have a larger work force of 29 hr./wk. employees, who have to work several part-time jobs, than a smaller one of full-time employees and have to provide medical insurance. The "business mandate" may have been delayed now until 2015 but many service industry companies are still transforming their work force to part-time employees. I recently had this conversation with one of my sons who works for Bucca di Beppo restaurants and is experiencing the transformation first hand.

I'm going to become a local of WDW (Winter Garden) in 2016 just so I can go there every week. WDW has local fans too, ya know. I know that a lot of people on this board are locals of the area.

They do, but not to the extent of DL.

There are WDW locals as well. Do they not matter?

Not to the same extent. Most visitors to DL are local. Most WDW visitors are not. It's different. That, and Disney has more political control in FL, so a lot of Floridians don't like that. We've got friends who live in Tampa and love Disney, but they say most of their local friends won't go.

I also think it has to do with the culture as well. I've been to DL many many times and I go their forums sometimes as well. They do NOT put up with low qaultiy. People at WDW are kinda like "ya whatever. The ride works."

Mostly transplants like us (I want to move too, but for health reasons). It's not to the same extent as DL where to survive they have to appease locals.

The problem is that the engineers can't be everywhere at once. And since I'm not an engineer, I wouldn't say that a simple effect can't take hours to repair. I would keep the ride up, let people experience it.

If the imagineers were to close down a ride for every last little thing that wasn't working correctly, the park would be closed down for good.

There are other threads throughout this board about what would it take for you to cancel a trip and so on with rides going down for lengthy refurbs and such.

AA's not doing what they should is unfortunate, and it does need addressed, but probably as long as whatever is malfunctioning with it isn't a fire hazard, it'll get logged and be diagnosed at some other time.

As you have said, this is why they keep the rides up and running. It's not for a lack of trying, but there are only so many imagineers to go around.

It's a different attitude out there. California, ya know?

Well they were able to keep 99% of effects working 1971- around 2001. Why can't they do it now?

Yes I do. Half of my family is from California and still lives there. I know how Californians are. And I love them to death. :)

Definitely different. The first time I went to DL it was such a culture shock since I'm from the east along with all of my family. This trip there were times I would look at my mother and say, "Oh, we're in CA aren't we?" Their attitude towards life in general seems to be different IMO.

None of us here are engineers. My guess is that the technology is different nowadays and sometimes comes with more downtime. But like I said, none of us here are engineers so we're not in a position to judge.

Yup. Living around Hersheypark I can say that the job postings are all pretty much part time. They'll pay you 7.25/hr to work in a gift shop. But yet, it's $60/person to get in, $12 to park, they also have all the candy profits, merchandise, concerts, etc but they can't pay above $7.25?

Let's not forget that a large portions of companies are also taking the route of temp agencies too. You have to apply with the agency then meeting so many ridiculous standards and you may get converted into the main company that you work for. Most places seem to have you work long enough, then get rid of you, to have you come back in a week and start from day 1 all over again.

It seems that having a college degree won't matter soon. I'm starting to wish that I would've gone into some sort of a trade. Electricians and such can charge what they want. Mechanics are always needed.

I don't think it has to do with new technology. Let me give an example. Splash mountain from 1992- around 2003 had every single effect working all the time. Now they struggle to keep even the simplest things working. It's the same technology and 20 years ahead in time. They should be able to keep it up and running with no problems at all!

We don't know that for sure. Besides, older technology can be hard to keep up too. Stuff breaks. And they just refurbished Splash and everything seems to be working.

Blue prints are on backorder. Manuals are being translated, lol.

Think of it like a car. A Chevy has a GM part. You can find the part pretty much anywhere. You get a high end car like a Ferrari or something and the headlight goes out, you just can't go get one at Walmart. You have to custom order a replacement part.

These AA's and such are somewhat "one of a kind", so what makes one AA work won't be what's in another. So aside from totally taking the whole thing apart, it's kinda hard.

With the new rides and AAs today, they have sensors EVERYWHERE that tells an imagineer exactly what went wrong, how it went wrong, etc. The older rides and AAs that have been around since 1971 don't have that. They have what I said earlier, the "take me fully apart and guess" approach needed.

Thanks for that! Good explanation.:)

Nope. There are things on Splash still not working correctly
Bunny raking leaves only says one of three possible lines of dialogue.
Br'er frog still out of sync
Motionless br'er bear
Fountains are OFF again.
Other than that it is running perfectly. These are very simple effects that can be fixed over night. Why weren't they fixed in a three month refurb?

I did notice a change to SM that probably no one else did. Character dialogue use to be activated by a motion sensor when logs would get close. Now they are put on a constant loop. This is better IMO because some times the motion sensors wouldn't trip and people would just be staring at characters not saying anything. It's weird because I somehow predicted that was going to happen.
