So exciting! Hope u do a trip report on your Cali adventure!

We too, are planning our families first trip to Cali for next year! And like u, I haven't been in over 20 years, since I was probably 7 or 8, and have only been there twice. I have been to wdw more times than I can count on my fingers and toes...my wife and kids have never been.

I do find the planning so different from wdw...it's all so foreign!?! LOL

You can always opt out of the body scanners - you will get a patdown instead

Yeah, she hates that idea even more. I barely get to put my hands on her, imagine how she feels about a stranger..lol.

I told her the good news, that I'm the dark skinned one so she should
go ahead of me and it shouldn't be a problem.

Do you have young kids? My kids get us out of body scanners or at least they have up to this point (2 and 4) Also being pregnant can get you out of scanners. I haven't had to do them yet. They always send us through the regular metal detector.

Another thought you and your wife could apply to a trusted traveler program, no scanners.

I looked this up

In the United States, federal law requires that starting in June, 2013, all full-body scanners must use "Automated Target Recognition" software, which replaces the picture of a nude body with the cartoon-like representation.[4] A side effect of this rule is that all backscatter X-ray machines in use by the Transportation Security Administration will be removed, since the agency said the vendor (Rapiscan) would not be able to meet the deadline.[4]

Our kids will be 14 & 13 on this trip. But I think we'll end up going through the regular metal detectors.

Congrats to you and your sister! We're working on a DL/California trip for next year. I'm looking at either the Best Western Plus Park Place that Raven mentioned or the Park Vue Inn.

Any idea on how easy it is to get approved for this? I'm checking out the site and it looks like we would qualify, but feedback would be great. If we can't get approved then I'm afraid it will come down to just me going, since I couldn't care less about the scanners.

My DH just did it for work. He applied and then they set up a meeting at our local airport he had a small interview and had to show his drivers license and birth cert (which they made copies of) about 2 weeks later he knew the answer. If you have a clean background it shouldn't be a problem. I think it cost about $100 for the background check.

Yeah, it shows as an $85 application fee. I'm assuming that minors have to apply too, but I'll give them a call to make sure. We have clear backgrounds, I just wanted to get an idea before we go dropping $300+ just to apply.

My DH said it was really easy. He always worries because my dad was in jail for drugs when he was younger and my DH made it through just fine.

Can you ask him if it's just for frequent flyers or if it's open to anyone? One site said frequent flyers but I want to make sure.

Congrats on the trip to DLR! We are heading there in June (it's been 35 years since I've been there), taking my mom and 13 year old daughter. On our trip to WDW last year I got out of going though the scanner, just regular metal detectors for my daughter and I, but they made my 72 yr old mother go through the scanner.
