I decided to get to the bottom of the great refillable mug controversy and write about it in my blog - so I called WDW. I got a lady at customer relations who at first thought I was kidding that people get into fights about it. We were laughing so hard - she kept saying, "They fight about it? Oh, you are kidding me!"

http://web.mac.com/wendyd3520/Disne.../18_The_Final_Word_on_the_Refillable_Mug.html

She looked in her manual and checked with her supervisor and told me what I already know, that you can only use it for the trip you are on and have to buy a new one for each trip! :ROFLOL: I declare this debate CLOSED.

(Not that it really will close anything  - I just like sounding official! )

This closes the debate on what the official policy is...not the debate about whether or not violators are morally destitute sub human scumbags. ;)

Since this thread is here, I thought I'd take this time to post some of my thoughts on the morality of the mug issue.

Once I found out what the official policy was, I decided to comply, so don't take any of my thoughts as indications that I, myself, use my old mug for refills, because I don't. But for those who get all self righteous towards those who do, let me ask you a few questions....

Have you ever, or do you currently: Use the office stapler to staple things for personal use? Use an office ink pen to write personal notes, such as, say, a grocery list just for one example? If you do that, do you use office paper to write it on? Do you ever play on the internet while at work? Do you ever use the office printer to print things for personal use? Do you ever, by accident or on purpose, take home a cheap ink pen from the desk, and then not worry about bringing it back because they're a dime a dozen and no one cares? By accident or on purpose, get to chatting on break and end up taking a few extra minutes than you are entitled by company policy? Get stopped in the hallway at work and carry on a personal conversation on office time?

For those who get on a moral high horse and cast stones at those who use their mugs for refills on other visits, take a look at the above questions and tell me honestly if you can really answer "no" to all of them.

You see, the above are all examples of ways that each and every one of us can be guilty of "theft" in the most minor sense. Whether it be time theft by taking a few minutes too long on break, or visiting in the hallway on office time, or theft of a single staple or sheet of paper, there are a multitude of ways in which we all "steal", but do so in such a minute quantity that we don't think of it in our minds as stealing and neither does anyone else. Yet, in the most technical and black and white sense, if you use one piddly little staple from the office stapler, you have stolen company supplies for your own personal use. I don't think any of us would dream of walking into the supply closet and taking out a whole container of staples and taking it home with us. I don't think any of us would dream of making off with an entire ream of paper to fill our printer at home. Yet, how many of us may be surfing the internet at work and print out something that we see that we think is cool? Or check our email at work and get a funny joke that we want to print off? Technically, that's stealing. That's office paper and office time that you're using for personal use. Even if you bring in your own paper, you're still "stealing" that minute amount of ink to print out whatever it is that you're printing.

IMO, it's not that much different when discussing the mug issue. Trust me, WDW, in all the billions that they rake in througout the year, is not losing any money on those fountain drinks that people fill last year's mugs with. The amount of money that you're "stealing" from Disney is probably on the level of a single sheet of paper that you steal from the office to jot down personal notes, or the ink that you use to do it from the office ink pen.

Now, am I encouraging people to violate Disney's refill policy? No I'm not. I'm just saying that before you get on a high horse and pound on your chest saying "what a good little boy am I" and cast judgement on all those desperate outlaws stealing drinks, think of the many ways that you yourself may be guilty of minor theft, such as in the examples I gave above. It kind of puts it into perspective, IMO.

Here we go. :ROFLOL:

Seriously, I don't care. I just think it is so funny that the topic comes up so much, that so much time is spent rationalizing doing it and/or criticizing those who do it.

I wrote the blog article tongue in cheek because it just seems funny to me.

For the record, I couldn't be bothered packing the things to bring back for another trip - but I am not the refillable mug police. Just a WDW fan who gets a kick out of this earth :ROFLOL: shattering topic!!

I know you were just writing it for kicks. But these are thoughts I've been having on the issue for quite a while since I see so many people on here getting the panties in such a twist over what, IMO, is a trivial issue. So rather than start a thread of my own to make my points, I just thought I would do so here.

Again, I don't bring last year's mug back for refills. But I'm not gonna cast judgment on those who do. I really don't care if they do it or not...partly because, as I just explained, in the grand scheme of things, we're talking about stealing grains of sand from the beach in terms of the amount of money that Disney is losing. Not saying that it's okay to steal as long as it's a small amount (I work register at Walmart sometimes and I wouldn't dream of taking a penny out of the till here and there). But on the other hand, as I explained, how many of us can honestly say that we don't steal in the type of minor increments that I listed with my examples? For those who get all bent out of shape about the violators of this policy, I'm just trying to point out to them the logs in their own eyes before they start talking about the planks in someone else's.

I understand! Isn't it funny though the things that get us going - we WDW fans! We are one crazy, nutty group! :)

Ok, maybe this will shake things up a bit.

Your examples would be better if the office worker had first purchased the stapler loaded with staples (same goes for the rest of the office equipment).

Does the employer have a written policy against stapling personal items, etc.?

Robbing your employment one way or another is not right, but it is different from this great debate.

You are forgetting that not only are people getting free re-fills, they also aren't purchasing the additional mug. So the price of the loss is increased to the refill and mug.

It's not about the money, it's about what's right. People aren't perfect and they will make poor decisions frequently, including myself. But, I will buy a new mug if I wan't refills and tell others they are wrong if they don't.

.....and when I bought my first refillable mug the first year they had them, it was good for all future trips, since they figured most people wouldn't bring them back, lose them, or they get damaged and have to buy new ones.

I don't think it says anything in the policy about that. Mary (not her real name) read me the official words, and I didn't hear anything about that!

You know, so many people have told me about this! What does it look like? Do you bring it back? Do they even remember making this offer?

Because if I had been part of that I think I'd be carting it back every time just on a matter of principle!

You said for life! I'm getting my soda for life! :ROFLOL:

My mug from FQ or it might have been Dixie Landings is a teal color lid, handle and bottom and has the aligator or whatever you call him on it that you see as you are walking to the pool at FQ. If I travel with my 4 yr old nephew, I'll bring the mug since we spend more time at the resort, but when I'm with my older nephew or friends I don't since we don't use the foodcourt that much or stay in the resort. No one ever questions you about any of the mugs, they really don't care or have time for that.

Wouldn't it be more "green" of Disney to allow mugs from previous trips? Maybe pay a small fee for the soft drinks during the additional trips.

We brought our mugs back once. But to tell you the truth I couldn't use it. I just knew that I would be the first one to get yelled at in front of everyone for using an old mug. Lights would go off and Disney security would come in and put me in Disney jail for re-using the mug.
