Lagoon shows have worked for 28 years now without needing advance booking. Why does it need it now? Why should those who know about needing to, being able to, and how to book have a superior experience over those who don't?
Except the equivalent of this new thing already exists. So using your argument.. we could argue this has already worked for years.. so what's the big deal?

. IMHO using FP+ for rides is a lot more of a drag assuming that you will have to book your time up to 6 months in advance. You can't be as spontaneous if you are locked into a 3pm reservation at Space Mountain. For a show there is already a set start time. It's not like you can say I'll watch illuminations at 8pm tonight instead of waiting until 9PM. If I am already locked into illuminations at 9PM why not book a reserved spot and avoid waiting around for it to start.
