Iger to leave and become an Ambassador

Why does everyone here on this forum hate Iger? I'm genuinely asking here.

He has continued all the bad habits of Eisner's strategic thinking group, while stifling creativity within in the company.

He's lack of interest and understanding of the brand has led to continued mismanagement of the parks with such blunders as MM+ and the out of control costs and poor return on investments of new additions has only spiraled since the opening of the "nondescript roller coaster in India, or whatever". His whole Disney legacy is taking credit for the work of others by buying properties and producing remakes, while doubting the ability of his own staff to produce anything worthwhile.

He grew the company's stock price through acquisitions and quality cuts and ultimately put the company in possibly the worst position to deal with the COVID crisis (which is likely why he left the position of CEO back in February). He's now desperate to get into politics to prove his inflated ego is justified, while consistently doing things against the liberal ideals he claims to believe in (such as the treatment of his front line workers, even before the pandemic).

The best defense that people give him is that Disney is a business, he needs to look after the stock price and anyone else would do the same. If that's the case, than we don't need someone in charge who has contempt for his own customers and no interest in the company's long term health or creative output.

Diplomats are not exempt from US laws.
Laws, e.g. ...?

Ambassador Iger has his 26th lavish three-hour dinner with his friend President Xi, and casually mentions over dessert how much he enjoyed working with him and his office (staff, etc.) on the Shanghai resort.

Iger adds that the success of the project is an example of American and Chinese cooperation to mutual benefit. He mentions that the Imagineers enjoyed it immensely, and a few of them mentioned how they hoped to work further in China with their friends among the Chinese contractors on a Beijing resort. (Doesn’t matter If it’s true or not.) And wouldn’t that be something, Iger marvels: another grand symbol of the close, productive relationship between our two nations, joining innumerable other projects between American and Chinese businesses.

One of Xi’s staff takes the hint and makes sure to follow-up on this with Xi and then Disney, perhaps through a state-owned company in Beijing (maybe one of entities that own Universal’s new resort there), maybe a few weeks later.

Takes dictionary-definition “literally” 90 seconds, including the time to translate That’s how big projects get rolling in China, etc. sometimes.

As a brit if this is true I’d wish for the reverse. The UK / US special relationship will be strained enough under the new president and Iger isn't really known or respected here. Most people only know him from the prince harry ‘my wife does voiceovers’ discussion from a few years back where he came across quite wrong. His dealings in China would give him some knowledge of Chinese government and background to work with so he’d be better placed there IMO.

Want to elaborate?

This isn’t very classy at all. First Bob Iger says I could have been president or mayor of new york or a senator but ‘my wife didnt like the idea’, then he says he wants to be in the cabinet gets no response then he wants to be an ambassador it smacks of desperation a bit to me you can almost view him pleading to Biden for a job.

Have some class Bob, youre a business man not a politician if you want to do good be like Bill Gates rather than seeking another position of power

No unusual at all. Beltway 101

Uh, not a good example there.

Yeah...but a high profile one.
Bill Gates helped turn Silicon Valley into a boys club that stiffled competition (remember when the government fined them billions for their monopolistic practices?) and pandered to dictatorships everywhere, slowly destroying freedom worldwide.

And don't even get me started with his ties to wealthy pedos like Epstein.

Yeah...he was soulless and cut throat...welcome to the Forbes “man of the year” award.

The rest you kinda are out in the bat 💩fringes with...

Don't let the door hit you where the good Lord split you! Bon Voyage Mr. Iger! Bon Voyage!

Did he go wee in your Cheerios too?

Y'all know nothing's really going to change when Iger leaves the board, right?

The current CEO is staying and is implementing everything Iger did.

For now. Chapek is a placeholder...he’s not the only one who qualifies in the ranks either
That would be incredibly corrupt.
And is irrelevant to this topic as well

Iger being an ambassador has nothing to do with Disney.

He already made his billion off them...he’s not going to care much anymore

Again, corrupt. Universal Studios Beijing isn’t there because the Central Government wanted it there but because of inter-party rivalries between Beijing (the city) and Shanghai.

I’m a fan overall. He’s been a bit conservative with new parks, but he and the board of directors seem cautious and incrementalist.

He still has close relationships with members of the board of directors. It’s a favor that takes 90 seconds. Relationships matter.

Where’s the corruption? What laws would be violated? Would the DOJ care?

Well its no secret Boris Johnson was a leader who got on with Trump and the current president is in general pro British, whereas Biden is pro European Union and probably closer to Germany (like Obama). The president elect has made no secret of his views about the UK and our government. He has been vocal about his negative view of our prime minister and brexit which the UK press report. Its a little known fact that one of the reasons people in the uk voted for brexit was Obama’s comments about the UK being ‘at the back of the queue’ which a lot of people here found insulting to an ally.

Some of his pro Irish views and statements are also inflammatory to those of us who lived through IRA bombing campaigns (google biden no orange)

Ok...

How long do you seriously think Boris is gonna last?

And the coverage here (and the US tends to have a more realistic view of the British situation and vice versa) is Johnson already rolled over and dumped his “alliance” with trump.

Boris is an opportunist...which means there’s no loyalty. Besides he’s got his own problems just starting.

All American presidents are “pro American business”...whatever that means...because that’s what they are forced to be. Except the clown...who no one can ever figure out because he doesn’t know himself.

Sorry to go down the well...I’m just saying that Britain having issues with an old NATO style politician isn’t gonna matter at all. That’s probably already gone.

For me it's his handling of the parks.

Disney needs a revolving door CEO policy in place. Most of these CEOs, (Iger included) start out great but overtime they start to wear out their welcome with boneheaded decisions. Short of splitting up the company with multiple CEOs or something...this is the only scenario that could work, IMHO. Fandom disliked Eisner too but like Iger, I think both started out great and then went downhill overtime because of reasons X and Y. It's inevitable. To Eisner's credit though he at least cared about the parks. Iger treated it like a leper or some company appendage that needed to be amputated. Under his reign he let it go gangrenous.

But the company as a whole is not getting enough feedback and has far too many "Yes Men". There's no checks and balances. I say this in regards to the PARKS only. As a shareholder I like what Iger did in expanding the company's portfolio and his handling of Disney+. But he was never really "Disney"... you know?

Disney hasn't been very "Disney" for a while now. I'd like that to change. And Chapek, well he's just another bot so I'm not very optimistic but we've still to see how he handles the parks and any internal bleed. Might be the best choice yet short term. But he's definitely not right for the company long term, IMO. So...

Good for Iger, may he find joy in pursuing something else. And soon!

The only good thing was that he was able to return Oswald the Lucky Rabbit back to Disney and even he's been very underutilized.

its always interesting to get an outside perspective I agree. Thats the great thing about the internet its much easier to look at the news reports from around the world and make your own mind up rather than following the masses where you are who often have a silent M !

Having worked with a lot of UK politicians my view is that Boris will be around for a while. Partly because he appeals to a core base of support who are silent about his support as it isn’t the done thing to do, and partly because the opposition doesn’t really have a credible alternative who people like. Mrs Thatcher was similar she wasn’t that liked here but there wasn’t a popular alternative either. Boris was written off in 2019 but won a massive majority in our general election so don’t discount him just yet.

Everybody knows the brexit negations were a mess, mainly caused by Teressa May’s ineptitude and the attitude of the ‘ establishment‘ that they knew better than the voters and kept trying to overturn what the people decided. A UK/US trade deal will happen at some point and it will be the same no matter the president because its business based. What will be interesting will be how people who have spent years ranting against a Trump deal will act when presented with a similar one from Biden. UK/US relations will be more strained but will bubble along because they are in each country’s interests especially on issues like Hong Kong when the Europeans have been very quiet
