If you get a letter saying your husband drove through an area known for prostitution, don't worry!

They caught the killers!! They haven't caught whoever forged the papers.

In other Orlando news...

A gator went to the entrance of Wal-Mart in Apopka. He was never aggressive and just kept walking around, trying to decide if he wanted to go in or not, I guess. I frequently feel the same way when I have to go into Wal-Mart. The doors kept opening and closing, so the Wal-Mart people locked the doors. The animal people showed up, but he was going back to the woods, anyway. Probably decided he'd rather use the pink-capped Downy than go to Wal-Mart again for the yellow-capped one. BTDT.

A wing-walker in Tampa fell and his parachute didn't open. :( (Died, of course.)

The cops are driving 90-100 mph on the highways for no reason other than they feel like it. They got in trouble for this last year, but they're still doing it.

Powerball is up to $216 million. Has to get to 300 for me to buy a ticket.

In an "If you build it, they will come" move, Orlando wants to build a soccer stadium. Nobody is sure why anyone would want a soccer team, but that's their plan. A baseball stadium would be better. IMO.

The letter sounded more like an invitation to stay away. Might not be good for local legit businesses? I basically got: you were here. The people who live & work here don't want you here. Our parks are gross so you don't want to come here. Keep out. Again, not sure how this could be productive to turning the community around but okay. Whatever. Haven't been in the Sanford area in so many years I remember nothing remarkable about it anyway. Moving on...

Don't see this practice lasting long...

A great example of good intentions... with horrible consequences and overlap into things they can't get into.

Here is a link to a sample of the letter being sent to the car owners...

http://media.cmgdigital.com/shared/news/documents/2013/10/15/Sample_SPD_Community_Safety_Letter.pdf

The car owner is not being accused of picking up prostitutes... maybe there's a fine line being drawn here, but it seems to me that if your business in the neighborhood is legitimate then it'd be easy to explain your presence there to your wife/husband/SO.

Sanford Police Department Community Safety Letter

Date: July 22, 2011

You’re Vehicles License Plate: YF2VV
Location: 10th St & Maple Ave, Sanford, FL, 32771

The Sanford Community, in conjunction with the Sanford Police Department, is committed to
improving the safety and security of the communities and streets within the City of Sanford.
Numerous residents and business people have expressed their concerns regarding street
prostitution in their neighborhoods. This community safety letter is our way of informing you of
the important initiative underway within this neighborhood and to seek your support.

There is a clear correlation between street prostitution and drug use, including crack cocaine, as
well as a variety of health concerns including H.I.V and Hepatitis. Community members,
including their children, are frequently finding used needles and condoms in playgrounds and
public areas. The increased pedestrian and vehicle traffic has a direct effect on the quality of life
for the community and we need your help to improve this community.

In order to maximize the efforts of community leaders in securing safe streets for their children,
the Sanford Police Department kindly asks that you help the members of these communities.
You can do your part by refraining from bringing your vehicle into this area unnecessarily.

The Sanford Police Department applauds the efforts of this neighborhood in attempting to make
it a safe community for its families and children. On their behalf, we welcome your support for
this important community safety initiative.

If you have any questions, you may consult the Sanford Police Department website
(www.sanfordfl.gov) or you may call me directly at 407-688-5070. Your cooperation in this
matter is appreciated.

Yours truly,

Sergeant Jason Shor

The BEST way to take that is:

"People are complaining about crime, so we have decided to ask people not to go where the crime is. You did. Please stop."

If that is the best the police can do, I'm not sure we need them.

I saw a spring training baseball game in Orlando once. It must have been at an old minor league stadium. They're too close to Tampa Bay to ever get their own major league team.

We don't even have AA or AAA baseball. I'd much rather have that than soccer. Talking to others, No, they don't want it and No, they wouldn't PAY to watch soccer. I know that it is a real sport, but it isn't a real sport most of us care to see. This isn't South America or Europe.

I don't know. Maybe it is popular in Hispanic or Latino communities? Have to see.

What we could really use is baseball.

(Rant over. Sorry.)

It is popular in areas that are more diverse. DC United are very popular here... and it's not just the Latinos.

In all honesty, Orlando may be onto something. It is expected between now & 2025, there will be a large influx of Brazilian population moving to the Central Fla area. Part of this is due to the large amount of tour groups coming to Disney every year, people falling in love with the magic of Disney which creates dreams & ambitions of living & working near the excitement.
Another factor is the economic turmoil currently hitting many parts of Brazil. Combine that with many from that country wanting to move to the states (Florida especially), and you can see why it may not be a bad idea to bring a major soccer team to the region.

Oh gosh. I know we went to some sort of minor league baseball in Orlando when I was a kid. I'd say mid-80s? It's hard to remember. My brothers all played little league baseball so it was a big deal to them.

Orlando had a USFL pro football team, too. The Orlando Renegades. The only reason I remember THAT is because my brother still has a souvenir penant for that team.

I do remember when the Orlando Magic was brand spankin' new...and Shaq was a rookie with a nice house in Tuskawilla on the outskirts of Oviedo. Yep, lived in Oviedo once upon a time, too. LOL!

If the area turns Brazilian, I'm going to be heartily upset. I'm just beginning to learn Spanish. I do love living in a culturally blended area, but for a bear of very little brain, dos languages is enough!! No mas, por favor (y gracias.)

I know a few people like soccer and can especially see Washington, with all those foreigners, making a go of it. Maybe Orlando will, too. We'll see, because it's official now. They're spending $20 million on it..."for the kids." I hope it works out and people like it.

I'd still rather have baseball than soccer.

I like baseball. :)

$20K reward to find the forger who helped those two killers. Jim Rockford would've done it for $300/day, plus expenses.

The cops need help to find the driver of the first truck that ran over a guy who had been thrown from his motorcycle on I-4, near Disney. They know it was unavoidable because it all happened so fast, but when you run someone over, you're supposed to stop. (The other runner-overs will not be charged.)

The lawyer who represented Casey Anthony will be representing a 12 year old girl who participated in bullying another girl so badly that the bullied girl jumped to her death. Girls are so mean. :(

Jobs - yay! Boeing is going to build some kind of space capsules at KSC, which will go to the Space Station and eventually to a private, Boeing Space Station. First (unmanned) launch expected in 2016.

Disney is opening new time-share at the GF today, the 25th birthday of the GF. A cool, one minute video of the beginning-to-end construction process was played. Happy Birthday, Grand Floridian!

It's going to cool off and dry up. About time.

I know this is going down a tangent, but I am not fond of this repeated characterization of people being driven to suicide. It frames suicide as a perfectly normal reaction that we would all undertake when pushed to the right place. A continuation of our societal stigmatization of mental illness. We do not want to face our refusal to see and acknowledge the other issues that are at play in suicide.
