If Disney Has Potter Rights

I think it would have been awesome if Disney had acquired it and did it as a separate park. Then Universal would not need to keep tearing things down to rebuild. But I think Disney did not want to play by Rowling's terms (the size of the small shops, etc). But, as much as I love Disney, I think competition is good for the Mouse and makes him work a little harder. If not, we wouldn't even have the progress we have had in the past few years (albeit it small).

Even though I enjoyed a few of the Potter films I was never a massive fan. I don't think they're that memorable or brilliant. And tbh Universal has gone way over the top with it. So I'm glad Disney didn't get the rights.

Disney is above Harry Potter as far as I'm concerned. The films will never be classics.

You are aware that Potter is a British literature series, right?

I don't know about rights of whatever, but for our first time we went to Univ and IOA a few weeks ago before our Disney trip. Univ... eh..., but IOA, especially Harry Potter... WOW! It was awesome! It's as close to flying that a person can get. The Harry Potter ride alone is worth going to IOA. We all agreed if Disney had that ride, there would be absolutely no reason to ever leave!

Did you enjoy The Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man as well?

Yeah, that was pretty cool and so was Transformers at Univ, but nothing beats Harry Potter. We waited in line for 110 minutes the first time, then again when it dropped to 45 minutes. (My line wait limit is usually 45 minutes max, but it was worth it.) Univ/IOA is definately more advanced technologically, but Disney has the "magic" factor that can't be beat. Even with the HP ride, my family voted Disney was still best!

Islands of Adventure and Epcot are my two favorite theme parks. I find "magic" in both Universal parks and Disney parks. I just love Islands of Adventure though, from the music and architecture in Port of Entry to the awe-inspiring Lost Continent. I definitely think it is one of the best theme parks in the world!

I do agree about Forbidden Journey. I think it's amazing! Though I don't know if I like it better than Spidey or not. It's tough. I am jealous that you've gotten to ride Transformers! I'm an AP holder and I still haven't had a chance to make that hour and a half drive to Universal for Transformers. :(

If I am remembering correctly, and it's kind of a big blur now, Spidey and Transformers were very similar. HP was like nothing I've ever ridden before (you can tell I'm still pumped up about it, ha ha). Everything was so realistic!!

We'd probably have a huge thread speculating about what awesome things Disney could do with it and them announce M&G's. But if they really did announce something awesome, I would be very happy because when Disney does a project like that, it's usually really cool.

I'm trying to find the excerpt, but Jim Hill has said in podcasts that when Disney was in talks with Rowling about a Harry Potter attraction the scope of the project was much smaller; essentially a single attraction at MGM. Rowling apparently snubbed Disney because of the domineering and haughty attitude of those negotiating with her, whereas the Universal representatives were much more polite and receptive to her input.

I am a big fan of both Disney and HP, and I think they both have there own places. HP would not fit in with the whole family thing at Disney but it does fit perfectly at Uni. The books/films get darker as they progress and with the later ones being aimed at over 12's (UK certification) even though my 8 year old has seem all of them I think it is more Uni.
So we will carry on going to both as we get totally different experience from both and carry on in my sunny world and never comparing the 2!

I didn't hear the bit about the Disney reps having attitude, but it would not surprise me. How could JKL not be bowled over by whatever half-cocked proposal they presented, just to be part of Disney?

From what I have read, neither Disney not Uni impressed JKL with their proposals, and she passed on both. She had very specific ideas in mind, and both D and Uni were shocked by her demands. Clearly Uni went back and agreed to whatever to make it happen.
I doubt Disney has come across someone with such a specific vision (and insistence on its realization) since Walt himself.

Long story short: Uni was hungry while Disney rested on its laurels. And probably, the WWoHP is probably the better for it.

God bless the "Ignore" button.
Can you imagine if Disney had made Hogwarts? It probably would be as pathetic as Beast's "castle".
