I thought Song of the South was locked away?

I've been consulting my TV guide over here in the UK, and it appears that the BBC will be screening Song of the South on Thursday 5th August. Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't Disney lock away Song of the South on the basis that it wasn't PC in this day and age, and haven't released it since? :veryconfu

It's never been under lock and key here in the UK.

It the USA it appears they are afraid of a backlash from the politically correct lobby if they ever release it again. Fortunately that's not been the case in Britain. Which is surprising seeing the number of other stupid decisions made under the weight of political correctness over here.

I think that if anything were to block the transmission of this film, it would be another stupid directive from the EU rather than from our government!

Just a guess, but I would suppose that the spectre of America's history of slavery doesn't weigh as heavily across the pond, as least not as a cultural and political subject that still runs deeply with some people.

Slavery was known over here, but granted not to the same extent as America. The city where I live has a slave history. The main concert hall is called "Colston Hall" and they have been discussing renaming it as Colston made his fortune from Slavery.

Having seen Song of the South I personally do not see anything wrong with it. It is set in the time of slavery and the mistreatment of black people. But despite all this the Uncle Remus character maintains his dignity and a sense of fair treatment to all, despite the bad hand he has been dealt in life.

Are they going to play it on the BBC here in America? I must go check the TV guide!

I doubt it. BBC America is a commercial channel owned by the commercial arm of the BBC (BBC Worldwide). It would have to buy the American TV rights just like any other channel... and those rights aren't available to anyone :)

Thanks to all for clearing up that question of mine :sohappy: I suppose we Brits have some consolation for being 4000 miles away from the magic :D

Having said that, WDW or SotS? I'd pick WDW anyday :king:

Any bets some of our American board members will be begging us to record this

Funny you should mention that Ultra Magnus..

Could someone PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE record this for me??! All I have to offer in return is a mix CD of Disney music or some copies of vacation planning videos or something of that nature. Please someone?? </teenybopper> I wish BBC-A would air it, but alas, it doesn't look like they will.

Great film. You used to be able to buy the PAL tape from the UK, from a website, and then you yourself could convert the PAL to VHS at a local video/film outlet. But alas, I do believe that that website I am referring to has been plagued with legal woes (and from what I understand, baseless issues), so I'm not sure of its current state.

Do keep in mind that SOTS DVDs, if they are floating around for sale on auction or other web sites, are entirely illegal, if sold without the original PAL European tape.

But don't quote me for anything I have written above! :)

I "ain't" no copyright lawyer!

I would offer to do this for you but I'm going on holiday on Wednesday, however I do have an original copy of the video and could run you off a copy after my hols if you would like.

(Note: If a copyright lawyer is reading this then disregard anything I've said here, I would never do this) :p

*many hugs* Let me know what you would want in exchange. Send me an email (kristen@webcookie.net) and I'll give you my address and whatnot.

Out of the factory they are different, but many can be cracked with a handest hack to allow them to play DVDs from all regions. Those that don't can probably be chipped. You may need to check that your TV can play PAL signals. Over here most TVs from the last several years will play both systems.

I am pretty sure that American and English DVD's are encoded differently. However, I know you can get a region-free DVD player or flash the drive in your Mac (I don't know about PC's) to be region-free. Mind you, I don't know how to do this, but you can find it on many Mac sites.
