Ugh...Friday I have to have my Wisdom Teeth taken out. They are pulling the top two, and cutting (gasp!) the bottom two. Has anyone had this done, too? Please, someone help me out...What should I expect to feel like right after, what about the next day? I know I sound silly, but I am sweating bullets...Help!!!

I had mine out the just over a year ago. I was worried too lol. I posted about here in chit chat too as a matter of fact lol.

It was nothing...they put me to sleep and next thing I knew I was awake. I ahd no pain, bleeding or swelling. Everyones diferent though. I was eating solid foods by the end of the day I had them out...like I said everyones diferent though. There was no way in hell I was going without real food lol. :D

I remember when you had them out DisJosh...BIG thread arose out of that incident.

I would suggest prayer. If they are putting you to sleep, you will probably be in no pain at all. God bless!

I think it all depends...yours don't sound too bad, so hopefully you'll have no pain or anything. Mine were really bad and I was laid up for a week, but I don't think that's very typical. They'll give you some good painkillers so you shouldn't really have any problems.

my sister got hers cut out a few years ago...she said it was really no big deal...like DisJosh, was put to sleep and the next thing she knew, she was awake!
i on the other hand, have had several (well, about 8) perminent teeth pulled...and i was awake for those! i imagine wisdom teeth aren't as bad since you can't feel them doing anything. though i'm sure i'll have to have them cut out sooner or later...i just have that feeling! i've never been lucky when it comes to teeth, it seems! :D
but good luck to you! you'll make it! promise!

Have you ever wondered (or is it just me) if you really do feel things in your sleep? I mean, when they put you out, do you really feel what's going on, but can't express pain or anything and when you wake up, you can't remember what happened?? Lol, I know this sounds horrible... *evil laugh* :goodnevil :p

I guess it depends on how they pull your teeth.

For me: I was given an IV and was put to sleep. The only fear that I had was of the IV, not getting all 4 of my wisdom teeth pulled! By the time I was awake the doctor gave me a couple of pill and I was on my way home. After a couple hours of sleep I was up and about...without much pain.

As for my friend: She got her pulled while she was awake. She was given a whole lot of novacaine to numb out her mouth. Well the only discomfort that she had was from the doctor breaking the tooth (ick...i'm having a hard time typing that, ick!!!). After that she was on her way home. As for her pain...I think the medication took care of it but she was a swollen from the 'surgery'. She said she felt bad for a day or two.

Hope this calms your worries. Just think of this once it's done you'll NEVER have to deal with it again.

Believe it or not, I've thought the same thing for a while now (since I had to get put to sleep for my compound fracture).
My bro had his out a few years ago and he said it was great... "best sleep he's ever had" were his exact words...

Do they always put you to sleep for this sort of thing?

If they're impacted and your gums have to be cut open to get access to the tooth: yes
If they're not impacted and are poking out of your gums: no

Sleep vs no Sleep...I think it depends on your dentist. It'll cost ya though. I think it ran +$100 just for the IV! But it was well worth it.

Sleep?!?! Yeah sleep. As soon as he stuck it in my arm i started feeling tired. I couldn't even keep my eyes open. I didn't feel a single thing & it all seemed like a 20 minute sleep! In reality it was a 2 hour job! All I remember was me trying to say "Man this stuff is really strong, I can barely keep my eyes open." I only got to the word strong and I was out like a lightbulb!

Whether or not you want to be completely put to sleep should always be up to you. There is even a half-way point called "Twilight" that they can put you into. Basically the more "out" you are, the more you will pay. I went all the way out, only because I have watched so many extractions and didn't want to be picturing them all during my procedure

Don't let the "cutting" talk frighten you. That is such a common thing and it's really not a big deal at all. I assume you are going to an oral surgeon and they are so good with these- it's very easy for them compared to some of the other things they have to do. They are quick, too.

Whatever rules they give you, no matter how stupid they may seem, should be followed. The last thing you want is a dry socket, where the clot falls out and exposes the bone. It is extremely painful. They'll tell you not to smoke and not to suck on anything (drink through a straw, etc) and that's the reason behind it. A lot of people ignore this advice and a good number of them stumble into our office in tears. They'll tell you what you can and cannot eat and that's important too- you don't want to interfere with the healing process.

I had mine out last May. Piece of cake. Good excuse to lay on the couch and watch a few of your favorite movies ;) Try not to worry about it too much, K?

Erika,

You sound like the kind of person I want working on my teeth. When can I get an appointment??? I'd drive to Chicago to find someone to treat me like a baby when I'm at the dentist!

geez, i should've mentioned that they DID give me all kinds of numbing stuff before pulling my teeth! :hammer: it's not like they went in and just started pulling permenents right and left with nothing :D i know no one said anything about that with my post, but i just remembered i should have mentioned that. but i could still feel the pressure of the pulling *shudder* God, that was 6 years ago and i can still imagine the whole thing...didn't really hurt, it was just pressure, but still...the thought of it! braces was actually more painful than getting teeth pulled! i know the worst part of my getting my teeth pulled was the changing of the bloody gauze, not being able to eat like i wanted to, and feeling like my mouth was 10 times its normal size! that's not at all meant to scare you...for one thing it was of course temporary...i was fine by the next day. also, it was something completely different than what you're having done! i'm sorry if it did scare you...in all honesty it wasn't that bad...just a pain in the at the time! but think about it...once they're gone, they're gone! and you won't have to go through it or worry about it ever again!

My daughter had hers pulled last summer, and did just fine. Her biggest complaint was the gauze pads, and the numbness. She had "twilight sleep"...it still cost over $1,000.

However, she had it done BEFORE any problems developed, and the teeth had only minor shifting and impaction, ie they came out straight and in one piece. Apparently, the older you are, the more complicated it can be.

I had to direct her to a few dental websites showing the affect of unremoved wisdom teeth before I could convince her to have it done. (She was 18 at the time, so I couldn't "force" her.)

It truly does depend from person to person on how "bad" it is. My mom had hers cut out when younger and my dad claims she thought she was dying on the couch. I on the other hand am a seasoned veteran of the oral surgeon.

To date:
Trip 1: 3 baby teeth pulled.
Trip 2: 7 baby teeth pulled.
Trip 3: 4 permanents (bi-cuspids I think) cut out.
Trip 4: 1 wisdom tooth cut out (went to WDW a week later)
Trip 5: 1 wisdom tooth cut/broken out. (thankfully the last two never formed as I don't have room)

All but the last trip, I was put under although each time took an additional amount of the happy juice to put me under. Leave it to a former red head to take additional anethesia (sp?).

If they offer you percodin/vicodin/Tylenol 3/4, take it as perscribed at least for the first day. If you start to feel pain, it is too late to take it and play catch up. I usually took about 1-2 doses of the heavy meds before switching to regular OTC meds.

For a touch of irony, my sister had to have two upper bridges put in because she didn't have enough teeth while I had to have them pulled because I didn't have enough room.
