I Like The Wand

It's been said before but I'll say it again. The wand makes the ball look smaller because it now has something to scale it against right next to it. It takes away the impressivness of the ball. Also the wand takes away from the original design and theme they were going for with Epcot.

The thing that really bothers me is how temporary it looks. You can tell it was put up for the millenium and then just left up after changing the "2000" to "Epcot". It looks OK from the parking lot and from the world showcase, but up close, you can see the scaffolding and the 2-D artwork. If SSE MUST have it, it should be a molded 3-Dimensinoal 360-degree structure.

You also have to wonder how much Disney actually likes it themselves. In many promotional pictures and media I see for Epcot, SSE does NOT have the wand on it.

I thought it was great for the Millennium celebration.
I think it's silly they kept it.
I think it looks horrible during the day, but pretty amazing at night.

But overall, I'm pretty "meh" about the whole keep it/tear it down debate. It could be worse. Just don't look up.

First, no one needs a sign to remind him where he is. Secondly, while I agree that the wand is actually pretty (not beautiful, but pretty) at night, it's hideous during the day...It overpowers the geosphere. Before the wand, SSE looked huge; now it doesn't look very impressive. (This is a similar effect that the 50th Anniversary figures had on the castle; the mirror and Peter Pan characters destroyed the forced perspective and made the castle look very small.)
[In reply to the bold print] The only place that you need a sign to reming you where you are is when you are in Charles de Gaulle Airport rather than Hell (more of a personal experience).

I only got to see SSE once before the sign went up and that was in '99. I don't remember it much, but if they were to take that sign down now SSE would just seem too plain. They should have taken it down after the Millenium Celebration. But agreeing with you, the wand looks trashy in the day, but looks alright during the night after ROE. (But I actually kind of liked the 50th on the castle).

well there's a pretty clear solution: only have Epcot open at night. It's prettier then anyway.

They made this beautiful geosphere that just made you go "WOW" and was the center point of the area and then slapped on an arm and wand and made it look "EWW".

Its like taking a BMW or Mercedes and slapping those spinning hubcaps on them. I mean "who in their right mind"?

I'm going to go with Laura's assertion in another wand thread that we put our opinions about the wand in our signature. That way a new wand thread doesn't pop up every 2 weeks...

This isn't meant as a bash to the OP...so don't take it that way.
i cant believe i missed another wand thread....... mines done. as for the thread;

*light fuse, get away*

It mades the ball much more "magical"

No offense, but if you want magic, why not just go to the Magic Kingdom. Magic is not what EPCOT is supposed to be about. It’s supposed to be about the wonders of the future and the wonders of the world around us.

I just don’t understand why Disney feels that ALL of the theme parks at WDW need to be about characters and generic “Disney” magic. :hurl: Why can’t each of the parks have it’s own unique theme – without the need to have Disney characters everywhere. Enough is enough.

Oh, and the wand needs to go – plain and simple.

Disney has built itself around the "magic" of all of their parks. Each park does indeed have it's own unique theme and that is what creates part of that magical feel. Disney is about "characters" and "magic", therefore we will see them in the parks.

Big ball and WAND discussions never get old around here, no matter how many times we have them, huh?
I'm sorry I even opened this thread... :hurl:

PS- I'm indifferent, but I tend to agree with the haters....

Me too, otherwise you could think youve just arrived at another I drive crazy golf imporium.

Millions of flies eat cow poo, your average visitor probably has no opinion about the wand, so whats your point caller?

Not shown affection as a child possibly, either that or attention seeking.
Pumbas Nakasak you are truly a renaisance man.
The Wand is not going anywhere anytime soon. I think that SSE is still a work of art. I liked it when it said 2000, and I like it now. So all of you Wand hatters I suggest, go to the Rose and Crown, purchase a Boddingtons Ale, and cry into it. By the way, most folks go to Disney Parks and want to see Disney Characters there. That's the reason you see so many at Epcot now.

Actually, that’s not what Disney used to be about – it’s only in the last decade or so that Disney has played up this whole “magic” and “characters” thing. Disney used to be about innovation and unique experiences that you couldn’t get anywhere else. But thanks to all the recent marketing campaigns people seem to think that all Disney does is magical characters.

When Walt was running Disneyland, the only places where cartoon-based character attractions existed was in Fantasyland. The Disney company was definitely not only about "characters" or "magic" back then.

By the way, most folks go to Disney Parks and want to see Disney Characters there. That's the reason you see so many at Epcot now.

There’s a difference between seeing Disney characters at the parks and seeing Disney characters EVERYWHERE at the parks. I have no problem with the costumed characters being in all the parks, or even in a few character shows. What I do have a problem with is all the attractions that seem to focus on Disney characters cropping up in places where they don’t really belong – like Future World. Same goes for that stupid wand – what exactly does Mickey’s hand have to do with Epcot again?????? Oh that's right ... nothing.

FYI

Steve has tried to do this...

But the person simply doesn't get the message...

People have been banned for less... :(

And as you are only the king of Big Ball and Wand,
I would appreciate not to interfere with the whereabouts of the all mighty Emperor of Noodle Kingdom...  :ROFLOL:

But seriously, I dont think the wand would have been a bad idea if the sphere was in MK but to take such a piece of art and thats what I think it was at its inception and then years later slap the wand on there, it just merely looks out of place now with its surroundings.

Me and a few others will see you on October 1st. Don't worry about Corrus' wand nightmare story. I have nightmares all the time. About turning the backlot tour at MGM into a car show. What.... they did? ARGH!

What.... it`s not called MGM anymore? ARRRGGHH!

Don`t tell me Horizons has gone too....
