Watch out for a lady who owns at least 2 dozen dictionaries!

LOL....I have one of those 25 pound dictionaries, and you are absolutely correct, Marcia. There's a usage note that it does refer specifically to Americans or those speaking English, but your etymology seems correct here. ;)

How about carring three, 1000 page books for school including binders, pens, calcs, and a couple more books for school. Your only supposed to carry 10% of your body weight but we carry more. Go figure.

My favorite English book is the dictionary.... I do own my share of them, and I have carried them too...!! (In English and in Spanish).
Honestly, I never thought about checking the meaning of the word in any of them cause I thought it wouldn´t be there. It surprises me to see that "The American Heritage College Dictionary" says it refers to the "griego" = greek in Spanish...

I can tell you what the vox populi is and what we believe that caused the starting of that name that we only use for americans and not in an offensive way, but in a very common way. We do know americans take it offensive sometimes, so some people like me, don´t call them that. At least, not in front of them... when you talk about them, it is easier to say that, than the whoooole word "norteamericanos"... see? ;-)

The story the majority of mexicans know is: when the mexicans and americans were fighting for the borders, the mexican army would hear the americans say to themselves: "green goes, green goes", referring to the mexicans running, but the mexicans thought the americans were calling each other.... so they heard "gringos".

And that is my story! :p Believe me or not..... it doesn´t really matter, I´m just telling the common story...

Thanks, I'm a teacher.... the teacher's editions are bigger than yours, and I have to carry around piles of essays, etc. It's not like you're the only one...

I have to say I like Maria's version better LOL
To get back to the subject of the YANKEES they are probably the only team in the UK that any of us know about so I think that may mean they out run the bobby socks any day!
If any of you guys (or Gals ) ever come to Liverpool England I'm sure MarkyMark and I could take you to see a real Ball game.!!!!

Bobby socks is appropriate.....the little girls don't have the talent to win the World Championship ever since they dumped Babe Ruth...

I would LOVE to make a trip to Liverpool to watch you bat MarkyMark's balls around...will you dress in leather while you do it? Now that's a REAL ball game!
