The world calls America yankees

Nothing against being a yankee but what about if you live near Boston.

PS-I live 2 hours away from Boston-5 from NYC and i'm a BIG red sox fan so probably red sox fans can relate to this.

Dear WDW...

I see in your profile that your a history buff....so I have to assume you're just pulling our leg...

"Yankee" has it's origins from the song "Yankee Doodle"... The song first appeared during the French and Indian War, sung by British troops to poke fun at the bumpkin nature of their American cousins. During some of the battles of the American Revolution, the British played the song to mock the tattered colonists. The colonials despised the song until it was transformed from a song of insult into America's most stirring anthem of defiance and victory. Thus, Americans have been called "Yanks" ever since.

...but you knew all this, right? Now here's a quiz for YOU...why did they call it "New England?'"

I don't suppose any of you would be surprised to learn I have a dictionary of Etymology, and it states.."n. 1849, borrowed from Mexican Spanish gringo (foreigner), from Spanish gringo (foreign), unintelligible talk, gibberish, of uncertain origin (perhaps ultimately from griego Greek, from Latin Graecus, from Greek Graikos)" Now aren't you sorry you asked? ;)

No, I am not sorry I asked because that is not the answer I was looking for. ;) Which dictionary do you have?? ;) Mexicans only call gringos to the americans, therefore, the word can´t be applied to any "foreigner" but for an american. It does have an uncertain origin, but it is definately NOT greek or latin... it is a lot simpler than that and it comes from the English language.

Someone else wants to take a guess? ;)

Barnhart Dictionary of Etymology. Also, Webster's 7TH Collegiate "a foreigner, esp in Spain or Latin America esp. when of English or American origin-often used disparagingly." It also traces it's origin to Greek -stranger. Webster's New International Dictionary also has a similar etymology. I could go on, but you get the picture! You made the mistake of asking me for the ORIGIN of the word, which may or may not be the same as a "slang" or contemporary usage...i.e. sometimes cool just means you're chilly! I'm sure I've given you more information than you wanted! ;)
