Yesterday was a whirlwind day. In fact, this whole week has been a little crazy. This will be sort of a Pre-Pre Trip Report and I will post a full, detailed one later. This may provide a little insight into the crazy life of a freelance performer, and I promise it will get around to the Disney stuff eventually. Also, it's super wordy so I am going to post it in two parts.
Let's back up to February. Shortly after we returned from our last trip we booked another Swolphin Sandwich trip using both airline and hotel points for July. Yes, JULY. These ex-Floridian heat-haters were ready to go in July because the July 4 holiday made it a little easier for M to get away from work. We were planning on having a very chill trip with just a bit of park time, some nice, relaxing dinners, and no early mornings. We would have stayed at the Dolphin first for two nights, driven to Jacksonville to see the fam for three nights, then driven back for one last night at the Dolphin before flying home. We booked two of the four flight segments with Southwest points, and the last night at the Dolphin with Starpoints.
About a month after we got back I learned of an audition for a show--a musical, not an opera!--that I've been kind of obsessed with for awhile but just haven't had the opportunity to perform. The rehearsals would have conflicted with the July trip, but I auditioned anyway, because a) the audition procedures for opera vs. theatre are quite different and I wanted more experience auditioning for a musical, and b) all the reservations were refundable and/or changeable, JUST IN CASE I actually got the show. The callbacks were scheduled for April 7 (Saturday)-remember this date later.
Last week at my school we had just a little DRAMMA with the end-of-year vocal/piano recital date. It had already been moved one weekend earlier, which kind of sucked because the kids would get one fewer lesson in preparation for the recital. THEN last week the school owner asked if we could move it up ANOTHER weekend, because the new weekend was Memorial Day weekend and lots of students would be out of town. I had to reschedule a totally unrelated audition (this time for opera) but I was able to make it work. The school doesn't continue vocal/piano lessons after the recital because most students wouldn't come anyway, so this means my last day working at the school will be May 19 (until the summer session in August).
On Tuesday, I applied for another-completely unrelated to all these other auditions-audition. This time it was for an opera training program. Yes, I am still in training even though I have a Master's degree and have been working professionally for five years.
This particular program is doing an opera with one of my dream roles, one that I'd really like to get on my resume because other companies are much more likely to hire me for this role if I'd already performed it somewhere else. On Wednesday, the director of the program emailed me back to say that I didn't need to audition, because they had visited my website and listened to the recordings I have there, and determined that I would be a great fit for the role I wanted, and that they really wanted to work with me. BUT (and isn't there always a BUT???) they had three spots available for the role, and they had already filled two, and had offered the third to another soprano, who hadn't yet accepted. So now, I am on the waiting list in case A) the third soprano doesn't accept, or B) she does accept but they are able to open up a fourth spot.
Remember that I was hoping for a callback on April 7? Well, all of last week I was hoping I'd get a call or email asking me to come in for a callback. While the role I was going for doesn't have a lot of dance/movement, it does have some extreme high singing (for a musical) so I figured at callbacks they might want to test my range and hear some more high notes. All of last week I was "sitting by the phone" so to speak, but by Friday (April 6) I figured, correctly, that I would not be asked for a callback.
So, I moved on mentally, and rejoiced in the fact that we would be able to do the Disney trip as planned!
BUT THEN.
