I feel your pain (well, at least two weeks ago I did when I had a bad cold). Let's see, searches swiss-cheese brain for cold information...
Some people I know firmly believe in the zinc lozenges. Problem is, they work best when you first start feeling symptoms. Sounds like you're way past that.
Someone I work with swears by garlic tea. When she gets sick she drinks at least three cups a day, and she says she's over being sick in half the time. Maybe because everyone else who may be sick doesn't want to get close to her.
Also know people who do the vitamin C treatment, taking massive dosages of vitamin C when they get sick. I've tried that myself, and never saw a difference in the reduction of symptoms.
Knew a guy back in California who went to the suana when he got sick. He said he could "sweat it out" in two to three days.
As far as real science goes, a virus does not like a warm, wet environment. Our bodies do natural things to make the virus less welcome: raise temperature and produce mucus. Unfortunately, to make the symptoms more bearable, we take medicines to undo what the body is trying to do. Our family doctor told us the key things are to stay warm, treat for fever with ibuprofen, and take decongestant to lower the risk of sinus infection. He said to avoid antihistamines if possible.
And, oh yes...drink lots of fluids and get plenty of rest. HA! Like any of us have time for that.
