Maybe it's a sign that our society, instead of evolving into a pinnacle of enlightened thinkers, is instead degenerating into a pack of thrill seeking neanderthals. You be the judge.

And while World of Motion may have been the most hilarious and detailed, Imagination may have been the most loveable, Kitchen Kabaret being the most clever, and Spaceship Earth the most dramatic, Horizons was the perfect blend.

Horizons was EPCOT. It was Walt Disney. A trip through the future (which could have been updated) while also looking at comedic visions of the past - and the cutting edge of science today (the Omnisphere). Sure, perhaps the vision of the future was outdated in 1997. So that means it should have been closed? Naw. I just say refurbish the whole thing. But don't lose the spririt.

It was the story of mankind and all progress. "If we can dream it, we can do it," we heard several times through Horizons. We heard it a lot - from Walt Disney, the man himself.

Mission Space is a good ride. But I think that's all it is - a good good ride. But it lacks. It lacks in heart (Horizons had the spirit of family, you got attached to it), which can be brought out by character, song, and score. And while the technology is amazing. . . well, that doesn't "wow" me. Horizons was quality. That was something to "wow" about. We saw it. It was ours. For fifteen (or more) minutes each trip.

Mission Space also lacks in theme. Yes, space flight. But where's that thread that we're given? It's more indirect. So yeah, we land in Mars, it's over. We go out to send email cards. Ride it again. Where's our "Dream it and do it!"? It just lacks, that's all. Not to mention small pavilion.

Horizons is one of the most well-beloved Disney attractions. Some people know it as the "orange" attraction, others as the "choose your own ending". But in any case, people still love it, grasping the few Walt Disney World Forever or Official Album tracks which are no longer available. And the home movies. And once the technology of Mission Space is outdated, will people keep going back because they're in love with the attraction? Maybe. But I feel as though Horizons had that power that Mission Space could never gain.

Even when I listen to the soundtracks, I just sigh, "I can't believe it's gone." It's unbelievable. Because Horizons WAS Horizons. It's grown to be a part of us.

Horizons will always live on so long as there is progress and imagination. Good job, MSU.

Phew! reading you're post just about wore me out, grizz! it was so long! :animwink: but also so true! too true!

as usual, i couldn't agree more with you! i was never a super huge fan of Horizons, but at the same time, i couldn't help but love it. Epcot was meant to be an inspiration of the future, and Horizons was just that...it inspired us to believe that our dreams are attainable, that we could do anything if we dreamed about it, and that our lifestyles in the furture are limitless. you exited the ride feeling like you could make a difference in the world.
and Horizons WAS Walt Disney...a little idealist, yes, but that was what made Walt an incredible person. he believed in a future full of good, he believed imagination could take a person anywhere. and just believeing in that made the world a little better. how will the future be if we don't show and teach our children the same qualities? how will they learn that they can make a difference in the world? what kind of hopes and dreams will be sparked in them if all they have is thrill ride afer thrill ride? some may say 'that's what schools are for'...well, i don't know about any other schools, but they don't instill those qualities in kids in the schools i attended. all my schools were worried about was getting the money they thought they 'deserved' and getting us ready for the state-wide, end-of-the-year tests.
Horizons represented a bright future, full of hope. and while that future might have never come to pass (but, whose to say it never will? that's why i don't get why it was outdated....was the concept outdated of the ride system itself?) it still represented our hopes for the future...and it still held the message of 'if you can dream it, then you can do it.'
and while M:S may be entertaining, what do you get from it after it's over (other than :hurl: )
yes, nostalgia and sentimental reasons may be laced into the arguments of why Horizons should have been left (and that goes for me too, because i'm a nostalgic and sentimental person) but is that not what makes a ride a classic? Horizons had all the qualities of a classic attraction, but still it was considered outdated. so what's keeping the other classics alive? what WILL keep them alive? what will happen to HM and PotC 30, 40, 50 years down the road? will we consider them outdated too? yes, i know Walt wanted to keep up with the times, and i know that it's nessasary even. but that doesn't mean that tearing out a meaningful attraction all together is going to solve anything. to me, it seems as though Disney took the easy way out...but that's a different thread.

Think about it. The theme songs we claim to love so much actually played VERY LITTLE inside the attractions. "Listen to the Land" could only be heard the first 15 seconds of the ride. Same with "If You Can Dream It" on Horizons. "Tomorrow's Child" played during the last 45 seconds of so of Spaceship Earth.

No, I never had any Official Albums. I only got to listen to those songs at home about 2 or 3 years ago, and my first trip to WDW was in 1990. Back then, I didn't have enough English to thouroughly understand all the story being told, and when we got home and we'd be telling people: "Oh, they have this great attraction, remember, the one with this song" and the humming and wistling started.
So I pretty much think your claims are messed up. As I said I'm yet to ride Space, and even though I know for sure, as Zac said, that Disney managed to accomplish, ie. building a state-of-the-art thrill ride, I'm still more excited about PhilharMagic. You won't see me going into Test Track again, one time was enough, and I'm not even comparing it to WoM. I'd take Spaceship Earth over that any day of the week.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. As soon as they tear down Spaceship Earth it'll be one less ticket for me to buy at WDW.

great point! it's not that we've heard these songs over and over again on soundtracks, it's that they have a certain something to them that makes them stick with us. just like in Mary Poppins or The Lion King...you're still singing (or humming, as the case may be) the songs after your first time seeing them. that's what makes a theme song special, and that's what makes an attraction more personalized.

for me, i'll still go to Epcot after SSE is gone...but FW is a different story. i may go long enough to ride TT, but after that, Epcot will be only WS to me. which is truly sad.

You wanna talk about songs getting stuck in your head.

This morning I was listening to Tapestry of Dreams (NOT ONE WORD! I LIKE THIS ONE THE BEST!) then like the entire day while I was teaching, just for no reason I would being doing the beats for it. Aggrivatted the class because they were taking a test but hey, screw em.

I've got a lot of songs that are stuck in my head (Indiana Jones mostly) but ToD is just one that I don't care what Im doing, for no reason Ill just start doing the beats.

I swear I start doing that while Im sleeping too.

It pretty much went the length of the ride, with several variations. And don't forget, what's the top complaint from It's a Small World? That's right....that theme that you can't get out of your head.

When I visited EPCOT in the 6th grade in 95-96 we rode the original JII and that song was all we kept singing the rest of the day  ...even after like a week or month after the trip I'd sing to my friends "Imagination..." and they'd start laughing...so that's another one that can get stuck in people's heads

The theme music is mostly played outside in the Plaza. But that is instrumental.

Be more careful about how you respond to people in your posts. Your first sentence there is pretty rude, and it implies that I don't know what I'm talking about.

I know there is music in Mission: Space. My point was that it is hardly noticable and that music SHOULD practically be the center of a well themed and immersive experience. It's pretty clear that the score is secondary in M:S's case.

Your comment about NASA not playing music for what they do has absolutley nothing to do with M:S. What NASA does is serious stuff. It's not for entertainment.

Oh yes! The original "One Little Spark" song is one of WDW's greatest of all time. I still sing that song when I'm at Epcot! They still play an instrumental version of the original around the front gate, and also over in the JII area.:)

Yet the whole fact that M:S is as close to the real deal that you can yet.

True M:S is for entertainment but it's supposed to be as realistic as it can be while still being safe for guests. But at the same time, music doesnt really have an effect to the ride.

And if you want to go further on the fact of no music in attractions, attack things like Kilimonjaro Safari, Primeval Whirl, Sounds Dangerous, Backlot Tour. So really, music doesnt make a bit of difference.

As far as your comments about barely being able to hear the music at ISTC. It must varie with different people. Hell, I can be over by the restrooms next to Test Track and still be able to hear the music in the Plaza at ISTC, and thats over the cars at TT, people talking, the monorails. With Destiny, I hear that beauty before I even get step foot out of the trainer. You've got to remember, small corridors, packed with people talking about how great it was/feeling faint, ect. That can make the music sound a softer than what it is.

But whatever. Im not going to get into an argument over something stupid like music being the key to an attraction or it being too soft.

And to think THIS was gone too! If it weren't for a million guests+ complaining, we would have this one gone. The fact is we are losing memorable songs. I'd be interested to see if people will be humming Veggie Fruit Fruit from exciting the new Kitchen Karnavale exhibit!

MKCustodial (thanks for the point!), MSU, Disney_Phreek (haha thanks for reading the posts!) - I completley agree.

On the fact that there should be no music. . . how do you explain Walt Disney's Enchanted Tiki Room? Does that not have singing birds? Or even the Worlds Fair Attractions - - especially Carousel of Progress.

Music is a necessity. . . Walt loved it. But not regular background music - SONG. Song is what it takes. . . a TRULY poetic piece that captures the essence of the park with a unique tune. "Destiny," to me, has a whole modern flair with simple slapped lyrics and lousy instrumentals. It sounds like something I'd hear on hold for a phone. It cannot capture the HEART of New Horizons. That masterpiece just causes chills. Again, this is all my opinion.

"Walt Disney understood that a song is what people carry away with them. People can go to a Disney picture or park and be enchanted by it, but when they go home, the song is what they keep.” - Robert Sherman

I'd like to see how many people whistle Destiny out of Mission: Space. That'd be interesting. :lookaroun

It's funny. You continue to compare apples to oranges to support what you're saying.

But, since you brought up Kilimanjaro, there is music, and it's the best part of the Safari.

If you can't see the importance of music, then you can continue to disagree with most and be wrong on the issue. You did, however, get one thing right:

"Whatever."

Why should I spend any more of my time trying to explain myself to someone who consistantly (throughout the entire forum) goes on the defensive, and fails to carefully read and understand people's posts before responding harshly. Not to mention pretending like you know everything about everything.

Good day.

.........................

Aaaaaaaaaand....BAM! Back on topic! :)

I saw someone mention earlier, the smell of the Orange Grove scene. This is something I would also like to see used more often in attractions, in places where it isn't used as a joke. (ie 3d movies)

I'm looking forward to Soarin for this reason. They use it wonderfully in the California version, so I'm assuming it will be used just the same in Epcot's.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAND

Speakin' of Soarin...I wonder how many people while be whistling THAT score out. I don't like it, personally, based on the soundtrack, although I know a lot do. But I seriously think I'd be pulled to tears to hear a brand new version of the show with a dramatic "Listen to the Land" theme to it. That would be good. . . .with the loranges.

I also hope the show EVENTUALLY will tie in with symbiosis. If it doesn't, they might as well knock that plaque off the front entrance.

(Don't get any ideas, Disney! )

Have it on tape?

Every so often I get a dim memory of Horizons from a post, but for months now I have been whishing I could see a tape from inside Horizons. I have read of other rides being taped. Does someone have a video, and how could I see it?

Grizz & MSU -
re: the music of attractions - you both took the words right out of my mouth.
When a truly good song is written for a ride or attraction (and not just as background music), that song is a character on that ride or attraction just as much as the animatronics (remember them?)or big drops are.

Langdonj:
There are lots of ride videos and songs available, and to get you started on accessing them, check out this post:

Is there some sort of organized cataloging of rides project anywhere? I'd love to find a video ridethrough of IYHW...
