The Hat is Practical though...

Just from a logistical point, the hat makes a hell of a "Meet you at 3pm at the insert large landmark here." Sort of like the castle, Spaceship Earth or Tree of Life do.

What killed it for me was having ithe hat blocked off last August so that a bunch of 20-somethings pretending to be teenagers could parade loudly down the street and hold an obnoxious pep rally right in front of it that you could not avoid hearing from anywhere in the whole park...but who's complaining...

P.S. Did I hear someone was bringing beer?:animwink:

Yeah, DHS really needed an icon. The Earful tower was OK, but you couldn't really see it unless you took the Backlot Tour. I like it, since it is official icon now I seriously doubt that they will EVER remove it!

:lol: YES I was there that day. I accidentally forced my DH to go with me and on the way up on the Tram, one of the kids puked in the seat. Thankfully it was the section way behind us but we could still hear the shrieks of dismay and disgust! :ROFLOL:I knew if my morning was going to start with random vomit the rest of the day didn't bode well.....

PS - I've got the chips and salsa..what kind of beer? Is it a dark beer...? :slurp:

Is it that new beer with lime in it? I've been wondering what that tastes like...

The Miller version Chilata or whatever its called, is actually not to bad. Haven't had the Bud yet, but I was told its disgusting. As for me......I'll stick with my Guiness and New Cassies.

I guess it really doesn't matter as long as theres good beer. :)

So true! :sohappy:

One of the more entertaining bits of people-watching that I do in EPCOT is to sit in the Rose & Crown and watch people come in wanting an American beer and having Stella suggested as their only option.

Meh, the hat is ok, but a bit obtrusive. It wouldn't have been my first choice for a centerpiece icon. The saddest thing about it is that there's nothing under it but a modest little gift shop. Which is ironic, a statmenet of how MGM was as a park when it was built: pretty modest compared to the others.

I prefer what they are doing with DCA. They are making the Carthay Circle theater their centerpiece!

Here's the thing:
The wand was NOT the icon of Epcot
The Hat IS the icon of Hollywood Studios.
Therefore, the wand MAY move but the hat MAY NOT.

However, if the pattern keeps up, DHS/MGM will need another new icon in about...five years or so. It took them 12 years (1989-2001) to change from the Earfel tower to the Hat. By 2013, another 12 years will have passed and it will be time to change icons again. Hmm...

All kidding aside, I don't mind it. It's not the best icon the park could have, and it could look a little less...plastic. Would it be nice to see the theater from a distance again? Sure, but its not a deal breaker for me.

Hey, DHS turns 20 in 2009 (as do I! :shudder:) so maybe they'll remove it in time for the park's anniversary celebration, if one were to occur. If DAK could celebrate its 10th a little bit, DHS can celebrate its 20th I suppose. We'll see.

Ramblefest over; time to sleep.

But wasn't the theatre originally the icon for the Studios? Do you mean because they use the hat for advertising?

Personally I don't mind the look of the hat I just wish it didn't block the theatre. I used to love walking into the studios and feeling like you were in 1930's Hollywood and seeing the theatre in the distance. To me the theatre had a subtle romance of the movies, a sense of adventure within and gave the feeling of being transported to Hollywood which, now with the name change, should be the feeling you get when you enter. Not the feeling of, "Hey, I feel like I'm in Old Hollywood...no...wait...feelings gone because there's a great big giant blue sparkly oh so present, look-at-me, look-at-me huge a$$ hat in my way and underneath is a bunch of pins...no...definately not in old Hollywood...I'm in tourist trap central"

The hat
-is big enough to be seen from various places around the park, to be used as a navigational tool/meeting place

-Represents "Disney" more specifically than the Chinese Theater

-Was built to address the confusion around what truly was the icon of the park (was it the earful tower? The chinese theater? The Tower of Terror?)

-and, as was a rumor for a while, the folks who owned the Chinese Theater didn't want their theater being used as a centerpiece for the park, or in the park's advertisements (I don't think this is true though...)

I believe that's their reasoning for building the hat.

Nope, the Earful Tower (aka The Mickey Water Tower) was the original icon of the park. The theater served as the weenie at the end of Hollywood Blvd. Hence the confusion, some people thought the theater was the icon, some thought the Earful Tower, still others thought TOT was the icon. When the 100 Years of Magic Celebration started Disney built the BAH to serve as the centerpiece of the celebration inending for it to remain and become the new icon and weenie of DHS. Once the celebration ended the BAH officially became the park icon and weenie all in one.

After several pints the hat actually looks great!

On a side note: Anything with flavored with fruits such as lemons and limes is most assuredly not beer.
