but due to budget constraints I may have to switch hotels the next time I go. Do you think that my family would be disappointed or would they enjoy the Swan?

Ummm...if you are having to ditch the Beach Club because of budget contraints, then you shouldn't be looking at the Swan. I think that one is higher priced than the Grand Floridian.

Not to be rude, but the hotel is always my last concern on vacation. I wouldn't worry about people being dissappointed. They probably care a lot less than you think. With that said, some of the mods are REALLY nice. POR and POFQ always get great reviews. You should look into those.

I think your family will enjoy the Swan...it's just a few hotels away, so you can still enjoy the proximity to Epcot/MGM and the Boardwalk. It has some good restaurants and a great pool. It can get a bit swamped with conventions (at times) but it's still a beautiful hotel. And, it is NOT more expensive than the Grand Floridian - not even close. You can get some good rates ($139) and teacher's rates as well. It's also owned by Westin so it has the great beds and no smoking anywhere on property!

I'd say go for it!

It's generally less expensive, and, as mentioned, they often have specials with lower rates.

We've stayed there, and were quite happy. The only drawback is that many of the rooms do not have a balcony/patio, which I miss. It's also a long walk to the "fancier" pool over near the Dolphin.

I prefer POFQ or Caribean Beach over the Swan. The pools are not the same as the Beach Club, but they are fun and festive places to stay.

Give them a look. They're also closer (IMO) to the parks and have better bus service.

Am I thinking of the Dolphin, then, or are they both just alot cheaper than I thought?

Okay, here's where I got my info, which must be outdated or something. I'm looking on page 64 of the Biernbaum 2006 WDW Guide.

For the Swan and Dolphin at value season, here are the rates it gives: regular rooms-$339-$375, compared to $305-370 for the Yacht and Beach Clubs. Club Level Rooms: $459, compared to Club Level Rooms at the Yacht and Beach Clubs for $435-$500. Swan and Dolphin, as of that book, also had suites for $639 at value season.

For peak season, the comparison was as follows:

Swan and Dolphin: regular rooms-$379-$445, compared to $415-485
Club Level Rooms:$495 for Swan and Dolphin compared to $565-$635 for Yacht and Beach Club

I found it odd that in the one season, it looks like Swan and Dolphin was higher priced, and in the other season, it was lower priced than the Yacht and Beach Club.

Those might be the regular rates but they always have specials going on. Just last month they had rooms in Aug/Sep for $125 a night!

I've stayed there several times (attending a conference for work) and have always enjoyed it there. True, it may not be quite as good as other Disney owned hotels but there are many benefits to staying there. Price for one (lots of discounts offered) and location for another -- it's right beside the boardwalk. I think you'll enjoy it -- good luck!

I don't think that your family will be disappointed with the Swan or Dolphin. The rooms are comparable if not better and you also get the Westin "Heavenly Beds" which from what I hear are simply divine. Since you are a teacher, you are going to get an excellent rate on the room. I would book a room with a balcony, though, because that might be something you miss from the Beach Club. I hate not having a balcony. Some people have said that their room is their last concern. But it sounds like you're like my family, and our room is one of our top priorities. The resort sets the tone for our whole vacation and we like to spend a lot of time enjoying our resort and especially the balcony and view. And you can get some spectacular views at the Swan and Dolphin! If you go to my website (listed in my signature) and click on January 1993, you'll see the view from our room at the Dolphin. We could see Illuminations every night from our window!

i would call but i believe that on allears. there is an ad for $129 a night at the swan...could be wrong but it won't hurt to call and ask or call a travel agent and ask. i've only been through the lobby at the swan and it looks really nice, plus it's in the same proximity to everything that the bc is.

good luck!

if i'm a teacher ... and if I'm correct they have a teachers' rate of $149 a night.

Do you have to be a teacher in the US, or can any teacher (with proof, of course) get this rate?

I am graduating my my B.Ed next spring, and am starting to think about a grad trip just for me. I pay membership dues to our local teacher's society and have a membership card that certifies me as a teacher.

I would think that any teacher could get the rates, but the best thing to do would be to call.

The reason why I'd book Swan or Dolphin is because I would have 5 in my party and I know that the mods usually only can fit 4 to a room. Plus, and I hope that i'm correct), Swan and Dolphin get to particpate in EMH while the mods and values don't. Is that right?

On a side note, I'm from the part of NJ that the BC and BW are modeled after..and it scared us the first time we went there because it was so close to home, though the BW is like what many of our Jersey shore boards were like 50+ years ago ( I remeber the tail end of that era, my kids obviously don't). My kids didn't even want to set foot in the building..lol Even the gate security guard at the resort was from one town south of where I live and graduated from the HS I teach at! lol She was shocked when she saw my drivers' license! It truly is a small world.

When the captain at the door said "welcome home" we said "You don't know how true that is!' lol

My kids also thought that the hallways of the BC looked like the first class deck of Titanic..lol. But, they love Titanic so that won them over. Btw, if you are a Titanic buff, the Titanic Experience in Orlando is great!

I don't know why we love that resort so much..:)

I know most people disagree with me, but I have enjoyed my stays at the value resorts more than my one stay at the Swan. I just like the whole Disney-owned property experience, and the Swan felt too..normal! Just a thought.
