Hurricane Matthew

I don't forsee any parks opening today. Disney will be getting their resorts back up to full running first. There are guests who need to be fed. It takes time to get the parks back up. Every trash can and temporary cart or structure was moved indoors. All structures have to be checked for damage. Plus there will be clean up. In Universal's case they are going to have to put back up alot of HHN structures, sets and props. A lot of that can't be done with guests in the park.

Not to mention, a lot of CMs who may be home dealing with cleaning up their own property and getting things back in order.

People need to stop critizing state/local officials AND Disney for anticipating and planning for a disaster.

Emergency management staff have regular workshops and drills to make sure they can handle anything. Think of the millions of people who live along Florida's coasts. If you were here in 2004/2005, remember all those people trapped on I-75 while storms criss crossed Florida. A nightmare. And a friend of mine was in one of those cars. She told me how terrified she was as she watched a tornado at some distance..and prayed it wasn't going to head for them.

And for those of you who survived Andrew, remember the confusion and chaos after the storm. When the City Manager got on TV and begged someone to help them.

Yeah, The Weather Channel plays it up..all broadcast TV does, that's how they get revenue...advertising rates based on eyeballs viewing. I find it mostly intertaining. BTW, the poster who commenting about which TV station owns NHC, it's NOAA, as in the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, i.e., US!

So if the governor gets on TV and makes it sound like doomsday, I'll give him a break. Because it could be. And the daggers will be out for any government not prepared.

Upset? That the hurricane didn't come on shore? That they didn't have any major property damage? That nobody died?
Seriously?
I suspect there will be a lot of grateful and thankful people.

No one should be upset. Everyone should be grateful and thrilled.
Plenty of people will have a brief feeling of being, yes, a little annoyed. That's normal.

Not annoyed that you don't get hit.. Just a brief though of "ugh, what am I going to do with all of these supplies". Or "ugh, now I have to hurry and find a flight back, or drive home", etc. ..and at the same time be so glad and thankful that they are feeling a bit annoyed instead of dealing with the nasty aftermath of a hurricane.

There's a lot of emotions during these times, but anger at not being hit shouldn't be one of them!

To prepare for the worst, and nothing happened in Orlando, again Orlando.

The storm hasn't even cleared Florida yet, people are without power, maybe worse, and you're making a statement like this?
Maybe those who are upset that nothing happened should go to Haiti where HUNDREDS lost their lives due to this storm. Then maybe they'll be a little more appreciative of the fact that "nothing happened in Orlando".

I can't wait until people of Orlando start getting interviewed on the news. I suspect a lot of upset people.
Someone, somewhere in Orlando unfortunately will be upset because they only look after their selfish wants/needs rather than the big picture. The bullet that was Matthew was dodged in the Orlando area which people should be grateful for. Unfortunately, I wouldn't be shocked if the news outlets interviewed tourists who may be upset because "wah, Disney and the other theme parks overreacted by closing and now I lost a day of my vacation wah" or the local that says "I didn't listen because it was all hype etc."

WOW! Just wow!

This has to be one of the most insensitive and callous things I've read on here in a while.

Technically it's reedy creek so they govern their own "laws" if you are traveling on the roads due to work you won't be arrested. So cast can come and go.
The Reedy Creek Improvement District only supersedes the counties on certain issues such as Zoning and the Building Code. Even then, people have to travel through other jurisdictions.

Perhaps, but honestly, I think that will be a minuscule minority. I do have more faith in my fellow humans than that.

As a local here in the Orlando area near the parks (Dr. Phillips) I feel very lucky it did nothing more in this area than it has already done.

Hurricanes are NOT fun and should always be taken very seriously. Being a Floridian born & raised, I have been through a dozen or so Hurricanes in my brief 39 years. 13 hit or came very close to hitting Pensacola when I lived there with, Frederic, Elena, Juan, Alberto, Erin, Opal, Danny, Helene, Barry, Hanna, Ivan, Arlene, Dennis & Ida.

Some VERY devastating storms in Pensacola, Florida where I have personally lost my home. That is no where near fun at any time. Over preparing and expecting the worst are always the best course or action. I actual applaud Orlando & surrounding areas for doing a good job on getting people to take this seriously & be ready for anything.

For some it's all about when will this or that be back open. You have to remember, damages from storms go deeper than what you can actually see. It takes time to assess any damages, no matter how marginal it may appear, to make certain it is safe for both employees & guests to return.

Yeah, Reedy Creek is like a water management district. They have no law enforcement powers. You would still be in danger of being arrested by OCSO. But I would imagine once the storm clears later today, Orange County will reassess the need for a curfew lasting until tomorrow morning.

There is a huge difference in the risk in Haiti then the risk in any US city. The infrastructure alone is the cause of more danger there. You can't even compare the two and get a serious conversation. Not to say there isn't dangers, but it is foolish to compare Haiti to Orlando.

My issue is not with the preparation, evacuations, or the news acting like we are all going to die. It's disney charging $13 for a box lunch that costs them $2 or less. It's ok to charge prices like that in a theme park, or any normal day at the resort, but to have everyone confined to the resort because of an emergency and price gouge them 500% plus is unacceptable. That is more mark up than the $5.99 gas. I wonder how many people bought 3 of those per person for a family of 4. That is a lot of money for some people, and now they wake up and they are serving breakfast. So many $13 lunches going to the trash.

The news could just say, great, we got lucky here in Orlando, better safe than sorry. Instead they find the one tree down in a 30 mile radius and broadcast more fear.

A welcome voice of reason. We are headed down Sunday for Fall Break. I am grateful as many are as ok as they are, and sad that too many have lost a lot. The only thing I can do is leave behind my $$$. :)

..mudslides, tin roofs, etc.
That country is the worst kind of extreme poverty. It's why their natural disasters are so much worse than ours will ever be.

You are absolutely correct that there is no comparison. People on these boards like to throw something out though.. Not that poster in particular, but ones who have insinuated that we should somehow not be happy about our situation because of Haiti's.

Really that can apply to anything.. Is someone going to skip a meal tonight because another human is starving?

Help Haiti, donate money, donate your time if possible. The people in that country risk their lives to make it on a raft here for a reason.. They live in horrid conditions on a daily basis.

Please, don't belittle people because they aren't comparing their life in America to life in Haiti. I'll never understand why on the internet it has to be one thought or the other, as if our brains and hearts can't think/feel several things at the same time.
