Hurricane Matthew

Doing fine. Power is still on and the hose is still intact.

The worst is still on its way, but I am about 12 miles from the beach and not in a flood zone so my only worry is a tree coming down. Given that we have had about 8" of rain in the last week, that is a real possibility.
Has anyone heard from @The Mom? She lives up that way too.

Once again.... another bogus "catastrophe" brewed up by TV stations, bloggers and radio dying for ratings.... Even the FLA governor looks like an A$$ at this morning's press conference.

When you're the leader, you don't have to follow.
I understand that. For South Floridians (Especially east of 95) though, ones who have lived through Andrew and beyond, when you evacuated west you STILL didn't have power, or water, and with the gas lines and restrictions some were not even able to get home. Call it jaded, but if you have the choice of being in your own home without those amenities, or in a cheap motel out west, bc it was the only room available, also without those amenities, then it really does become a weighing of "which is worse".
OR- you can evacuate to your friend or family's house a little north, and then the storm changes path and misses your home but hits where you evacuated to.. Now you are worse off.
Cough, cough, the evacuees at my house during Wilma.

Again, I think the new laws, new structural changes, new lines and readiness from FPL, all of that will prevent such a large scale of madness in the future. :). I don't think we will ever see a county with over 90% power outages, for weeks on end, again.

Bottom line- Hurricanes are annoying.lol
Did you really just say that hurricanes are "annoying", and then LOL'd?

You've outdone yourself lady. This is the single most asinine post in this entire thread. Ask the hundreds of dead Haitians how "annoyed" they are today. Unbelievable.

This is the kind of foolishness that can cost lives. I don't know your specific situation, but assuming you're safe doesn't mean you get to wear an "I survived a Category 4 storm" badge. You didn't. Best case, you dodged a bullet and you should be grateful for that. The point of all the hype, and yes, the media stirs it up big time, is to warn people about what could happen. If Matthew had shifted further west overnight, you might very well have found yourself in a situation where you'd be calling 911 instead of using your precious data to post snarky comments.

The point being, if officials wait until there is more certainty in the forecast, it's too late, and people pay for it with their lives. You don't just evacuate millions of people in 6 hours. I suggest you count your blessings rather than dump on the government/media for crying wolf.

I think they had to. I had a long conversation about this last night when it looked as though it wouldn't be anything major.. There is just no way to predict what will happen. Plenty of people are mad that they left their homes.. but what if it would have hit, and Rick Scott wouldn't have been so full of warnings as he was? He would have been blamed for failing his state.
The only correct thing to do is to prepare.

I am the first one to say that the TWC people definitely over dramatize the majority of the time, we can do without their crazy planted stance like they are about to get blown away (when the tree behind has at best a palm frond lightly swaying), but I do think we need to listen to the warnings, just not over react to them.

Yeah that's why I called it the $5.99 shell lol

I guess they get away with it cause that's there price year round and normally people have other options

I just can't believe ppl buy gas there. How do they stay in business? There is a 7-11 and a Mobil station nearby.

Lol to a certain extent. It depends on where you live. As others have said, the coast of Florida is still in emergency. But inland areas, Orlando, Kissimmee, sanford, we have experienced nothing. I have been sitting on my balcony off and on since 6am and besides heavy wind, i have seen nothing severe. I am from Chicago, so i know bad weather. What i have seen here is nothing.

It is all about sensationalism. 24 hours ago, we were preparing for the end of the world.

How many have you lived through?
My heart breaks for Haiti, and for all the Caribbean that was battered and devastated by the storm.
My heart is full of JOY that Florida was spared.

The 2 are not mutually exclusive.
I do not feel at all ashamed that I am happy that my friends, family, and fellow countrymen are safe.
If you don't understand how those 2 thoughts can exist at the same time, then yes, that's unbelievable.

I am pretty sure the Fed and State Gov'ts have learned from Katrina. I see absolutely no problem with over warning and over preparing for an event that doesn't happen.

Agreed. But, its reporting like this that newscasters fight for. This is what wins them local emmy awards.

Yeah, that's why I was afraid of Matthew.. Wilma was nowhere near the strength as Matthew was predicted.

I don't mean to say that there won't be power outages, that's unavoidable. What there won't be is- 3 weeks without power. Stop lights and gas stations without power for several weeks (new laws have made that impossible) Losing water for 7 days. I think I went without cable and internet for almost 9 weeks- that also won't happen again.

I don't want to downplay what could potentially happen if a major storm hits..but again, there just won't be a repeat of 2005.
I think we should be proud of how proactive the state has become.

Not true about traffic lights. We had non-functioning lights more than 24 hours after the storm. Generators were placed at the more busy intersections, since NO ONE in Florida remembers an intersection without a functioning light becomes a 4 way stop.

But your scenario involved a much stronger storm. If we'd been hit by a Wilma, the damage would be much worse. As I said before, a substantial portion of the damage to the power grid was due to fallen trees. The estimate is 500 trees fell; about 1,000 fell during Kate in 1985. There's going to be serious discussions about effective tree triming...and underground utilities.
