Hurricane Matthew

Probably an eyewall replacement cycle. Here's what Weather Underground had to say about it:

In the early afternoon, Matthew began forming concentric eyewalls--typically the prelude to an eyewall replacement cycle (ERC), where the inner eyewall collapses and a new larger-diameter outer eyewall takes over. At 3 pm EDT, the Hurricane Hunters found two concentric closed eyewalls--an inner eyewall 12 miles in diameter, and an outer eyewall 75 miles in diameter. Just three hours later, the inner eyewall had shrunk to 8 miles in diameter, and the outer one to 57 miles in diameter. At this time, a portion of the inner eyewall passed over Settlement Point on Grand Bahama Island, bringing sustained winds of 75 mph, gusting to 86 mph (and as high as 105 mph at 6:11 pm EDT). Around 7 pm EDT, Miami radar indicated that the inner eyewall had reconnected to the outer eyewall via a spiral band, while the outer eyewall continued to contract.
The good news is that systems tend to weaken somewhat during this cycle. The bad news is they can re-intensify once the new eyewall is established.

Thanks. I wasn't sure what the impact of the dual eyewall and ERC means to the strength/dissipation of the storm.

I'm brand new here, but is it common for guests to blame Disney for not doing a better job of informing them about the hurricane? Not the logistical info, but the actual hurricane?? Am I missing something? It has been all over the news for a solid week.
It is common for guests to blame Disney for, well, anything really. I mean come on, they could've put a tarp over all the parks and stayed open ;)

I will never understand this type of response that it's Disney's responsibility to tell you about an approaching storm. It is YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to keep yourself and your family informed and take appropriate actions not Disney's. it is Disney's responsibility to do everything reasonably possible to keep the environment safe, that's it.

For those who are not familiar with what to do, there is a TV in your room with local meteorologists who are among the best in the world at understanding and explaining all of this. Take some personal responsibility and turn the TV on and learn what you need to know.

I'm sorry for the rant here but complaining that Disney didn't inform you is just ridiculous. Take responsibility for yourself and keep yourself informed.

I'm sorry, but it goes both ways. I knew about the possibility of Matthew before traveling because I plan to the hilt, and made the appropriate adjustments based on the weather reports, these boards, and my family in the area. And I absolutely agree that whenever you are traveling, you should keep abreast to what is going on in the area, be it weather, safety, or otherwise.

However, this is absolutely something that any resort, Disney or otherwise, should be keeping its guests informed on. Anything that is going to severely impact safety or resort operations (and in the case of Disney, park operations) should be relayed to the guests - in a way that they will be guaranteed to see it. That's pretty basic in the hospitality industry.

I'm not claiming Disney doesn't do its due diligence to take steps to keep their guests safe, but I do believe that their notification system to their resort guests about what is going on could be improved upon.

I was fully aware of the hurricane since I've been looking up the information online in the past couple days. I was constantly checking up the website to get the latest updates when I was in the parks. However, not everyone was doing this espically when people are on vacation. Is it too much to ask for Disney letting their guests know that there's an upcoming server hurricane, which was even described as "this storm will kill you" by the authorities? I honestly don't understand why some people get so offensive here when someone write anything that's not positive about Disney.

Watching Rick Scott's press conference right now. He's indicating storm surges up to 11 feet. That will swamp many coastal cities.

If you are in an area under evacuation and haven't, go now. Scott just said traffic on 528 is moving smoothly. And there are 130 shelters in the state, none at capacity. And he just said no reported fuel shortages along the Turnpike and interstates.
Thanks. I wasn't sure what the impact of the dual eyewall and ERC means to the strength/dissipation of the storm.

Yeah those things are common with storms like this.

It's also a sign of how bad this storm is.

I'm at French quarter now and all we got was a voicemail message yesterday saying something like watch your voicemail for alerts. The one we got today was about buying a boxed meal. Long lines for gift shop and food when I was there around 430-5. Stay safe everyone!

This a ridiculous statement. Feel free to not be positive about Disney but something like this is just not being an adult. It's been on the news, radio, online, phone alerts and spoken about by millions of people for days. It's about taking some personal accountability for oneself and your family. Make a decision and live with it without blaming other people. The lack of accountability is what's wrong with the world today.

There just wasn't much information to relay. Orlando is not an evacuation zone. You were safe. You have a phone, access to the Internet, and televisions.

If you make the choice to book a vacation during hurricane season, then it's probably wise to know the weather in that area... And If you do know that there is a hurricane that could potentially head towards your area, then it would be even more wise to check updates regarding it's path.

I guess I just don't understand what more people wanted Disney to do.

Especially when there was not even a hurricane in Orlando today. At what point are our travel plans our own responsibility?

You are absolutely correct, if you can inform your guest about your upcoming dining reservations with emails, then you can inform your guest on what is going on and what you should do to keep you and your family safe.
