Hurricane Matthew

We're staying at Pop Century as well. Went to Epcot today and left around the same time as you do. There were definitely much fewer people in the park. By the time we got to the park (around 11am), the weather was gorgeous for about an hour long. We went to Soarin and the wait was 30 minutes. However, I checked up the app at around 4pm and it shows the wait for frozen was 105 minutes. When we came back to the resort, the wait was incredibly long at the food court. But it got way worse when we went there again at around 7pm.

Stay safe.

If you (or anybody else currently riding out the storm on property) don't mind, my WDW fanatic son asked to to post a few questions on the board:

1. Where are the resort employees staying? They're not commuting, presumably. Are they operating on a skeleton crew?

2. How short were the lines in the parks this afternoon?

3. Are you freely able to drive on/off property?

4. Are the hotel restaurants serving full or limited menus?

and my favorite question from him (he was imagining us being down there and knows how much I love to escape for an hour at night to walk over to the Poly for cocktails):

5. Is Trader Sam's Grog Grotto open?

We drove here from D.C. and brought some food&snack with us so we didn't buy anything from the food court. I feel really sorry for those people who have to wait in the incredibly long lines. And I totally agree with you about how poorly we were informed about the hurricane from Disney. I got nothing but a note from a guy 30 minutes ago asking us to check the voicemail regularly through the in-room phone by pressing the message retrieval button. They printed out what the message retrieval button looked like (a mail icon) but I found it nowhere on the phone.

Was the note from the front desk? We never received anything. Just noticed the message icon blinking again - this time it was informing us about modified dining and to stay at your home resort for food. No reservations tonight will be honored for anyone staying outside the resort.

Of course, I noticed the blinking light at 8:05, and the message was apparently left at 7:15...so that's great if there was something that needed immediate attention.

I'm shocked that with all the information stored on MDE accounts, there's been no mass emailing of information to resort guests. I get an email every time I alter a dining reservation, but nothing for this? Seems like a bit of an oversight. I get far more information from these boards than I ever do through official channels.

People could have ordered from Garden Grocer, they could have ordered pizza delivery from Pizza Hut etc, or they could have taken an uber or drove out of WDW...or they could have stocked up on things from the quick service restaurants and mini grocers in the resorts earlier.

At some point people must be responsible for their own actions. I'm not criticizing the ones who did not leave property..but you can't exactly criticize Disney for providing an option to them..and charging a price for it.

Worst. Post. Ever.

We are at the French Quarter. Lines at the food court for the food packs where extremely long going all through the lobby area. We went to the Publix this afternoon to get all the food and drinks we need, so luckily didn't have to stand in that line. Epcot today was great, some rain but nothing too bad. Soarin was a 30 minute wait, but we waited only 20.

Smart decision! Glad you got some park time in today!

I'm brand new here, but is it common for guests to blame Disney for not doing a better job of informing them about the hurricane? Not the logistical info, but the actual hurricane?? Am I missing something? It has been all over the news for a solid week.
Last week there was a thread where several people were complaining about free water cups not being large enough.. So I guess blaming them for not informing you of a highly publicized hurricane, during hurricane season, wouldn't be too far of a stretch..

It was a uniformed guy who was knocking every guests room and hand them the letters by the time I got back from my second trip(around 8pm) to the lobby. I'm not sure if he leaves the letter under the room if no one opens the door or not. I was just back at time when he was knocking the door next to mine. He didn't say a single word to me tho when he handed me the letter.

Our DDs were in Epcot today, too.
From the snap chats oldest sent out it looked like they were havin' an awesome time.
One showed how light the crowds were. It was pretty empty.

I will never understand this type of response that it's Disney's responsibility to tell you about an approaching storm. It is YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to keep yourself and your family informed and take appropriate actions not Disney's. it is Disney's responsibility to do everything reasonably possible to keep the environment safe, that's it.

For those who are not familiar with what to do, there is a TV in your room with local meteorologists who are among the best in the world at understanding and explaining all of this. Take some personal responsibility and turn the TV on and learn what you need to know.

I'm sorry for the rant here but complaining that Disney didn't inform you is just ridiculous. Take responsibility for yourself and keep yourself informed.

Checked out of Pop this morning. Line to the front desk was very long but moved quick.

Went to EPCOT before leaving... In between the rain it was lovely. Saw the Muppet mobile lab out and about even.

The trash cans were all grouped together, many outdoor stores were totally closed with stock completely cleared, and all the food and wine tables were gone. The food and wine booths were all open, but with only one cashier inside the booth, and all the utensils on the booth counter as well. This way at the end of the day... Just close up the booth and walk away. Smart!

Rain came and went, during one long bit of rain I ducked into the Rose And Crown and was delighted that Carol Stein was playing! Nothing like an English pub singing along to Supercal as a hurricane was headed into town.

Uh oh, TWC just said Matthew has two eye walls. How common is that?

Probably an eyewall replacement cycle. Here's what Weather Underground had to say about it:

In the early afternoon, Matthew began forming concentric eyewalls--typically the prelude to an eyewall replacement cycle (ERC), where the inner eyewall collapses and a new larger-diameter outer eyewall takes over. At 3 pm EDT, the Hurricane Hunters found two concentric closed eyewalls--an inner eyewall 12 miles in diameter, and an outer eyewall 75 miles in diameter. Just three hours later, the inner eyewall had shrunk to 8 miles in diameter, and the outer one to 57 miles in diameter. At this time, a portion of the inner eyewall passed over Settlement Point on Grand Bahama Island, bringing sustained winds of 75 mph, gusting to 86 mph (and as high as 105 mph at 6:11 pm EDT). Around 7 pm EDT, Miami radar indicated that the inner eyewall had reconnected to the outer eyewall via a spiral band, while the outer eyewall continued to contract.
