I know that Disney does not do rain checks, but what about hurricane/tropical storms. What will Disney do if you are on vacation at the property during such an event?

There are no refunds for park passes. We were there in 1999 for Hurricane Floyd when Disney closed the parks. There were no refunds given then.

What Disney will do however, is have employees stay at your resort to ride out the hurricane with you (called "Ride Out Crews") and they will keep one restaurant open in your resort so you can eat.

I actually thought that was pretty decent of them. If I was a CM, there's no way I'd stay at work while my house may be getting flooded and what not. I hope those CMs got big bonuses for staying with us.

NOOOO,

What does the florida weather channel say about this possible hurricane? i looked on weather.com and it says nothing about it when you pull up "orlando." im hoping it will skirt past florida seeing were coming down there on the 23rd :)

doh

It's still too early to tell. Some forecast models have it going towards Yucatan (away from Florida) and others have it going North (towards the Panhandle) and others have it veering to the northeast because there's a cold front pushing through the gulf right now that might take it to the north and then north east.

IF it heads to the northeast, then it Orlando will probably feel the outer fringe effects (tropical storm winds and rain). But.. like I said.. its still too early to tell.

Check www.orlandosentinel.com and go to the weather section.

I've been avoiding this thread because were coming down next week to hop on board the disney magic for a cruise. As long as its there this week it should be gone by next week. Is there a fingers crossed icon that I can put here?

I just watched the Weather Channel and it said that it´s going to hit Cuba and probably continue inside the Gulf of Mexico towards Texas and Mexican coasts. They didn´t mention Florida that much as it is hard to tell the route it will follow.

We are going to get showers and winds but judging from the weather right now here, I would say we will even thank for them!

I think Bahamas will be safe, so don´t worry about it. :animwink:

well, more "good?" news...

According to "www.wunderground.com/tropical" there is not a probability of it hitting florida in the next 72 hours, and the computer models have it aiming north to new orleans, but the model stops there. they really dont go that far into the future.

(map courtesy of www.wunderground.com)

anyway, if it keeps on its current trend of moving slow and whatnot it shouldnt have an effect on our travels for next week. It is moving realllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllly sllllllllooooooooooowwwwwwww, and if it is only making it to the western yucatan by monday, it would prolly take a couple days to get to florida's coast anyway, providing it does a 180 and whatnot.

good thing i got that degree in law enforcement...lol, i could be making $50k more and have a far less dangerous time doing it....lol, although, id be one of those schumcks they send out to cover the hurricane and put them right in the middle of it. I give Jim Cantore a lot of credit for doing what he does, seems like that guy is always in the middle of something.....:veryconfu

next update (by me anyway): saturday evening 23 hrs central time

I love the "Do Not Use For Planning Purposes" warning! Do they think we're just weather fanatics? :hammer:

Seriously, where else can you, as an expert, make scientific predictions but allow that no one should really depend upon them because you could be very wrong?

Doctor to patient: "Sir, I think this medicine will help you, or maybe this one, or perhaps this other one, but please don't count on any of them, because I could be completely wrong. Have a nice day."

i totally agree, so called "dr. of meteorology" cant spell today...

anyway

i said id update at 23:00, well, i lied, im updating now....

(as if anyone cares..lol):hammer:

the good news (according to the weather channel) is that the hurricane will be heading towards texas/mexico on tuesday, which to me, the untrained weather expert, means that if it were to make a U turn, it would reach florida by friday? cause it takes three days to get from cuba (or Cuber if your from mass.....hey, cuber is surrounded by wat-a) to mexico, then wouldnt it take 3 days, possibly 4 to turn around and back track?

heres the latest map, courtesy of www.wunderground.com (and my copying and pasting experitse):drevil:

sorry, the map is all fudged. Moral of the story, its heading towards texas/mexico with a possible progression north to new orleans....

Well, I was concerned! ;) I know you've explained exactly where your home is on the peninsula, but of course, I've forgotten. Glad to hear you're OK.

I´ll be, thanks! :animwink:

We had Gilbert (still the "hurricane of the century" -last century that is-) hit our city in 1988. The "eye" of the hurricane was right on top of us on september 14th at around this time of the day. IT was very impressive how everything gets sooooo quiet, nothing moves (cause you are in the center of it) and then like half an hour later it starts moving again with very strong winds (it was category 5) and going in the opposite way as before the calm started. That´s scary! We spent the night like that, until next morning when we went out of the house to see the devastation around us: fallen trees, no phone, no electricity, fallen wires, and water everywhere! Our house and us were fine, but a tree fell on my dad´s office and had to be removed, and we went to help poor families with blankets and food the following days.

I´ve experienced many hurricanes, but nothing like Gilbert, I swear... rain and winds is kind of a joke when we remember being in the center of the hurricane and that dead calm for those minutes... scary! ;)

Not that I can recall. But, the Floridians on the board may know more about this.

The real problem with a hurricane hitting Disney, is that Orlando is where all the people on the coast go when they evacuate. (I guess the theory is that it is far enough inland, the the storm will be weakend by the time it rolls over Orlando. But this theory doesn't work well for mega-storms like Floyd))

So, as we learned with Floyd, there is no where to run when a hurricane hits Orlando. When we were there for Floyd, we ran into alot of people who were staying in WDW resorts because they hed been evacuated from the coastal areas.

The storm may weaken a teeny bit coming inland to Orlando. Coming inland also protects you from the surge of the storm which is our main concern where we live. You still will get unbelievable amounts of rain, wind gust, and tornadic activity, but Orlando is safe from storm surge. And that is what killed the most people here when Hurricane Betsy hit here in 1965. Some people went in their attics to escape the surge and drowned.
