Hurricane Isaac

I wish I had bright news for you, but unfortunately, hurricanes are not something to take lightly, not even for the 10ft bulletproof type. In any major storm, trailers of any kind are first to be evacuated. There is still the chance Orlando will see very little other than rain, but as you've read from others, it is too soon to tell. If you make the journey, do some research ahead of time. Find out where your nearest shelter will be, have plenty of medications on hand in the event additional meds cannot be obtained, and seriously consider a hotel. Keep in mind that if you decide to go to a hotel, the longer you wait, the harder it will be to find something with availability, they fill up quickly because now you have local people moving to safer shelter too. Be safe, don't take any chances with standing water and hopefully, you'll have beautiful weather and a blast with your family.

Hurricanes are fairly fast and Orlando is no where near the coast so the worse case is you get some wind and rain for a few hours, if it hits during the night you won't even notice. The news people play up hurricanes but for the most part they are nothing more than a rain shower unless you live on the coast.

Hurricane Charlie called from 2004, he'd like a word...

As of right now, looks like Isaac would make land full well south of us, or stay to the east, which puts us on the weaker side. Still a lot of torrential rain--imagine the afternoon rain going on for hours--and decent winds that will mess up WDW transportation. We're still the better part of a week out, tho, so it doesn't hurt to pay attention to see if anything changes.

Agreed you never know what a Hurricane can develop. The storm and the winds are trerrible enough but the storm surge is dealiest. Being WDW is inland it would not be affected too much by a surge; however The unstable mas causes a great deal of tornatic activity and flooding. Just this past June when TS Debbie came throught the west coast there was severe flooding as the storm stalled in its movement. Plus we were being issued tornado warnings about every 5 minutes. A warning is when a Tornado is in you immediate area.
Right now the storm is still developing and the track has not been truly plotted. Most of the models have it going to hit Miami which is a good distance from Disney; however tthe storms effects can reach out hundreds of miles.
There is onlyt one track at this time showing the storm going through Miami then across Central Florida and then out Tampa into the Gulf and them back to the Pan Handle.
Just stay informed. I use the Storm Shield Ap on my I-phone and keep an eye on NOAA National Hurricane Center.

Okay Floridians, I'm from the Midwest so I have NO idea what these things are like other than the super bad ones we have seen on the news. From what I'm seeing they are forcasting a category 1?? We are leaving (or supposed to be leaving) Missouri tomorrow morning and would arrive in Florida around Sat night, .... around the same time as Issac. Honest opinions please, we are staying in a large SeaBreeze camper with my VERY hard headed (will not go to a hotel for nothing) father and my mom, hubby and 4 year old daughter. What will this be like in Orlando? I know we aren't on the coast but does this just mean for Orlando? lots of rain?? Tornadoes??? Like very bad storm, lightning? Sorry if it's a stupid question, I just want opinions from people who know vs listening to my dad who think's he's 10ft tall and bulletproof. Our little girl will be there an I don't want to risk her for anything. Our "park day" was Monday due to having a reservation at CRT but really from watching the weather channel, I'm thinking maybe we shouldn't even go. Ideas?
The storm is actuially not suppose to really make landfall until Monday or Tuesday. There is a 40% chance of rain for Saturday which is kind of normal for this time of year.

Well, I just talked to my dad again, we are jumping ship so to speak. Going to head to California to Disneyland instead. We've all taken off work and can't really rearrange our schedules. To make it down Sat night/Sun we had to leave tomorrow, which will make it too late when the hurricane decides which way it's going. We will be stuck at that point. If we were in the resort and not in the camper I wouldn't be quite so concerned. I wish everyone the best and thank you all for so much help in my planning and re-planning etc... too late to plan anything for Disneyland now, we are just going to head that way and go with the flow. As long as our DD (4) gets to see the Mouse and the Princesses all will be well. :) She won't know the difference in the parks at this point. Hopefully someday we will make it down to Florida. We shall see! Thank you again for all your help, I receieved such detailed answers, you all amaze me with your helpfullness and kindness! :)

keep an eye on the updates. it's a little early overall as far as hurricanes go but right now they're saying isaac will be a cat 1 hurricane as it comes over the state hitting the orlando area basically sunday-ish...plus there is another ts named ten right behind it. we live 2 1/2 hours north of disney so we've been watching as well, for us it's more like monday morning. just keep an eye out...a cat one inland usually means rain, some wind, and possible power outages (which is what we hate most because of the heat, humidity, and lack of cable lol). can't say about flights tho...good luck.

The nice thing about Florida, it's all sand! So all that rain goes away fast. You will probably just have a day or two of rain. The parks will be deserted. Take full advantage of it!

What makes this storm tricky to track right now is that there is no real defined center. Actually looking at this image it almost looks like two centers. Locating the center of circulation is pretty critical on tracking and predicting where these things will go.

Arrive Saturday (25th), we'll be there thru Wednesday (29th), debating cancelling/re-scheduling.
I know Disney's policy states that if a Hurricane warning is issued, they will offer a re-schedule, but is it that specific? Will they allow a re-booking on a Tropical Storm, that's forecasted to be a hurricane by the time it hits land?

Not so much. The Jacksonville area can flood pretty bad - in my town, we had several hundred homes dammaged just a couple of months ago along the Black Creek. Water level was several feet high for almost a full week - the creek crested somewhere around 17' above flood stage.

Oh...my back yard? Clay. All clay. Try planting trees in that!

Those were our dates too. We decided to not risk it. I'd rather lose 200.00 than be stuck in a hotel room for days and not get to do anything, or worse!

First, they don't know that this will be a hurricane when it comes through Florida (assuming it doesn't rapidly turn and go elsewhere, which I doubt.). The thing has been trying forever and has yet to make it to hurricane. They're still saying it has no strong center and they don't know what will happen.

I once had to cancel less than 24 hours out for a family medical emergency. They didn't charge me a dime. They didn't make me list everything off. They told me not to worry, they'd take care of canceling everything, called back to make sure it was me who had called in the first place (smart!), and said they hoped that my family member would get better.

I give Disney a lot of crap for a lot of stuff, but when I was in the middle of one of the hardest times of my life, they were efficient, professional and kind. It was one trouble I didn't have to worry about or deal with.

And I didn't get charged a dime. By Disney, anyway. There were other cancel fees.

National Hurricane Center, as of this morning is giving it a 29% chance of hitting Category 1 on Monday, then about 28% on Tuesday. Of course, this is out beyond the 72 hour forecast, which pretty much makes everything highly unpredictable. The good news is that the tracks have shifted the center of it to the west of Florida and in the Gulf of Mexico.

We made the decision last night that we would go, regardless of the situation, and just make the best of it. Ultimately, I think we may have a wet and windy day on Monday, but even at Cat 1, that's a pretty mild storm. It may mean we have to spend part of the day inside, but we're okay with that. The projections for the storm also seem to be moving it thru pretty fast, so I'm guessing at the worst we will lose 1 day.

Thanks SGT! As long as the plane gets us there, we are going. One day in the hole won't hurt but, I just don't want to disappoint my nieces. We have the Illuminations Prive Boat Ride scheduled for Monday night. I have a sad feeling this may not happen.
