Hurricane Ian expected to impact Florida (updates and related discussions)

Yeah, I’m sorry, we’ve got 30+ pages of “severe flooding, power outages for days, unsafe water conditions, zero available supplies, health hazards” warnings for basically the entire state, and now we’re going to shame people for evacuating because they’re not in flood zone A?

Been watching the Orlando weather /news they are saying Ian will make land fall as a cat 3 and move inland as a cat 1 all the way up to Jacksonville. Here in coastal SC wind and a lot of rain. Will be cleaning the gutters out today

I wonder if they are reversing westbound or northbound lanes on on any roadways to try and increase capacity out of Tampa.

FDOT / FHP is charged with the highway evacuation system. Contraflow used to be an active part of that planning, but went away some years ago. I doubt the knowledge or staffing is available now to accomplish even in extreme circumstances.

"Due to severe inclement weather conditions expected to impact the Central Florida area over the next few days, the Walt Disney World Resort officially confirmed that Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser will be cancelling their next two voyages with dates starting on September 27 and September 29. As of now, normal operations are expected to be resumed on October 1, but that could change depending on the intensity of the storm and how the resort is affected by it."

Since Disney has suspended all hotel reservations throughout the duration of the storm, I hope Disney can accommodate guests who may already be on property who are either ending their trip or sandwiching the SW Hotel in between their Disney stay and now find themselves without a place to stay.

Rosen will be happy to provide a room for $100 a night hurricane rate

The issue with these evacuations is that a lot more people evacuate than should be evacuating. Only the people who are ordered or recommended to evacuate should be doing so because of the flooding/storm surge risk. People who evacuate because they don't want to be home in a power outage clog up the roads for the people who NEED to get out.

Nothing really out of the ordinary this morning with traffic in central Florida.

We’ve got screened gutters when storms are coming.. It is well worth the cost. Much less work to clean out.

Man this storm went from "memes lol" to "everybody panic" for people in Orlando real quick. Contemplating driving down to Fort Lauderdale to stay with family.
Some reports say it may follow 2004 Charley path. If you didn’t live through it one may not understand.

So it looks like Ian will hit Tampa as a Cat 3 or low-level Cat 4 storm assuming the current path holds. That's some Hurricane Sandy-level stuff.

I don't know how despite being hit by so many hurricanes Florida has yet to experience Katrina/Harvey-level catastrophes. I don't know if that luck will run out this week but it's just odd.

How many people are actually in that thing? Not many.

But to your point: the disruption in travel and early Evac (there are always a lot) should create enough room flex to satisfy overflow.
