Hurricane Ian expected to impact Florida (updates and related discussions)

One of the power companies has stated they have been working for years to move power lines underground as a way to help prevent failures. But it is not going to be perfect. You have wind, storm surges, flash flooding...
Then why are they still actively building above ground lines as part of new construction? Why are they spending money replacing above ground power lines instead of spending the money to properly upgrade?

Tell that to the peeps in Cape Coral area who kept hearing warnings for Tampa, so they felt a sense of safety.

This tin foil hat I'm wearing keeps my brain protected.
So they went deaf when the hurricane warning and surge warning for them, which were issued AT THE SAME TIME. Yes the surge was twice the as high but they forecasted enough surge it still would have affected them.

You have some interesting expectations. There is infrastructure to prevent failures.. That they are not perfect doesn’t mean there is not a significant improvement in reliability. The companies say they are working on it, usually to get people off their back following mass outages. They slow roll actually doing the work because it’s cheaper in the short term. They absolutely could get more work done in a shorter time frame. This happens over and over again with utility companies, they promise all of these improvements, raise rates to fund them, and then just don’t do them and nobody holds them accountable for lying.

But fact was weren't those areas under a mandatory evac anyways? As in my previous post, listen to the experts, but many don't
If you are stating a fact - why are you asking the question? I can't tell you for sure whether it was mandatory or not. All i can tell you is i have a friend who lives in Englewood. He escaped to his daughter's house, leaving on Tuesday at 1 PM.

In ground lines are way more expensive and then when they do need maintenance its also way more expensive to dig everything up.

I believe they could've been more focused on the high degree of uncertainty - because that's exactly what happened here.

Anyone who bothered to look at the updates could see that this storm was jogging east on almost all the updates.

I don't trust anything with the words "National" in front of it. Our government has a history of being inept.
Excately my point.. you don't trust anything with the word National in it, Why? these are experts in their field; I am curious why one thinks they can trust themselves more vs. an expert in their field? is it this conspirarcy theory world many live in? Are people so dis trusting Govt they ignore it?? I mean I have friends and family who work for various forms of Govt backed entities. These are normal people who studied their "craft" and have no ill intentions or political agenda. Sure we are all human, can make errors, but if I am placing my bets I am going with the "national" or expert group who leads.

PP: these questions were not directly for you, but just a general pondering on those who also feel like you.

That’s the drop shaft area, it looks like the building is still structurally sound but I wonder if the TRex support and/or flume track was damaged.

so as the storm shifted roughly 48 hours out and continued to shift - did he warn anyone where the storm actually came ashore?
YES. All day the from the end of the day on the 26th and on, they shifted things South (though Ft. Myers continued to be in the cone before that, just not centered). Here are the models on the 27th. Everything shifted. And so did the media coverage. Why do you think the storm chasers were in the correct spot? They didn't stay in Tampa still warning of it there.
