How will Universal's Epic Universe effect Disney?

Universal Orlando rail station could open by 2030

This is a big key right here...missed opportunity by Disney. Yes, this will bring more tourist to Universal.

BREAKING: Brightline High-Speed Rail Station at Disney Springs Confirmed to be Canceled

Yes, we've been discussing it in the choo-choo thread acknowledging the DS stop is dead a while back.

Also discussing what this actually means for the parks. How will people with luggage deal with the nearby park stop and getting to their final hotel destination. And will this actually bring in more people who already can get to the parks via car/bus/taxi.

From a parks perspective…it probably means next to nothing

But as far as being included in Orlando/Florida longterm infrastructure…it’s an important symbol

The bobs have zero vision…and Wall Street can’t run entertainment companies dependent on PR very well

I am excited for Epic Universe, however outside of Mario and Fantastic Beasts areas, I'm not sure if the classic monsters or how to train your dragon areas are going to be a big draw for the park.
Perhaps we're in the minority, but my husband and I are more excited about the Classic Monsters land than any land, in any park, ever! (Maybe it's an age thing. We're Gen-Xers, and grew up watching those movies because it's what scared our parents when they were teens, and because they were the only "horror" movies we were permitted to see when we were little.) We used to treat Monsters Cafe at USF like a walk-through museum, and linger in each room enjoying the props and trivia. The idea of a whole land built around those iconic films is a huge draw for us.

I think that monstersland can be very effective.

But I admit…I’m a sucker for classic Hollywood.

In studios last week…I found myself still being amused much more by the soundtrack and the original sunset/Hollywood boulevard throwback details in design…and the grapefruit cake…more than I ever could be for abramsland (which I’m the perfect age for…fyi)

I'd imagine the trains going there will be just like ones that go to airports - lots of luggage racks. Then depending on the final position of the station a few shuttle coaches. Heck given Uni went all-in on getting the station there they may even offer a bag drop service.

I’ve long held to the idea that the IDrive corridor is key for Uni. South of Sandlake with ICON has been built out nicely.

Uni is making the investment near the convention hotels and along Universal Blvd.

I’d imagine we’re going to see some more investment north of Sandlake (either by Uni or other big players). I know that a Lionsgate Resort was rumored before the pandemic.

You think IOA hey? I honestly could see people cutting out USF - that park is stagnant imo.

Do IOA and Epic, Skip USF.

Part of what’s been discussed is moving some of the “back of the house” over to EPIC.

Which frees up space for expansion at the current parks. Then you also have a potential Diagon expansion moving into the space occupied by Fear Factor. Rumored to be a Potter style broom attraction similar to FoP

I wouldn’t “stick a fork” into USF yet.

You may be right…

But that is also prone to low value housing sprawl…and new timeshares that people swear “are really nice”…but are not.

That is what I’m really looking forward to.

My kids are all geeked about Nintendoland and HTTYD.

Throw in the new Potterland - and if this is executed correctly - it’s going to be a nice park.
It’s probably going to be largest quality addition to Orlando since dak. Somebody tap on iger’s tanning both in Malibu and let him know?

I keep beating this drum, but Nintendo (and games in particular) have been as disruptive to conventional movie studios/IP as, say, Pixar was to classic Disney. My kids enjoy the Disney stuff (Star Wars, etc.) but they live and breathe gaming. The Beast from BATB can't hold a candle the Mr. Beast (ask your kids). Disney is completely lacking in this regard, and Universal is far more well-positioned to serve this segment given their association with Nintendo.

That Super Mario movie is going to make 2x whatever animated features Disney releases this year.

Agreed. I keep reading people say how their kids love Disney so they continue to go. Yet those kids are more into Harry Potter and Nintendo but the cause the parents are hung up on Disney nostalgia, Universal is never thought of much.

I mean, not sticking a fork in it by any means, but I assume no major changes are coming to USF until well after Epic opens, which is why I feel if people cut a universal park out, it would be USF.

Yes. Those changes are not what I consider major, they won’t shift the needle.

I am strictly speaking of when Epic opens, and which parks make be taken off the list of a guest IF they have to pick one to cut.
Personally, I’d cut DHS.

USF gives you Mardi Gras, the parades, Diagon Alley, Rip, Mummy, MiB, Minions, ET. I enjoy it there more so than DHS.
