How will Flight of Passage affect Soarin'

I know in Philharmagic, the 3-D is focused towards the middle of the screen, and 2-D is used for the peripheral views, could they have figured out a way to make the 3-D effect encompass the entire screen so that there is no blind spot? That alone could make this attraction a game changer because you would truly feel immersed in the environment.

Unless they have figured out how to change the laws of physics, there is a limitation to how close to the edge of the screen the 3D effect can be. In simple terms there are 2 images shifted relative to each other. As you shift, the edge of one of the images is moved off of the screen. Therefore, the area close to the edge can't physically have the 3D effect. The more pronounced the effect, the more it has to be closer to the middle of the screen because the images are shifted more relative to each other. Some 3D movies (especially animated) have used a "floating window" to get around this. Basically they make the image not take up the whole screen so the 3D can be closer to the edge. The down side is there is a black border of screen around the image so the entire screen isn't used.

To add on that thought. Wonder how they are going to pull off 3-d whilst banking / rotating. Standard polarized 3d (all Disney attractions / modern movies) does not work once the viewing angle changes. Try tilting your head next time watching a 3d movie to see what I'm talking about.

If you are seeing a movie that uses Real-D (I know for sure on that one), tilting your head shouldn't matter. It uses circular polarization not linear polarization. Linear polarization does have the effect that you mention.

The Dolby 3D that is used on Star Tours is color based (as mentioned in another post) and doesn't have this effect either. When used with laser projection, Dolby 3D is also much brighter because it doesn't require filters on the projector. The lasers are "tuned" to the correct colors.

Just curious about the size of the screens for this ride when compared to the Soarin' theaters. Are the screens for the Flight of Passage ride going to be significantly larger than the screens used for Soarin'? I had not really thought about this until I saw this thread.

Flight of Passage Soarin' Over Pandora the Really Pretty Planet you Recall from Avatar that is not the Cartoon but that 3D Movie Made by James Cameron will have a very direct impact on the original Soarin' since the moment FoPSOPtRPPyRfAtintCbt3DMMbJC opens Soarin will be completely destroyed. I mean the building will be razed and no remnant of it will be left. Further, any cast member who worked there will be summarily executed, gangland style by Bob Iger.

The leaked plans show a 3D glasses cleaning area IIRC -- and the plans have seemed pretty accurate so far.

I know this is an old post, but does anybody know just how large this new 3D glasses cleaning area is? This could be a very important puzzle piece that could fit into a future Journey Into Imagination refurbishment (I don't want to derail this thread, though).

Here it is in the plans. Based on the size of the doors, which should be between 32 and 36 inches, the room would be somewhere around 30x40 feet.

Thank you. It seems large enough to handle the glasses from all four WDW parks (all of them are currently cleaned at Journey Into Imagination). That said, with four theaters there will be a lot of glasses to clean...

Is the scale of aerials precise enough that we can compare them with the prints, and not have to assume based on the door size?

Using Google Earth to get the scales gives me 37'x51' for the glasses cleaning area.

Well done!

Interesting. I wonder if updates to JII are waiting on the new facility to open. I can't imagine they would relocate it twice if they always planned to relocate it to this ride already.

I doubt they would let that hold up updates. Glasses cleaning could be done in any empty space on property.

I imagine there's some specialized equipment that does the cleaning, that would need to be uninstalled/reinstalled. Perhaps it's just a room full of Muppets with buckets of soapy water that could all hop in a taxi and make their way to the new cleaning room. :)

I've said consistently that I'm concerned that Flight of Passage won't be the big draw that most E-tickets are. Simulators don't typically move the needle as attractions that move through a physical space. Having said that, some things in Flight of Passage that could happen and be more intriguing than Soarin':
  • 3D
  • 60 frames per second
  • Greater range of motion than Soarin'

everyone that's had access to this ride has come back saying how this is a much bigger deal than Soarin

The only people i've seen praising it with having experienced the ride in some form have worked for Disney. Such as Bob Iger himself. And of course the people working for the company are not going to say something like "well it's basically a rehash of Soarin so nothing you've not already seen before". Take what employees say with a grain of salt (or a spoonful). Little Mermaid and 7DMT were also both hyped as E tickets and called amazing by Disney employees and brand advocates. And Toy Story Land at D23 was hilariously claimed to be on par with Cars Land.

Our trustworthy people here (who aren't company employees) haven't been so eager to praise it. It has been stated many times as being essentially a "Soarin 2.0" ride.

guy on the disboards who is a CM but does not like avatar came out and said he thinks it will be a great ride and is far superior to Soarin

Is that a personal opinion/expectation though, or has he/she actually ridden it in some fashion? The only people who have probably experienced the ride in some form are imagineers or executives. Other than that, all we can really go on are blueprints and words from people we trust on these forums such as Lee, Martin, Photodave, WDW1974 etc (who do have knowledge not disclosed to the public and have no reason to lie to us).

no offense to our outstanding insiders but until D23 they didnt even know whether or not a boat ride was happening
this project had been different in its secrecy
