How WDW Co. spins ...

These events are also in addition to regular park hours. The park does not close earlier on event nights. Depending on the night of the event the park is still open until 10 or 11. It is highly unlikely the park would have been open later if not for the event.

Except, compared to April 2015, closing at 10 or 11pm will most definitely be a reduction in park hours. Looking at Apr 2015, the MK was open until 1am on 12 days. It was open until 12am on 11 days. It was open until 11pm for only 7 days. On no days in April 2015 did MK close at 10pm.

Now let's take those other nights and make them paid after hours nights. Even if you make it for just Magic Kingdom and/or Epcot. It's the exclusive, low crowd option that the wealthy would be willing to pay for. The amount you're paying for labor and operational costs would be minuscule compared to what people are willing to pay for this option.

I can just see them trying some sort of after-hours "exclusive" Epcot thing during Food & Wine... but it would be near impossible to get the semi-inebriated day guests out of the park after Illuminations if the food booths were to stay open. Of course, what they should just do is keep the food booths open another hour or so; you'd think the additional revenue would be worth it... but today's park management doesn't seem to think that way.

Except that is not a fair comparison because in 2015 Easter/spring break fell in April. That is why park hours were later.

They did it last summer with the illuminations party. I think they just had a few locations that were easier to rope off, but I imagine if they sold tickets you would just get a wrist band and they could quickly usher out the guests who didn't pay. Leaving the booths open later would make sense too. I always thought that World Showcase should stay open 1hr after illuminations anyway. It would greatly spread the crowds out as they head out of the parks.

At least for 2 dates (4/28 and 5/5) it appears the park is definitely closing early for this event. It's only by an hour so maybe not the end of the world. There were no days in 2015 in the last half of April or the entire month of May when the park closed at 10pm. Spring break was the first 2 weeks of April last year but the 2nd 2 weeks of April and all of May were not impacted by Spring Break

I think it's more about making parents more responsible for their child's education.
A student falling behind by a full week could be detrimental to not just them, but their class as a whole.
Even if they are doing homework in the car, or hotel, they are still missing full days of school.

That's all just my opinion and I recognize that you've made good points as well.
Maybe I'd see things differently if I had been pulled out for a week during the term for a vacation, but I never had that experience.
It's true that missing a week could be detrimental to certain kids. The parents have to know their own kids. If they are already having trouble keeping up it may not be a great idea. If they have behavioral issues and/or trouble with transitions or change it may be a bad idea to get them out of their routine. For most kids it's not going to be an issue.

Where are you seeing that there were no days in May 2015 when the park closed at 10. Both calendars I'm looking at show 10 nearly every night

Odd. There are some other schedules online that show different information. I'd assume this one is accurate. Thanks.
Steve is usually really good and his calendar agrees with touring plans which is also very accurate with tracking things. They may have added hours closer to the month if projected crowds were going to be above average. This happened a few times last year. That could happen again this year...except on days with up sell tickets already sold:oops:

Agreed. Although at this point there is little reason for anyone to complain about this. If you're interested go. If you're not or think it's overpriced then don't go. At least in its current state this is an additional offering. Yes it's overpriced and it's clearly an attempt to quickly make more money. However no guest offerings have been removed for this. At least not yet. It is unlikely the park would have been open later than 10 or 11 for day guests regardless of these events. Last May the park closed at 10 nearly every day of the month.

last year for these dates the park closed at 12 or 1 FYI

I see the number 3000 bounced around as how many guest tickets that will be sold for this "after hours" event. Me? I think they will sell as many tickets as they can. This is a way they can raise PGRS ie the bottom line. Why would they limit it? 3000 would be a blip on the radar as far as capacity is concerned in the MK. Oh no they will sell as many tickets that there are guest that want them. Will it be a success or will it crash and burn? Only time will tell. And as we have seen in the past if it is successful it will only be a precursor to other events like this at other parks. A special VIP event at Avatar or SW attraction? You can see this coming a Disney mile away.

Because someone has to pay for the debacle in Shanghai.
And the losses are certainly not going to come out of the Iger minions bonuses.
God, I hope Shanghai starts to turn a profit this year otherwise we'll likely be paying a Sidewalk use fee, a Breathing Disney Air fee, a Gawkers fee to watch the parades and fireworks, and paying to get into a bathroom at WDW.

I hope shanghai fails so badly that force resignations run rampant and the share holders point fingers....but that wont happen.

I really hope Disney caps this event at a low amount, otherwise it seems really unfair to regular park goers and special eventers. One of the benefits of going to the park is sticking around to the closing hours when most of the families have gone home and you can get a couple more E-ticket rides in. That's negated if a rush of people start arriving in the closing hours, then no one's happy as the regular goers get booted out (sometimes as early as 10) while crowd levels are up, and the people that paid for the event find bigger lines than anticipated.

It's only by an hour so maybe not the end of the world.

Even if it is "only" one hour, let's look at the MK per hour cost increase between equivalent days in Apr 2015 and Apr 2016, taking into account both the one hour decrease and the increase in ticket price:

Thursday Apr 30, 2015
One day MK ticket = $111.83
Hours 9am-11pm, or 14 hours
$7.99/hour

Thursday Apr 28, 2016
One day MK ticket (regular season) = $117.15
Hours 9am-10pm or 13 hours
$9.01/hour

Or an increase of 12.8% per hour from 2015 to 2016

Think it gets better with multiple days? Nope.

Thursday, Apr 30, 2015
10 day MYW $388.73 or $38.87/day
Hours 9am-11pm, or 14 hours
$2.78/hour

Thursday, Apr 28, 2016
10 day MYW $426.00 or $42.60/day
Hours 9am-10pm, or 13 hours
$3.28/hour

Or an increase of 18.0% per hour from 2015 to 2016
