How much does Disney Social Media/TDO check on WDWmagic?

Ha... what a joke. '74 doesn't know... there are few, if any, plants on any of the fan forums, and it's VERY doubtful any threads are printed out for executives - unless it's for a joke.

At most, there may be a few entry level persons putting together reports of high level topics gathered from multiple sites.
I wasn't saying any of those as absolute fact. But anyways, many companies do have a few persons posting in the biggest forums of whatever their product is. Not saying it's a substantial amount of people. But it happens. Why do I know this? Because I had friends who got paid to do this for one of the Fortune 500 companies out there. Just like companies pay people (Disney included) to put a positive spin on things. But thanks for super really informative post...

It would seem logical for them to look into some of this. Companies spend tons of $ conducting benchmarking studies and customer surveys. While I'm sure most threads are not on their respective radars, it certainly wouldn't shock me if they have interns, 3rd party data groups, and/or various internal research areas looking into some of this.

First of all, I would like to say hi to all the Disney Social Media and TDO people who check out WDWmagic.com on a regular basis.

Hello yourself.

This sounds about right to me. If they are willing to pay people to stand at the front gates and stop guests as they enter just to get their opinions, why not have other employees sit in cubicle and peek in on these types of sites. Raw data/information mining is important to all companies. How they act on it is a different story. I mean, it doesn't look like they are going to re-open the Adventurer's Club any time soon.

Reading the site is very different than being a plant or trying to astroturf a site. People in Disney definitely keep their ear to the ground. Most large companies do. Any social media "expert", of which I believe Disney has plenty, monitor this stuff. If for no reason other than to avoid being blindsided. Just like the presidents press secretary does their best to know enough about everything to sound intelligent, they need to know what their customer fan base is talking about.

However, I'd hope that they would be smart enough to know that trying to astroturf WDWMagic would be pretty useless. Having a small core of rabid fans will do a good job of hunting down any plants. On a larger more general WDW site, a few plants or people from the Moms panel may fit in much better and be able to astroturf without being obvious.

You are diluting yourself if you don't believe that (at least) the larger fansites are being monitored. Not only as a free survey of what fans are talking about but also to spot and subdue negative trends.

Also I obviously cannot corroborate that there are people here posting as disney shills, but I would not be suprised. There often seems to be a some new people now and then with a dissenting voice to counteract the negative majority.

I would imagine they are much more interested in comments from twitter than here. They probably scan for comments when major announcements are made, but daily scanning for a pulse of the fan community I would think not.

It's just like any other business. When employees are bored and have time to kill, they surf the net and some come here to kill that time. No one comes here from Disney as a real or productive part of their job.

Both incorrect.
There are in fact Disney employees whose job it is to monitor social media and Internet forums. It is done every day, and will certainly include this thread.
Some individual posters are read/monitored more than others, based on past postings/blogs/tweets.
It is not uncommon at all for posts/threads to be printed out and sent up the chain, sometimes very high up. I know of meetings being called to address certain forum posts/posters.

As far as "plants", it is fairly well known in most circles that they exist. I was told once that there are at least three Disney accounts here on Magic, and as many on LP back when it was thriving. And no, it is rarely the obvious ones. They are a bit more subtle, having learned how to blend in.

It's weird, really. There are even professional social-media types, not necessarily Disney plants, posting here on Magic currently. To what end I'm unsure. Hoping to get a contract? Doing an experiment on their own? Who knows? Bottom line is that people are not often who they claim to be on the 'net. Even around here.

'74 is the expert. (Yes, wannab, he does know...). I'll point him over here to contribute.

Sites like this are not watched at all because 99% of the content is garbage, at least to those who matter in a large company. More highly regarded sites with actual, credible user information can be used such as Facebook and Twitter. CM online activity can also be monitored to make sure they don't say anything stupid or give away trade secrets.
Someone here liked to brag about how Phil read his posts but that hasn't happened.

Well if they are smart they at least give it a curious glance. It only makes sense to know what the fanatics are thinking and saying. Most people on these boards have been to WDW more than once, some go to WDW multiple times a year. Your core fans are your bread and butter. It only makes sense to know how they are reacting to changes.

Hmmm. Maybe you might want to stick to commenting on other divisions of the company about which you may know more?
Granted, Disney's social media operations are not my specialty.
However, based on conversations I have had and information that has been passed to me, I feel confident that my above post is accurate.
If you are involved in Disney's social media department, feel free to elaborate on your first hand knowledge.

And it annoys me that Twitter is considered a "highly regarded" site with more credible information than this one.

Eddie Sotto once stated on his thread that Disney does indeed monitor websites such as this. I tend to trust the guy's word.
Yes.
This site, Miceage, Laughing Place, DIS, and a few others.
And yes, they monitor Twitter and Facebook, too.

I don't have first hand knowledge either so we're in the same category.
I may be wrong since I do not use Twitter but does it not require one to register with their full name and other basic personal information? I think that alone makes things slightly more official and credible than things posted on this site where I can use an name that I want without fear of anyone tracking me, other than the site administrator.
